Description

UNITED STATES PATENT '@EEICE.
CHARLES A. WAKEFIELD, OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part or Letters Patent No. 1140,099, dated June 17, 1873 application file March 24, 1873. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. WAKE- FIELD, of Pittseld, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Earth-Closets, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in an earth-closet having a large or main and childs seat, and inwhich the main seat and earth-receptacle of the closet are arranged side by side 5 and the childs seat, which may be hinged, is made capable of being adjusted into position either over the main seat or earth-receptacle, as required. The invention also consists in the combination of a shutter or lid with the hinged childs seat and earthreceptacle and main seat, arranged as described. An earth closet thus constructed and provided may be got up cheap, and posesdses many advantages, as hereinafter speci- In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, Figure l represents a plan of an earth-closet constructed in accord-ance with my invention and with the childs seat in position over the earth-receptacle; Fig. 2, a similar view, but showing the childs seat as arranged over the main seat, and closed by a lid or shutter, which latter is also represented by dotted lines as moved out of the way to expose the holes in the main and childs seat. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the closet.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several ligures.
A is a main box constituting the walls or shell of the closet divided transversely by a vertical partition, b, and which may be tted with a main or genera-l lid, B. O is the main seat arranged over the one chamber formed by the partition b, and which may be made removable or otherwise to open when required, to allow of the insertion and removal of a deposit-pail or receiving-vessel, G. D is the earth-receptacle formed by the chamber on the other side of the partition b, and thus being arranged side by side with the main seat. E is the childs seat hinged at c c to admit of its being swung into position over the main seat C or over the earth-receptacle D, as required, and being provided With a lid or shutter, F, which is preferably pivoted to it at d, or may be otherwise applied to admit of removal or being opened when needed.
In the use ot' the closet, supposing the main seat G to have been in demand, and excrement to have been deposited in the pail G, then the person, as 11e or she rises from the seat, first swings or throws over the childs seat E from its position over the earth-receptacle D, in Fig. 1, to its position over the main seat C in Fig. 2, and with the lid or shutter F closed. This prevents escape of eftluvia while the occupant of the closet adjusts his or her person, and makes the necessary preparations to sprinkle the earth, ashes, or other deodorizing material over the deposit in the pail G, and which is done by shoveling a sufficient quantity of such material by a hand-scoop or other portable device from or out of the receptacle D, and, on removing or swinging the lid F to one side, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, distributing said charge of earth or deodorizing material over the deposit, after which the shutter F is again closed, and in due course the childs seat swung back to its normal position over the earth-receptacle D, when the main lid B may be closed, if desired.
Then it is required to use the childs seat E, it is adjusted into position over the main seat G and the lid F thrown open, but afterward closed, and the deodorizing material applied as before, and said seat returned to its normal position over the earth-receptacle. In all cases the main seat C will be protected from .being soiled either by use of the childls seat or from dust or earth settling on it through carelessness or otherwise when distributing the earth over the deposit, and any dust or earth settling on the childs seat be returned to the receptacle D when adjusting said seat to its position over the latter.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, ism- 1. The combination, with the main seat C earth receptacle D and main seat C, arand earth-receptacleDarranged side by side, ranged side by side, essentially as deof the hinged childs seat E, made capable of scribed.
swinging into position over the main seat or GHAS. A. WAKEFIELD. earth-receptacle, as required, substantially as specified. Witnesses:
2. The combination of a shutter or lid, F, FRED. HAYNES,
with the hinged childs seat E, and the D. MISELL.
