APPLICATION ElLED JAN-18,1921- gOSEPH BARTA, 0F MARTINS FERRY, OHIO.
LAMP-HOLDER JEOR MINERS CAPS.
Application filed January 18, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BARTA, a citizen of the United States, residing in Martins Ferry, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Holders for Miners Caps, of which the following is a specifi -ation.
This invention relates to devices of the kind employed for supporting lamps on miners caps in order that the hands of the miner may be free to work, the lamps be ing so held as to afiord the necessary illumination.
I-leretofore such devices have not, so far as my knowledge extends, been so made as to hold the lamp with such security as to keep it from swinging laterally and back and forth when mounted on the cap, and the object of this invention is to so construct the holder that these objections may be overcome.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a Z-shaped frame of such form that it may be readily secured to the cap and on the upper part of this frame I secure a metal plate provided with a tubular downwardly extending socket to receive the suspending hook of the lamp and which joins a Hanged. grooved portion which receives the hook and prevents it from swinging, the arrangement being such that while the lamp may be readily applied to, or taken from, the cap it is prevented from swinging or wabbling either laterally or back and forth when in use.
In the, accompanying drawlngsz- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a miners ca with my improvements applied.
ig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the, cap and the lamp-holder and shows how the lamp is held on the cap.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device adapted to be applied to the lamp-holding frame to prevent the lamp from turning or swinging in any direction.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of this device, and
Fig. 5 is a front elevation thereof.
The drawings show a miners cap A of well known construction to which is secured in the usual way a Z-shaped frame B. It may be riveted at Z) to the top of the cap and at b to the vizor. The frame is so made as to stand out from the front of the Specification of Letters Patent.

cap, as shown in Fig. 2, and it is slotted at 6 as usual. As thus far described the device is of usual or well known construction.
Experience has demonstrated that in the use of this kind of holder the lamp will swing in various directions which is objectionable for many reasons. In order to prevent this, I attach to the top of the frame a metal. plate C formed with a downwardly extending tubular socket o, the upper end of which is beveled at 0" and joins a groove (1, extending from the top of the socket toward the front of the plate and bounded on each side and at the rear by a flange 0 The groove extends from the top of the socket nearly to the front of the plate where it joins a. slotted part registering with the slot b of the frame.
The lamp 1) is provided with a hook (I as usual and when suspended it is held in the manner shown in Fig. 2.
It will be observed that the straight end 11 of the hook enters the socket 0 while the top or horizontal part of the hook lies in the groove 0 between the flanges a. When thus mounted the lamp is so held that it cannot swing fore and aft and cannot turn from side to side. The socket prevents the fore and aft movement but a pivotal movement in the socket would not be prevented were it not for the flanges shown on opposite sides of the groove.
I claim as my invention:
A device for supporting a miners lamp upon a cap comprising the usual frame slotted at its upper end, and a plate rigidly attached thereto and formed with a tubu lar downwardly extending socket passing through one end of the slot in the frame and closely engaging the vertical part of the hook of the lamp, said plate having on its upper face a groove extending forwardly from the \upper part of the socket and raised flanges at the sides of said groove spaced to engage closely the side of the hook, whereby lateral and swinging move ment of the lamp is prevented, the upper face of said plate at the sides and rear of the groove being beveled to guide the lamp hook while being inserted.
in testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOSEPH BARTA.
