ATTO RNEY WITNESSES.'
EMMA F. BARRE, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
STOCKING-SUPPORTER.
To dlwhomz't may concern Be it known that I, EMMA F. BARRI, a ycitizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stocking-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention 1s the provision of a stocking supporter that 1 s a practical improvement over the stocking -supporter constituting the subject of my VPatent #1,324,720 of December 9, 1919.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the
invention consists in v.the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed. ln the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof Figure 1 is a Vside elevation of my 1mproved supporter.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective ofthe upper member of the base comprised in the supporter.
F ig. l is a perspective of the lower member of said base.
Fig. 5 is a perspective of the bail as it appears precedent to the bending of its terminals inthe manner shown in Fig. 1. Similar numeralsV of reference designate corresponding` parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among otherelements my improved supporter includes a flexible suspending element in the form of a. strip 1, preferably of webbing. The said strip 1 is looped as indicated by 2, and is adjustable as to length through the medium of a buckle 3 in theV ordinary well known manner.
Inaddition to the strip 1 the improved 4supporter comprises a metallic base, and a metallic bail, the latter being designated by 4l. The metallic base is made up of an upperv member 5 and a lower member 6. Said upper member 5 is characterized by an opening` 7 to receive the loop bight of the strip 1, Figs.`1 and 2,`and is also characterized by a lower opening S and by barrels 9 and a pendent tongue 10, the latter apertured at 11 and arranged between the bar. rels 9 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. By particular reference to Fig. l it will be understood that the lower base member 6 is provided with a lower opening 12 and with an upper tongue 13, the latter being designed to be passed through the opening 11 in the member 5 and to be bent into the Specification of Letters Patent.

form indicated by 14 in Fig. 2 so as to hingedly connect the member' 6 to the memer 5, for an important purpose hereinafter set forth. The bail t is preferably shaped as shown in Fig. 5 and is hingedly connected to the base member 5 by the disposition of the trunnion portions 15 of the bail in the barrels 9, and is secured in said relation by the bending of the inner terminals of the trunnions 15, as indicated by 16 in Figs. 1 and2. The supporter also incluses a flexible element 17, preferably in the form of a tape of appropriate textile material. The said flexible element 17 is looped as shown in Fig. 2 and has the bight of its said loop arranged in the upper openinO' 7 of the upper baiseV member 5. It will also be observed by reference to Fig. 2 that both stretches or thicknesses of the flexible element 7 are arranged back of the base members 5'and G and the hinge connection Ybetween the two, and that the forward stretch or thickness of the said flexible element is extended rearwardly and downwardly through the lower opening` 8 of the member 5, and is also carried downwardly and forwardly through the opening 12 in the member 6, after which the ends of the two stretches of the flexible element 17 are stitched together as indicated by 18 in Figs. 1 and 2 at a point immediately below the lower end of the member 6. Carried on the face of the member 6 and connected to the said member 6 by rivets 19 or other appropriate means is a resilient or yielding clamping portion 20, of vulcanized rubber or other material compatible with its function. The said clamping portion 20 is of a greater length than width and is arranged with its greatest length horizontal as illustrated.' It will also be noted that the said clamping portion 2O is provided with a longitudinal lip 21 arranged in spaced relation to the face of the base member 6, and is further provide-dwith ends 22, the said ends 22 being resilient because of the inherent resiliency of the clamping portion.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in the practical use of my improved stocking supporter, the bail 4L is adapted to clasp and hold a considerable portion of a stocking on the clamping portion 20 which is desirable because it contributes to the strength of the connection between the stock- Vmg and the supporter and also because it tends to effectively avert tearing or wearing lbail from the clamping portion 20.
of the stocking. It will also be apparent that an important characteristic of my improvement resides in the hinge connection between the base members 5 and 6, this be- 5 cause the said hinge connectionpermits of the base being readily flexed rearwardly so that without side edgewise movement of the base or the bail, the bail may be quickly and conveniently swung on and off the clamping portion 20. Inother words when tion 2() between the lip 2l of the clamping portion and the face of' the base member 6 in fastening a stocking to the supporter, and that the side loops il of the bail are adapted for the same purpose to cooperate with the yielding end projections 22 of' the clamping portion 20.
llhen my improved supporter is associated with and connected to a stocking to be supported, the upper portion of the stocking will be confined between the base of the supporter and the bail 4 as in my patent aforesaid, and it will also be appreciated that when the improved supporter is in use there is no liability of' the stocking being casually disconnected from the supporter when the wearer is in seated position and there is no pull on the strip l.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Pat- 40 ent, is
l. The, herein described stocking supporter comprising a flexible suspending element, an upper base member having parallel openings in its upper portion and a bar between said openingsand also having a central pendent tongue and an opening in the lower portion thereof and integral barrels at opposite sides of the upper portion of the tongue; the upper opening of said upper base member receiving a loop of the flexible suspending element, a lower base member havingl an upper tongue extending through the opening in the tongue of the upper base Amember and hingedly connected to said tongue and also having an opening in its lower portion, a resilient clamping portion of greater length tlianwviclth fixed to and extending fromthe face of the lower base member and having a lip spaced from said face, a broad and open bail having a lower cross bar adapted toV cooperate with the lower side of' the resilient clamping portion and also having inwardly directed trunnions at its ends journaled and secured in the barrels of the upper base member, and a flexible tape having two thicknesses disposed back of the upper and lower base members and the hinge connection between said base members and extending through the upper openings in the upper base member and having a loop receiving the bar between said openings andl also extending through the lower opening of the lower base member and having a lower portion receiving the lowermost portion of the lower base member; he said flexible tape being of greater width than the tongues of the upper and lower base members-and alsoV of a greater width than the length of the resilient clamping portion on the face'ofv the lower base member.
2. In a stocking supporter, the combination of an upper base member having acentral pendent tongue in the lower portion of' which is an opening and also having barrels at opposite sides of the upper portion of said tongue, a lower base member having an upwardly extending central tongue ar-V ranged in the said opening of the upper kbase member and hingedly connected thereto, a resilient clamping portion of greater Ylength than width carried by and extending from the face of the lower base member, a broad and open bail having a lower cross bar to cooperate with the lower side of said clamping portion and also having inwardly directed trunnions `journaled and secured in the said barrels of the upper base member,y and a flexible tape arranged back of the'base members and connected with the upper portion of the upper base member and the lower portion of the lower Ibase member; said flexible tape being of a greater width than the tongues of the upper and lower base members and also kof a greater width than the length of the resilient clamping lportion on the lower base member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
