JOHN BERGGREN, E IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO.
WRENCH.
Application filed April 26, 1921.
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BERGGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Idaho Falls, in the county of Booneville and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to improvements in wrenches.
My object is to produce an extremely simple construction of wrenches wherein a handie member is pivotally connected to the shank of the movable jaw and is also co nected through the medium of a link with the movable aw, whereby, when the handle is swung in one direction the movable jaw will advance on the shank of the stationary jaw toward the last mentioned jaw to effectively grip an article therebetween and when the handle is swung in an opposite direction the movable jaw will be brought away from the stationary jaw so that a fresh grip can be obtained on the article or the wrench released from engagement with the article.
I accomplish the foregoing objects by a construction, combination and operative a. sociation of parts, such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the stationary jaw which is provided, at one of itsends with a centrally arranged laterally extending shank 2. The inner race of the jaw, at the portion thereof providedwith the shank is arranged at an angle, as indicated by the numeral The shank 2 is provided with a longitudinal elongated slot at.
Arranged for movement on the shank 2 is v the movable aw 5. The jaw 5 has one of its ends enlarged and bifurcated to straddle the shank 2. The inner face of the jaw 2, at the portion thereof disposed above the shank is cut at an angle, as indicated by the numeral 6, corresponding to the angle portions 2 of the jaw 1, and these angle surfaces meet when the jaw 5 is moved to its extreme position against the jaw 1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 1221.
Serial no. 464,733.
To the upper end of the shank 4: there is pivoted, as at 7, the bifurcated end of the op erating lever 8. Between the arms at the bifurcated end of the said lever 8 there is also pivoted, as at 9 a link 10. This link is re ceived inthe slot i of the shank 2 and is disposed in the slot provided at the bifurcated end of the jaw 5, and is pivoted thereto by an element 11. The lever 10 has elongated slots through which the pivot pins 9 and 11 pass so that no binding will take place when the parts are operated.
A pivot 12 also passes through the bifurcated end of the jaw 5 and through the slot 4 of the shank 2. This pivot 12 has arranged thereonan anti-frictional roller 13 that contacts with the opposite longitudinal walls provided by the slot 4:, and steadies the jaw 5 in its movement on the shank 2.
It is believed that the construction and operation will be apparent. Manifestly, an outward swinging of the handle 8 on its pivot 7 with respect to the shank 2 will cause the lever 10 to move the jaw 5 in the direction of the jaw l. A tilting movement of the jaw 5 is prevented by the roller 13 on the pivot 12. This roller also prevents any undue binding between the jaw 5 and the shank 2, in the movement of the former on the latter. When the handle 8 is swung in an opposite direction, that is toward the jaw 1, the jaw 5 will be moved longitudinally on the shank 2 away from. the jaw 1 so as to release an object engaged between the jaws and to permit of a fresh grip being obtained on the object or to permit of the removal of the wrench from the object.
Having described the invention, I claim In a wrench, a stationary jaw having a longitudinally slotted shank, a movable jaw having a bifurcated end which receives the shank, an anti-frictional roller carried by the movable jaw and disposed in the slot and contacting with the opposed longitudinal walls thereof, lever having a bifurcated end straddling and pivoted to the shank adjacent to the outer end thereof, a link received in the slot of the shank and loosely pivoted in the bifurcated portion of the movable jaw and to the bifurcated end of the lever.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN BriaeenEN.
