ROLL-SCRALPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application led January 27, 1921. Serial No. 440,473.
To all lw hom t may concern Be it known that I, TERENGE MGCAULEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roll-Scrapers, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in roll scrapers for metal plate machines.
The object of the invention is to provide a scraper attachment which can be readily applied in position, has few operating parts and which may readily be attached to any rolling machine now in use.
A further object is to provide a scraper attachment which scrapes the ends of the rolls free of grease which would ordinarily work toward the center of the rolls, tending to injure the sheet of metal being rolled.
A still further object resides in providing a roll scraper which effectively scrapes the ends of the rolls, removing therefrom the surplus metal, the scrapers being adjustable to regulate the pressure upon the rolls.
These and other objects are obtained in the apparatus described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rolling machine showing the roll scrapers in position.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of one of the roll Scrapers, removed.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation showing a modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates the end standards of a metal plate machine and 2 the rolls journaled in standards and operating upon the metal plate 3. A roll scraper of a type comprising the present invention is used to remove the grease and surplus metal from each roll. The Scrapers are arranged so that they rest upon both ends of the upper roll as well as both ends of the lower roll.
Each scraper 5 comprises a supporting plate or member provided at its ends with an arm which is perforated at 6, to contain suitable ball bearing and movable fastenings 7 to secure the same to the standards at the ends of the machine. The scraper has a tapered wearing edge 8 which is removably inserted in a dovetail key slot 9 on the end of arm 5 to remove the grease, oil or surplus metal from the rolls, when they rotate as indicated in Fig. 2.
By referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the Scrapers are arranged upwardly and inwardly from their outer to inner ends and constantly rest upon the rolls, in this manner scraping any grease, oil or superfluous metal and thereby cleaning the rolls.
With reference to Fig. 4 which shows a modified form of my invention, numeral 12 shows a ratchet wheel secured to the journaled ends 13 of the upper scrapers 14, resting on the roll 11, a lever 15 mounted rotatably on the ends of the journal 13, and a locking pawl 16, pivoted on the outer standard 17, to engage the ratchet wheel 12. The lower lever 15 is mounted rotatably to the end of the journal 13 of the lower Scrapers 14. A ratchet wheel 12, is journaled on 13 and inside of lever 15.
The ratchet wheel 12 engages locking pawl 16 retaining the scraper 14 constantly in contact with roll 11.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the Vminor details of construction may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
What I claim is In a device of the class described, a frame, pairs of rolls mounted therein, and arranged for coperation with one another, pairs of Scrapers pivotally mounted in said frame and directed inwardly for contact with the ends only of said rolls, one pair of said scrapers being positioned for coperation with each roll, and means for adjustably retaining said Scrapers in position.
