Description
Patented Dec. 20, 1921.
L/FS m 6 OIL-CAP FOR VEHICLE-WHEELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 261, 19211.
Application filed September 5, 1917. Serial No. 189,865.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, ll STAT. L, 1313.)
T0 all-whom it may concem:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW JOSEPH flange inclining inward at the apex of this cone in which i shall he an opening which shall have fitted into it a sliding valve which shall be a smaller cone. hollow internally.
without an opening at the apex and which shall he kept in position by a spiral coil or spring fitting into the hollow of this Smaller cone and which coil or spring shall be itself kept in position by a piece of metal in the form of a cross the ends of which shall fit into four grooves. one opposite the other in the inner side of the outer cone. This crosspiece shall also have ashort pivot in the center which pivot shall fit into the lower end of the spiral coil, and this crosspiece shall be detachable.
As shown in the accompanying drawing,
said oil-cap consists of an outer cone 1 with an opening at the apex :2. as shown into which fits the inner cone 3 which latter is held in place and operated by the spiral coil or spring at which latter is in turn held in place by the cross-piece 5 fitting into grooves at 6 in lugs in the inner side of the outer cone 1, as shown. The pivot 7 fits into the center of the spiral coil or spring 4, as shown, thus securing said spring in position.
This cap can be oiled by means of an oil can introduced into the opening at the apex and by pressing on the inner cone which retracts and allows the oil to flow into the base of the cap, the conical shape of which accelerates this without removing the cap or changing the position of the wheel so that in this case time and oil are saved, for in the prior art when the cap is removed from the wheel and oil poured into the former, a certain amount of this oil is lost in the operation of replacing the cap.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In an oil cap having a conical casing with an internal flange at the apex thereof, a valve comprising a conical body member having a recess in the base thereof, a cross piece secured in position in the conical casing. and a spring extending bet-ween the cross piece and the conical valve, with one end thereof entering the recess in the base of the conical valve to normally maintain the same in position against the valve seat formed at the extremity of the internal flange at the apex of the said conical casing.
2. In an oil cap having a conical casing with an internal flange at the apex thereof and spaced internal lugs on the walls thereof, a valve comprising a conical body-member having a recess in the base thereof, a cross member seated on the internal lugs of the walls of the casing. a pin secured in the cross piece, and a spring extending between the said cross piece and the said valve memher. one end of the spring surrounding the said pin and the other pin entering the said recess in the base of the valve member to center the said spring and normally maintain the valve member in position against the valve seat formed at the extremity of the said internal flange at the apex of the casing.
Signed by me this 15th day of June, 1917.
ANDREW JOSEPH CROTTY.
