Be it known that l, Anrrron D. llnnnrrr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Cooke and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to socket wrench handles and more particularly to that class of tools adapted to receive various size, removable sockets for engagement with different size nuts whereby the same may be tightened or removed from a part.
The primary object of the invention is the construction of a socket receiving implement or tool whereby provision is had to turn the socket either to the left or right in tightening or removing threaded nuts or other fastening element without removing the implement from the part being turned.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a socket receiving implement foraccommodating various size socket heads whereby the same may be actuated to loosen or tighten nuts, caps or other fastening elements, including spring controlled dogs whereby theimplement may be operated either to the left or right with out removing the same or the socket head from the part being turned.
Another and very important object of the invention will be found to reside in the provision of a socket receiving implement which will be extremely simple in construction, positive in operation, consisting of comparatively few parts and therefore inexpensive to manufacture, rigid and durable in use, highly efficient in performing its functions and of universal application for various uses in the different trades.
With these objects in view and others which will be manifest and suggested as the nature and purpose of my invention are revealed in the following specification and drawing wherein I have shown a practical, yet preferred embodiment thereof.

the wrench stock or handle which may be fiat or of any desirable shape, and terminates in a forward, enlarged head 6 which is preferably rounded at 7 to conform with the shape of a ratchet mechanism subsequently to be described. The enlarged head 6 1s provided with an aperture near its outerend designated by numeral 8 and is adapted to receive the rounded portion 9 which constitutes a pivot or bearing surface of a polygonal shape element 10 carried thereby for the reception of the removable sockets which are adapted to be engaged therewith for turning the fastening elenient above referred to.
Formed integral with or separable from the pivot member, I have provided a ratchet 11 formed with ratchet teeth 12 thereon, said ratchet lying at the outer or end'of the head 6 and of course conforms to the rounded shape thereof. Another ratchet member 13 having ratchet teeth 14: thereon is also retained and operable with. the pivot member 10 and lies flush and contiguous with the bottom of said enlarged head, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Any suitable form of fastening means such as a setscrew 15 may be provided for securing the said lower ratchet member on the central pivot member.
The head 6 also carries a pair of double toothed, pawls 15, 16 each of which is pro vided with extended teeth 17, 18 for en gagement with the respective teeth of the ratchet members above referred to. The said pawls 15, 16 are pivotally retained on a transverse pin 19 extending through the head 6 and as shown have fastening pins 21 whereby the respective pawls are retained and both operable upon rotation of the transverse pin 19. Of course, both of the pawls are adapted to be operated at the same time so that the respective teeth 17, 18 may engage the ratchet members when it is desired to operate the wrench either to the left or right. A transverse stud 20 having a shoulder 21 and a knurled head 22 is positioned in proximity to the head 16 and is provided with a groove or recess 23 for the reception of a resilient spring member 24L adapted to overlie the same, one end of the spring being secured in a recess 25 of one of the pawls and the opposite end of the said spring being made fast and secure in a recess 26 in the stock or handle of the wrench. The resiliency of the spring is such as to permit the same to be removed from the groove 23 and is of course adapted to be thrown to the otherside of the stud and upon such movement will cause the tooth 1'? or the tooth 18 as the case may be, to engage the teeth of the ratchet mechanism above referred to. In other words the movement of the spring-24k either to the right or left of the stud will oscillate the transverse pivot 19 carrying the respective pawls so that they will-engage with the ratchet members 11 and 13 whereby the stock carried by the member 10, may be operated either to the left or right as desired. It so desired, the member 10 may be constructed with a polygonal, or similar shaped internal socket so that it may also engage a cap or screw threaded element to tighten or remove the same in the same manner as the removable stocks above referred to.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated my invention embodied in one form by way of example, and which in practice has been found to be highly satisfactory in obtaining the desired results. It will be obvious however that other embodiments maybe adopted and that various changes in thedetails of construction may be resorted to'by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is furthermore understood that the invention is not necessarily limited or restricted to the precise elements shown except in so far as such limitations are specilied in the subject matter being claimed.
Having shown and described my inventionwhat I now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a wrench, the combination with a handle having an enlarged head, a nut receivingelement rotatably carried by said head, a ratchet member integral with said rotatable element, a separable ratchet mem- 91 carried by and rotatable with said first mentioned ratchet member, double toothed pawls pivotally secured in said head for simultaneous engagement with the ratchet members, and spring controlled means socured to one side of the handle and to one of said pawls for simultaneously oscillating the same for engagement with the ratchet members whereby the rotating element may be operated to the left or right.
2. In a wrench, the con'ibination with a handle having an enlarged head, a nut receiving element rotatably carried by said head, a ratchet member rotatable with said nut receiving element, a separable ratchet member also carried by said rotating element and operable therewith, a pair of similar. double toothed pawls pivotally secured on each side of said head and engageable simultaneously with the ratchet members. a stud removably secured in proximity to one of said pawls, a spring fastened to said handle and retained by one of said pawls loosely overlying said stud whereby said pawls may be oscillated by the movement of said spring and permit the ratchet teeth and rotating element to operateeither to the left or right.
