To @ZZ whom z't may concern Be it known that I, JOHN NAGY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vest View, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamping-Machines, of which the following is a specication.
This invention is for a device for marking articles, and relates particularly to a machine for marking or embossing characters on sheet metal articles, such as cans, can covers, caps, etc.
The primary object of the invention is to provide improved means :tor holding the cooperating type members comprising dies and matrices, having corresponding projecting and recessed characters respectively, and improved means for insuring proper positioning of the dies and matrices.
My invention may be understood from the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an end view of .the type carrying means and type;
Fig. 2 is a section on line II-II of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line III-III of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the type;
Fig. 5 1s a plan view of a part of the bed of the machine;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another form of type.
In the drawings, A represents the upper movable type carrying member or plunger of a stamping machine, and B is the lower fixed supporting member or bed. The movable member A includes a rod 5 having a block 6 on the lower end thereof. lThe block 6 has a channel or guideway 7 in its lower face which has undercut or rabbeted sides. Slidable within the block 6 is a type carrying block 8. The type carrying block has a channel cut in its upper face and a type receiving slot 9 cut in it. One side of this slot is provided with serrations 10 which' form V-shaped grooves along that side of the slot.
Projecting through one side of the block 6 and having its inner end arranged to project into a bore in the type-carrying block 8 is a pin 12 which is urged inwardly by a spring means at 13. This pin serves to assist in locating the type carrying member in place, and provides means for detachably Speciiication of ILctters Patent:

retaining it in place after it has been properly positioned.
The type carrying block 8 may receive either the dies or the matrices, and I have shown matrices 14 retained therein. The lower end of each matrix 14C has a recessed character therein. At the upper end of each matrix are laterally projecting lugs 14a and 14th. The lug 14h is considerably thicker than the lug 14;, as shown in Figs. 2 and f1, for the purpose of enabling the typesetter. by feeling the lugs, to readily determine in what position to place the type. To further insure proper positioning of the type, each matrix has a V-shaped projecting portion 111e adapted to fit into the correspondingly shaped groove in the type receiving slot 9. The lug 14a is designed to rest on the bottom of the channel in block 8, while the flat upper end of the matrix is Hush with the surface of the block. llfhen in position, as shown in Fig. 1, the matrices 1li are firmly held in place and are prevented from movingaip or down.
The member B includes a block 15 having a recess or guideway therein in which is removably set a type carrying block 16, having a cylindrical projection 163 thereon. In the projection 16l is a slot 17 having one side 18 thereof serrated to form V-shaped grooves therein. rlhis slot is designed to receive dies 19 which are generally similar to the matrices 14 and which have the characters projecting above the face of the die. One of the dies is shown in Fig. 6. Extending partway along one side of each of the diesis a V-shaped rib 19a adapted to fit into one of the V-shaped grooves in the type receiving slot 17 and thereby insure proper positioning of the type.
In order to hold the block 16 in such position that the dies will be positioned directly beneath the matrices, a vertically reciprocable pin may be provided at 20. The end of this pin is adapted to engage a hole with which it is brought into register, its operation and construction being similar to that of pin 12. It will be understood that the dies and matrices have corresponding characters, and that they must be accurately positioned.
The removable type holding blocks 8 and 16 enables the type to be removed from the press while retained in the block, whereby other blocks with diiierent types can be insert-ed in the press. Accordingly, it is not necessary to take down and set up type every time a change is to be made. rIhe blocks can be easily inserted and removed. rIhey could also be made to hold more than a single line of type by providing additional slots similar to slots 9 and 17. The type members are so arranged that they may be conveniently and accurately positioned, and cannot Vbe turned in the Wrong direction when inserted in the holders.
In operation, the sheet or metal, can top, or other article to be marked is positioned between the plunger A and bed B. As the plunger descends, the article is pressed between the dies and matrices, and is embossed with characters corresponding to those on said dies and matrices.
What I claim is:
l. A machine for marking articles comprising a plunger member and a bed member, said' plunger and said bed member having guidexvays therein, a type carrying bloclr slidable in the guidevvay in said plunger, a set oi type removably carried in said block, said block and type having cooperating parts to prevent the type from being inserted in a Wrong position, a type carrying block slidable in the guideivay oi' the bed, one end of the guideivay and one end or the block having cooperating locking means therein for holding the block in proper position, a set of type movably carried in said second type carrying block, said block and typeJ also cooperating to prevent the type from being inserted in a Wrong position, one set of type being matrices and the other set being dies.
2. A machine for marking articles comprising a plunger member and a bed member, a type carrying block slidably and re movably mounted in each member, type removably retained in each of said type carrying blocks, and means for positioning the type carrying blocks in the respective members in which they are mounted, said means being arranged to prevent said blocks from being locked except when they are inserted in proper position, the type carried by one of the blocks being matrices and those carried by the other block being dies.

A press for marking articles comprising an upper member and a lower member, one of Which is movable relatively to the other, the upper member having a guide- Way therein, a type carrying block slidable in the guideivay, said block having a slot therethrough and a recess in its upper face, types passing through the slot and having lugs at their upper ends, said lugs and upper ends being received in the recess on the upper l'f'ace of the block, the upper ends or" the type being adapted to bear against the bottom of the guideWay and be flush With the upper face of the block. i
4. A press for marking articles comprising an upper member and a lower member, one of which is movable relatively to the other, the4 upper member having a guide- Way therein, a type carrying block slidable in the guideivay, said block having a slot` therethrough and a recess in its upper tace,
types passing through the slot and having tivo lugs at their upper ends, one of said lugsl being thicker than the other lug, said lugs and upper ends being received in the recess on the upper face of the block, the upper ends of the type being adapted to bear against the bottom of the guidevvay and be flush with the upper face of the block.
