Be it known that we, LEONARD J. HOGAN and LEONARD L. FUTTMAN, citizens oi? the United States7 residing at l/Villiamsburg, in the county of Towa and State oi' Towa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Vtfater-Trough, of which the following is a specification.
This invention rela-tes to improvements in water trough devices7 more particularly to poultry watering troughs, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utilityot devices of this character.
This invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved device with the cover removeda Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the improved device with the cover in place taken along the line 2 2 in Fig 1, and
Fig. 3 is a view on a reduced scale showing the improved device in end elevation.
This water trough is provided with a housing indicated in general by the numeral 10 and provided with a bottom 11 having depending flanges 12 positioned in the pocket 13 formed at the lower end of the walls of the housing and secured by rivets or other fasteners 111. A collar 15 is positioned about the housing at the base thereof and secured by the fasteners 14k thus pro viding a base flange which will assist in retaining the housing in an upright position.
This bottom and the walls are provided with. vopenings 16 for admitting air to the interior ot' the housing thus supplying the necessary oxygen for proper burning of the lamp 1'? placed in the housing and resting on the bottom 11. This lamp in the form shown is of the two burner type, but it is to be understood that the lamp will have the necessary number of burners accordingly to the size of the trough. In order to permit access to the interior of the housing for removing the lamp and replacing it there has been provided the doorway 18 normally closed by the door 19 slidably mounted in the guideways 20. This door 19 will be normally closed and only opened when it is desired to remove the lamp for refilling or for cleaning the interior of the housing. l
The drum or reservoir 21 is positioned in the housing and is provided with an axle 22 the end portions of which extend beyond the ends of the drum and rest in the bearings 23 -formed in the upper bridges of the supporting bracket 24: secured to the end walls of the housing. This drum is provided with a water passage or opening 25 inclosed by the neck 26 and is further provided` with an air pipe 27 so that air can pass into and out of the drum when necessary. The collar 26' and pipe 27 are of such length that when the drum is swung to the position shown in Fig. 2 the collar and pipe will extend into the water pan 28 beneath the water line thereof thereby providing a water seal which will prevent the Vwater from flowing out of the reservoir into the pan beyond the desired amount. A weight 29 is positioned at the outer end of a lever arm 30 secured to the drum and serves to permit easy rotation of this drum as well as serving as an abutment for engaging the bracket at one end oi the housing thus preventing the drum from swinging beyond the desired amount.
When this device is in use the drum will be in place as shown in Fig. 2 and in order to till the drum it will be swung upon its pivot pin thus rotating the drum a half revolution and placing the neck or collar 26 above the drum as shown in Fig. 1 instead. oi beneath the same. Tater can be poured into the drum through the water passage 25 and air will be forced out through the pipe 27. As soon as the drum is illed it can be swung to the lowest posit-ion and the water will flow out through the water passage 25 and through the pipe 27 into the pan 28 until the pan is filled to a point slightly above the mouth o' the neck. This will provide a water seal about the neck 26 thus shutting ofi the ilow or' water from the drum until the water has been reduced in the pan from drinking or by evaporation to such a point that water will again flow from the drum and return the water level to the normal point. This pan extends through the walls of the housing and the animals will drink the water from the extended end portions of the pan. In order to support the outer end portions of the pan there has been provided a bracket 31 which is U-shaped and extends about the end portion of the pan and has its end portions of its arms turned up as shown at 38 and in 'parallel relation to the wall of the housing. The end portions 33 of the bracket is secured to the walls of the housing by suitable fasteners which also pass through the end portions of the bai'lie 32 Which baffle extends into the pan to cover'the opening through which the pan passes and thus prevent trash from passing into the interior of the housing. Therei'ore any trash which may drop into the end portions of the pan Will be kept outside the housing and can be easily removed.
rIhere has thus been provided a Water trough Which in so constructed that the drum may be easily filled and which is further so constructed that the passage of Water out into the pan will be automatically controlled and which is further so oonstructed that trash Will be prevented from passing into the pan beyond the baffle. There has further been provided a Water trough Vin which heat may be provided through the medium of the lamp 1U thus providing means for preventing freezing 0f the Water when the lamp is lighted and the cover 33 put in place. There has further been provided a trough in Which cleaning Will be very easy and the cover and drum can be removedV from the Vhousing and the lamp then removed and the housing easily and quickly cleaned.
What We claim is:
A Water trough comprising a housing, a pan positioned in the housing With its end portions extending through the Walls of the same, U-shaped brackets attached to the rims of the extended portions of the pan and With upturned ends, a battle member disposed transversely of the panv With its intermediate portion depending into the pan and its terminals extended betweenV the upturned ends of the bracket and the housing, and fastening devices operating through the upturned ends, the extended terminals of the bathe member, and the housing.
