AM PHorrwrHosMPH/c co, mmosaomvf's Pmi; 1 sa UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE REUBEN SHALER, OE MADISON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY L. SHALER, OF- SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXERCISING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139.924, dated June 17, 1873; application filed April 4, 1873.
Z'o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN SHALER, of Madison, county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to an improved railway swing for children and invalids; and it consists in a number of iianged rollers, secured together in a suitable frame for movin g back and forth in the guide-frame, and upon which the carriage or movableseat is placed. By a slight pull upon the sidecords, the person in the carriage can cause it to roll rapidly and easily from one end to the other of the guide-frame.
Figure lis a side elevation of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
a represents the guide-frame, consisting of two pieces of timber, having their top edges Vcurving upward toward the ends, and having a stanchion fixed at each corner, connected together by the ropes or chains c. To the frame e are secured a number of rollers, g, having a iiange, z', near each end, which not only prevent lateral ymovement inthe rollerframe, but in the carriage l. The bearingsurface of each roller, where it bears against the top of the guide-frame, and where the runners of the carriage pass over them, are covered with rubber or its equivalent substance, so as to protect the parts from wear and tear.
The carriage may be of any desired construction, and placed upon two runners, which straddle over the flanges so as to keep it always in position and prevent any lateral motion. Or in place of this swing any suitable device may be attached to the frame e.
The person sitting in the carriage takes hold of the ropes on the side, and by a slight pull can move the carriage from end to end oi the guide-frame, the stanchions serving as a stop to prevent it from moving too far in .either direction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. In combination with the guide-frame a, the frame e having rollers g provided with flanges i, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the roller-frame c, the carriage Z, constructed and arranged to move freely back and forth upon the said frame, substantially as set forth.
3. The rollers g, guide-frame a, stanehions, cords, and carriage l, when these diiferent parts are combined and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I hereunto affix my signature.
REUBEN BEAMER.
