CHIMNEY-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1921.
Application filed October 22, 1920. Serial No. 418,807.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, JOHN G. KoUnnLKA, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Antigo, in the county of Langdale and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney- Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in means for cleaning chimneys or smoke fines and the like by compressed air.
The object of my invention is to provide a compressed air container adapted to be inserted within the flue or the like, having means which permits the escape of air into the flue when a certain pressure is reached within the container.
A further object of my invention is to pro.- vide an air container with a breakable diaphragm that is broken when a certain pressure is reached, thereby causing a sudden movement of the air Within the flue. Further, when the diaphragm breaks a jar or vibration will be caused within the flue, thereby causing the soot to be broken away from the flue walls, and at the same time blowing the lighter material out of the top of the chimney, while the heavier falls to the bottom.
Further, my invention contemplates a pneumatic means for removing all foreign matter from said flues in a minimum of time, and with a minimum of expense and inconvenience.
My invention consists of the matters hereinafter described and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a chimney with my improved cleaner applied through a flue opening therein.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 3 of the cleaner, and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a cylindrical container, the opened end of which has applied thereto and eccentrically arranged thereon a metal plate 2. The body of the container 1 has thereon, adjacent the plate 2, a crescent shaped member 3, the periphery of which lies in the same plane with the periphery of the plate 2, and interposed between the members 2 and 3, and secured thereto is a band 4, the ends of which may be secured to the container 1 at its lower portion, if so desired.
The whole device, as described, is applied within a fiue opening, as shown in Fig. 1 and held therein by the fingers 5 and 6, one
.of which 5, is secured to a bolt 7 passing through the members 2 and 3, while the other Gis movable thereon, so that they may engage the inner and outer surfaces of a chimney walhand be held thereto by the movement of the winged nut 8, thus securely locking the container in place.
The plate 2 has positioned therein and so arranged as to lie centrally of the container 1, an opening surrounded by an externally screw-threaded collar 9 secured to the plate 2.
The collar -9 has secured therein the end of a cylinder 10 which projects within the container 1, and is provided at its end with a check valve 11. The outer end of the cylinder 10 is closed by a screw-threaded cap 12, screwing upon the collar 9, and having the operating handles 13. Through the center of the cap 12 passes the hand operated piston rod 14, one end of which is provided with the usual handle 15 while the other end has thereon the piston. The latter, I have shown as composed of a flexible disk 16 positioned between washers of different diameters.
The container 1 has adjacent its closed end an opening 17 positioned in the top wall and around which is secured a collar 18, the outer edge of which is externally threaded and adapted to receive therein the flange 19 which clamps between it and the collar 18 a breakable diaphragm 20 made of rubber or the like.
In operation, the device is applied as herebefore described, and the air pump is operated, the air being drawn within the same in any suitable manner; for instance, through the center of the piston rod 1%, the same being provided with a suitable check valve to prevent the escape of the air when the piston is moved down on its operating stroke. When this stroke occurs, the air passes through the check valve 11 into the container 1. The operation of the pump contlnues until a certain pressure is reached within the container 1, after which the diaphragm 2O breaks and permits the air to escape into the chimney flue.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantagei of the herein described invention will be What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
' l. A device of the character described comprising a container and means for holding the samein a flue opening, means for creating a pressure within said container, and breakable means at one end of the cont ainer for releasing the same when a certain pressure is reached. a
2. A device ofthe character described comprising a container adapted to be placed within a flue opening, adjustable means for holding the same therein, a hand operated pump having its discharge end Within the container and adapted to create a pressure therein, an openingbeing formed adjacent the end of the container, and said opening being closed by a breakable diaphragm adapted to release the pressure from the container when a certain pressure is reached.
3. A device of the character described comprising a'container having thereon adjustable means for holding the same Within a flue opening, means Within the container for creating'therein a pressure, an opening being formed adjacent the end of the container, a breakable diaphragm for closing the same and detachable means for holding:
said diaphragm in place. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand-at Antigo, in the county of Langdale and State of Wisconsin.
' 7 JOHN G; 'KOUDELKA.
