WINDOW VENTILATING-STOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BASIL W. DnNlyrs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, haveinven ted certain new and useful Improvements 1n VVindow Ventilating-Stops, of which the following is a-specification, reference be ng had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to means for limiting the upward movement of a lower W1Ildow sash or the downward movement of an upper window sash, or both, said means serving as a stop to prevent a wlndow sash from being openedor shifted more than a prescribed or predetermined distance, so that a window cannot be surreptitiously entered.
My invention aims to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive stop device in the form of pieces of hardware that may be easily and quickly applied to the upper sash of a window frame or to one of two reciprocable members movable in proximity to each other. The stop device" includes a rail that may take various forms and slidable on the rail is a stop which in an active position is in the path of a sash or member to limit its movement, and when the stop is in an inactive or off position, the sashes or members may be freely adjusted.
The construction entering into my invention will be hereinafter considered and then claimed and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of the inner side of an upper window sash provided with the preferred form of stop devlce;

The lugs 2 and 3 maintain the flat bar in spaced relation to the side rail 5 and by cutting and depressing the bar to form the lugs 3 a series of shoulders or stop ledges 7 are formed, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.

The lower end of the fiat bar 1 is formed of an integral switch rail 8 and this rail is in a horizontal plane relative to the flat bar or main rail 1, and is curved rearwardly from the vertical plane of said bar, said switch rail overlying the meeting rail 9 of the sash 6 and extending near the pane of glass 10 in the sash, so that the pane of glass will serve as. an abutment or stop.
Slidable on the fiat bar or main rail 1 and capable of being shiftedon to the switch rail 8 is an adjustable stop comprising a body 11 having a recess 12 and opposed grooves 13 in wallsof the recess 12, so that the body 11 may be slidably mounted on the main rail by first placing it on the end of the switch rail 8 prior'to attaching the flat bar or main rail to the side rail 5. With the body 11 slidable on the main rail the recess 12 is at the front side of said main rail and in said recess is placed a plunger 14: having a knurled or roughened stem 15 protruding from the outer face of the body 11 so that it may be easily gripped by the fingers and shifted to retracted position, the plunger being held otherwise extended by a coiled spring 16 in the recess 12 about the stem 15.
The diameter of the plunger 14 is slightly less than the width of the openingsproduced in the main rail l'by the depressed lugs 3 and consequently the plunger 14 can enter the lug openings and engage the shoulders 7. Without manipulating the stem 15 the stop can be shifted downwardly on the main rail since the plunger 14 will ride out of the lug openings on the inclined portions 17 of the lugs and then onto the outer face of the main rail. It is therefore possible to shift the stop from any of the lug openings downwardly to the switch rail 8 and when the stop is on the switch rail, within the plane of the upper see 6 it does not inter fere with the raising and lowering of a lower sash 18. a
When the stop is against one of the shoulders 7 the lower sash 18 can only be raised as far as said stop, since the main rail supports the stop in the same vertical plane as the lower sash and the meeting rail of the lower sash will impinge against the stop and thus prevent the lower sash from being further opened. It is obvious that with the lower sash closed the upper sash 6 can only be lowered until the stop, held against one of the shoulders 7, impinges against the meeting rail of the lower sash. In other words, the sashes have a limited movement relative to each other and the movement is defined by the distance between the stop and the meeting rail of the lower sash.
A modification of my invention has been illustrated in Figs. 4 and 7 wherein the main rail 1 supports a long vertically disposed switch rail 19 in parallelism therewith but set in a plane in the rear of the main rail. The long switch rail 19 has its ends integral with the ends of the main rail and the two rails cooperate in forming an endless oblong loop rail for a stop 20, which when on the main rail 1 will limit the movement of upper and lower sashes and when on the switch rail 19 will permit of either of the sashes being adjusted. The stop 20 is somewhat similar to the preferred form of stop, with the exception that the protruding stem 15 is dispensed with and sim ply a short stem or stud 21-used within the recess 12 as a guide for the spring 16 therein. This form of stop means that the stop cannot be pushed upwardly on the main rail 1 but must be always shifted downwardly on to the switch rail 19 when it is desired to reach the upper end of the .main' rail 1. In the preferred form of construction it is possible to manually retract the plunger 14 to clear the shoulders 7 and thus permit of the stop being shifted to a desired elevation on the main rail. 7
A further development of this modified form is shown in Figs. 5 and 6 wherein the switch rail 19 has its upper and lower ends hinged, as at 22, to the upper and lower ends of the main rail 1 and by reference to Fig. 6
it will be noted that the hinges are comparatively narrow so that the stop 20may pass by said hinges as well as the lugs of the main rail. This hinged switch rail can be swung forwardly to facilitate shifting the stop 20 thereon, and the same feature may be embodied in,the preferred form of construction by providing the switch rail 8 I with a hinge connection 23 at the lower end of the main rail 1, also with an abutment 24 to prevent the stop from being shifted off of the switch rail.
The pieces of hardwarecan be finished to present a neat and attractive appearance and while permitting of window sashes being adjusted for ventilating purposes the device also will contribute to the prevention of burglarizing. I
WVhile in the drawings there are 'illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claimis 1. A device of the type described comprising a rail having an angular portion supported in a plane other than that of said rail, spaciid stop shoulders on said rail, and a stop slidable on said rail and the angular portion thereof and adapted to have a latch engagement with the shoulders whenmoved in one direction and ride free of the shoulders when moved in the-opposite direction.
2. A- device of the type described comprising .a main rail, having pressed out lugs adapted'to be connected to a window sash, the pressed out lugs having shoulders at said mainrail, a switch rail carried'by said main rail andextending into a plane other than that of said main rail, and a stop slidable on said rails and adapted to have'its movement limited on saidmain rail by engagement with any of the shoulders thereof.
3. A device as characterized in claim 2, wherein a plunger is located in said stop and is adapted to engage any of the shoulders of said main rail.
