To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that L Flinn Sneasrmn SoHAnrnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at South St. Paul, in the county of Dakota and State of Minnesota, h vs invented certain new and useful improvements in Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hoisting apparatus, and more particularly to the type of hoisting apparatus used in a slaughter house for hoisting the carcasses to what is known as a heading rail.
Heretofore, this type of hoisting apparatus has depended entirely upon the judgment of the operator in properly placing the carcass with relation to the heading rail. If the operator does not stop the hoist in the correct position, the carcass may not be securely fastened tothe heading rail and fall therefrom, striking the operator below. This fallacy of the present hoisting devices has at times resulted in serious injuries to operatives. In order to eliminate the ele ment of judgment, I have supplied a hoisting apparatus by means of which the article hoisted is stopped at a predetermined point independently of any action upon the part of the operator. This feature forms an im port-ant object of my invention.
A further object is to form. a device of this character, cheap of manufacture and simple of construction, and the parts of which maybe readily interchanged.
Further objects will appear during the course of the following discussion.
In the accompanying drawingswherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown preferred embodiment of my invention and throughout which like numerals designate similar parts Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing the relation of the several parts of my invention.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, numeral 10 indicates a suitable support arranged above floor of the slughter house. l /lounted upon thi support is a suitable friction driving member 11. The driving member 11 engages friction drums 12 and 13, these drums being provided with winding reels 1% and 18 respectively. Secured to the winding reel 13 of the friction drum 13 is a chain 15. Attached to the winding reel is a brake arm 16, counter weighted as at 17.
Secured to a suitable support 18 is a sheave 19. in the present instance the means of securing this sheave is shown as comprising shaped element 20, secured to the sheave l9 and extending through the eye of an eye bolt 21 mounted upon the support'ld. v through the U shaped member 20 i 'Ily secured as at 22 to the frame of the sheave is a U shaped supporting member 22. The arms of the if shaped member 2:2 are provided with a series of corresponding openings 22 h l'ountcd upon a bolt extend ing through a pair of these openings is an arm 23.
This arm when in nor ial position abuts a support 2a, bolted or otherwise, secured to one of the arms of the ll shaped member 22. The free endof the arm 23 has attached thereto by means of an eye bolt 25, a skeleton arm 26. This skeleton arm provides a central opening E26 rectangular in form, for a purpose hereinafter toappear.
Secured in the eye of the bolt 25 is a cable 28. This cable passes about a small pulley 27, secured to the lower end of one of the arms of the ll shaped member 22,then around a pulley 29 fixed at any desired point and is secured to the free end of the brake arm lbby means of an eye or the like 30. Secured to the end of the brake arm 16 is a second eye 31, to which is secured a cable 32. This cable is secured to a floating onlley Arranged above the floating pu ley 33 is a fixed pulley 34ito which is secured a cable 35. This cable 35 passes about the pulley 3 3 and back around the pulley 34:, thence around a second fixed pulley 36, and extends downwardly and terminates in a handle 87. As will be clearly seen, the chain 15 passes about the sheave 19 and extends downwardly, through the opening 26 of the skeleton arm 26, and terminates in a hook 38. Arranged immediately above the hook, is a weight 39, this weight being of such size that it will not pass through the opening 26 of the skeleton arm 26.
The operation of this form of my device is as follows:
The operator starts the hoist by pulling down upon a handle 37, releasing the brake arm 16. The hoist travels upwardly until the weight 39 engages with the skeleton arm 26, raisin the arm 26 to the position shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 2. As will be clearly seen by referring tothis figure, as the arm 26 is raised, the cable 28 is moved, drawing down the brake arm 16 and stopping the hoisting apparatus.
In the form shown in the Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the principle of operation is identical with that shown in Figs. 2 and 3, but the mechanism by which this is accomplished differentiates slightly from that shown in these figures.
In this form I have shown an arm 40 pivoted to an eye beam or other suitable sup port 41. The lower flange 41 of the eye beam forms a stop or support for the arm. This arm is angular in form and is supplied with a brace 40. Secured to the arm 40 is an eye bolt 4-2, in the eye of which is secured a cable as. This cable passes about a fixed pulley 4. 1 and is secured as at 4:5 to the brake arm 46 of the friction drum 12. The cable 47 is also secured to the other end of the brake and to this cable 47 is secured in turn a floating pulley 48. Mounted above the floating pulley 48 is a fixed pulley 4-9 to which is secured a cable 50. This cable 50 passes about the floating pulley 48, pulleys 49, 51 and 52 and is supplied with a handle 50 upon its lower end.
Secured to a gate 53, mounted in suitable guides, is a sheave 53-. A cable 54: is fixed at a suitable point above the sheave 53*, passes about the sheave 53*, about fixed pulleys 55 and 56 and is secured to the winding drum of the friction drum 12.
referring to Figs. 4: and 5 it will be clearly seen that as the gate 53 and sheave 53 are hoisted by the drum, the sheave contacts the free end of the arm 40 and operates the brake arm 46.
To those familiar with the art, it will be obvious that many changes can be made in the construction herein shown and described, without in any sense departing from the spirit of the invention, and I accordingly do not limit myself to this construction but may resort to any change in the size, shape and arrangement of parts, without in any manner departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the type described, a driven element, a winding reel operated thereby, a brake arm adapted to stop the movement of the winding reel, a sheave, a flexible element secured to said winding reel and passing about said sheave, a support secured to the frame of said sheave, an arm pivotally secured to said support to swing vertically, a stop secured to said support adapted to limit the downward movement of said arm, a skeleton arm having a central opening, an eye-bolt securing said skeleton arm to said pivoted arm, a cable having one end secured to said eye-bolt and the other end secured to the free end of said brake arm, said flexible element extending through the opening in said skeletonarm and being provided there below with an enlargement of greater size than said opening.
2. In a device of the type described, a winding reel, a flexible element secured to said winding reel, a brake arm adapted when shifted in one direction to check the motion of said winding reel, a member associated with said brake arm tending to move the same in the direction tending to check said reel, manually operated means for OVGI'COmiIIg the action of said member and releasing the reel for movement, and means connected with said brake arm and actuated by said flexible element when the same has traveled a predetermined distance for acting in" conjunction with said member to overcome the action of the manually controlled means and shift said brake arm in the di rection to check the motion of said winding reel.
3. In a device of the type described, a winding reel, a flexible element secured to said winding reel, a brake arm adapted When shifted downwardly to check the motion of said winding reel, a counter weight asso'-,
ciated with said brake arm and tending to move the same downwardly, a suitably supported cable connected with said arm and adapted to be shifted to elevate said arm against the action of said counter weight and a second cable connected with said brake arm and actuated by said flexible element when the same has traveled a predetermined distance for acting in conjunction with said counter weight to overcome the action of said cable in lifting said brake arm.
4. In a device of the type described,a winding reel, a sheave frame, a sheave mounted in said frame, a flexible element secured to said winding reel and passing about said sheave, a brake arm adapted to coact with said reel, :1. support secured to said sheave frame, a pivoted arm connected with said support and adapted to actuate said brake arm, means carried by said flexible element for contacting and moving said pivoted arm, and means for simultaneously releasing said brake arm and returning said pivoted arm to the normal position.
5. In a device of the type described, a Winding reel, a sheave frame, a sheave mounted in said frame, a flexible element secured to said Winding reel and passing about said sheave, a brake arm adapted to coact With said reel, a support secured to said sheave frame, a pivoted arm connected with said support and adapted to actuate said brake arm and means carried by said flexible element for contacting and moving said pivoted arm.
