Description

I H. G. GRAF.
SHIPPING CONTAINER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 30,1915.
1 ,398,686. Patented Nov. 29, T1921,
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE. 1
HENRY G. GRAF, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y., A. CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SHIPPING-CONTAINER.
To allwlzom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, HENRY G.GRAF, 8. citizen of the United States, residing in Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement in'Shipping-Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to shipping containers and has more particular reference to shipping containers of rela tively large capacity where it is desirable to firmly look a cover in place in such manner that it may be removed without requiring a cutting or tearing of the material of the body or cover.
Containers of this character have a par- .ticularuse in the packaging of food products in bulk and it is particularly desirable that the package may be made ready for shipment after being filled without requir-- ing the action of any machine or complicated implements and without requiring an appreciableamount of hand tooling.
This invention has for anobject the provision of a package or container of the character described which may be readily closed for shipment after being filled and which may be manufactured at relatively little cost.
After being shipped these goods are receivedbythe retailer and the contents sold oif in smaller lots. It is desirable'that the opening of such a package shall not prevent subsequent temporary closing to eX- elude dust and other contaminating matter. It is also desirable that the opening of such a container be possible withoutthe provision of special tools or machines.
This invention has for a further objectthe provision of a container of the character described which may be opened by such ordinary implements as are found around the average grocery store, and this without cutting or deforming the cover or the body of the package. v I
Other objects and advantages of the, invention will be apparent as it is better understood. from the following descriptlon when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container embodying my invention;
Specification of Letters Patent. Patei ted N6 29 1921 Application filed September 30, 1915. Serial No. 58,260. v
Fig. 2 is a partial enlarged section through the same; and 1 Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail new.
For the partial side purpose of illustratingmy invention I have shown on the drawing a con tainer of large capacity and comprising a body A and a cover B. The body A in the present 1nstance consists of a large almost clylindrlcal side wall 4 of heavy metallic s eeting of appropriate character. To the lower end of this 'is seamed, in the usual manner, the bottom 5 of similar material.
At the upper end the edge 6 of the body I is bent around an encircling wire or rod? to form an outwardly extending rounded edge at the open end. I
The cover B also preferably consists of a heavymetalli'c sheet corrugated centrally at Sand having a raised part 9 in which may seat the rounded edge of the open end of the body'. Beyond the raised part 9 a depending flange 10, terminating in a false wlre edge 11 vis provided. This arrangement provides a slip cover which may be closed down over the open end of the body, as
will be seen from viewing the drawing.
The flange 10 is cut at intervals at 12 to provide a plurality of tongues or lips 13 which may be bent, as shown, under and up around the rounded edge of the body to lock the cover in place. The rounded edge of the body formed by incasing the wire 7 special .machinesl After being delivered 1 to the retailer or other' persons desiring to open the package the tongues 13 maybe bent outwardly with any screw driver or other implement adapted to be inserted at one side of the tongue and pushed across behind it to pry it out into nearly' its original position. The cost of sucha construction is practicall .no more than the cost would be'=were t e lips 13 not set off as described.
its
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will beunderstood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope 'of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim: I
A shipping ves'selcomprising a body having an outwardly extending peripheral head;
a cover for said bodyhaving a downwardly extending peripheral flange fitting around said bead of the body, said flange extending below said bead and being spaced away from the wall of the body, said flange being formed with a plurality of tongues cut out from said flange along their side and bot- Signed in the presence of two subscribing witnesses 4 c HENRY G. GRAF.
