To all 'whom may concern.'

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Nowfion, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hunary, residing in Chicago, in the county of oolr `and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Containers, of which the 'following is a speciiication.

This invention relates in general to containers and has more particular reference to containers comprising a tight friction cover fitted upon a gasket carried by the body and compressing said gaslret against the opposing mouth of the body.

The principal object of the invention is the provision of a hermetically closed triction top container which can be opened readily with the hand and without the necessity of using any pry-olf tools or implements or requiring the provision of any opening devices, consisting merely ot a onepart body, a one-part cover and an interposed gasket.

A. still further object or" the invention is the provision of a container of pleasing appearance and economical manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a pren erred embodiment thereof.

Figs. 4;, 5 and 6 are perspective views showing the cover, gasket and body separated from each other.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention l have shown a fiat circular container comprising a body 1 and a cover 2. The body l is of the usual cylindrical term and is provided at the top with a curled false wire edge 3. The cover consists merely of a top or flat part 4L .and a cylindrical flange 5. The flange 5 is offset above its bottom edge at 6 to engage the bead 3 and a gasket 8 is interposed between the bead or wire edge 3 and rests in the oli'set part 6. The lower part of the cover flange 9 extends straight down below the bead. The gasket is preferably positioned in the cover before closing .ot the box and the box closed by merely pushing the cover tightly over the edge yof the body, and the parts are so constructed that the gasket in this action is compressed 1 anc. a hermetical seal formed. The box be opened by grasping it as shown on the drawing and pressing in on two opposite sides of the cover. rlhe engaging portions ot the top and cover are of different flexibility, with greater flexibility in the cover. rllhe pressure of the lingers produces a slight detorn'iation and the cover springs or snaps oil. indeed the box may be opened if suffi'- cient pressure is exerted at a single point in the depending part 8 oi the cover liange.

lt is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be better understood from the foregoing description and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacricing any of its material advantages, thc form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.

i claim:

rlhe combination of a container body having its top edge formed in an outwardly turned curl, a cover therefor formed with a shoulder adapted to be supported by the top of said curl when the container is closed, the edge of the cover being formed in a vertical lange which depends from the outer part of said shoulder around the outer side of said curl and extends below the bottom of said curl, and a vertically thin gasket arranged between the curl and the said depending flange and against which the flange engages tightly, said cover being disengageable from the body by pressing inwardly against said depending cover flange at a point below said curl of the body.
