resident of Manchester, county of Hillsborough, State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Rocker-Shaft Supports for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts. a y
This invention relates to improvements in lay rocker shaft supporting means for looms 1 and the object thereof is to provide means 15 which otherwise would be imposed through for sustaining a part or all of the weight,
the rocker shaft upon its bearings.
It is found in practice that the constant rocking of the oscillating lay rocker shaft produces a wearing of the shaft on its bearings which in time permits a play or lost motion in the bearings which interferes with the proper operation of the loom. An eXcesslve wearing of the bearings lowers the lay to such an extent that the feeler is lilrelyto strike the wall of the shuttle instead of en tering through the feeler slot therein. Furthermore, the looseness of the bearings permits a jumping of the lay and in some instances an endwise 'movementof the lay,
so that the movement of the lay is irregularz, This interferes with the proper operation of the 10011191101, consequently, results l in imperfect weaving I am aware that heretofore various means have been provided for supporting or adjusting the rocker shaft to compensate for the wear which occurs between the shaft and its bearings, such as are described in the patent to Davis No. 1,278,443, granted September 10, 1918, but in all such cases the supporting means act directly upon the rocker shaft itself. The
object of the present invention is to provide supporting means which act upon the instrumentalities carried by the rocker shaft and serve to sustain a part or all of the weight which otherwise would be imposed upon the bearings of the rocker shaft.v

The constructionthus described may be and is of the usual type. In such constructions the weight of the swords, the lay and other mechanisms which, are supported by the swords is sustained by the rocker shaft 5 and th constant oscillation of the lay in time wears the rocker shaft or its bearing or both, so that considerable lostmotion is caused and eventually the lay 1S suffi- -ciently lowered to interfere with the proper operation of the shuttle.
I The present invention consists in providing-means, preferably resilient means carried by the side frames, for partially or .wholly supporting'the weight of the swords,
- lay-and other instrumentalities which otherwise would be carried upon the rocker shaft, for the purpose of relieving the pressure of therocker shaft on its bearings and, consequently, eliminating or reducing the wear between the rocker shaft on its bearings, so
that improper operation of the lay, due to wearing of the bearings, will be avoided.
.A. preferred form of supporting means which is illustrated herein comprises a bracket having a web lei; which is bolted preferably to the inner side of the web 2 of th side frame and is provided with an upwrardly extending forked portion, one arm 15 of which rests upon the upper edge of the web 2 of the side frame, while the.other arm 16 desirably is reinforced by a strengthening web 17.- The arms 15 and 16 are provided with alined journals in which a shaft 1 8 is mounted and preferably is secured by a set screw 19. A standard 20, preferably having a transversely extending cylindrical end portion 21,'is pivotally. mounted upon the shaft 18. The upper end of the standardQO extends through and is'reciprocably mounted in av h1g2? extending laterally upon a bracket 23 which is secured by bolts 2-1 to the lay sword.
Resilient means preferably are interposed between the bracket which is secured to the side frame and the bracket which is connect- .ed to the sword.

The pivotal mounting of the standard QO'enables the spring to act properly through the relatively narrow arc of vibration of the'lay swords so that substantially all the pressure may be relieved from the bearings of the lay rocker shaft.
Inasmuch as the swords are located within the side frames and adjacent to them the action of the supporting members for the swords serves to prevent any endwise movement of the lay which might result from loose bearings or other conditions. The construction of the supporting device is such that it may be readily applied to any of the usual types of looms without modification of the structure of the looms.
It will be understood that the particular embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is of an illustrative character and is not restrictive and that various changes in design, construction, location or arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
Having thus described in v invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a loom comprising side frames, a lay rocker shaft, bearings on said side frames for said rocker shaft and a rocking frame iiicluding a lay carried by said rocker shaft and supporting means acting, upon the rocking frame to relieve the pressure of said rorker shaft on its bearings.
2. In a loom comprising side frames, a lay rocker shaft, bearings on said side frames for said rocker shaft and a rocking frame including a la carried by said rocker shaft and resilient supporting means acting upon the rocking frame to relieve the pressure of said rocker shaft on its bearings.
3. In a loom comprising side frames, a lay rocker shaft, bearings on said side frames for said rocker shaft and a rocking frame including a lay carried by said rocker shaft, supporting means mounted on said side frames acting upon the rocking frame to relieve the pressure of said rocker shaft on its bearings and means for adjusting said supporting means.
4. In a loom comprising side frames, a lay roczer shaft, bearings on said side frames for said rocker shaft, lay-carrying swords mounted on said rocker shaft, supportii'lg means carried by said side frames actingupon said swords to relieve the pressure of the rocker shaft on its bearings.
5. In a loom comprising side frames, a lay rocker shaft, bearings on said side frames for said rocker shaft, lay-carryingi, swords mounted on said rocker shaft, supporting means interposed between said side frames and said swords acting to relieve the pressure of the rocker shaft on its bearings and positioned to counteract cndwisc movement of the lay.
6. In ,a loom comprising side frames, a lay rocker shaft, hearings on said side f ames for said rocker shaft, lay-carrying swords mounted on said rocker shaft, located between and adjacent to said side frames, yieldable supporting means interposed between said side frames and said swords acting to relieve the pressure of the rocker shaft on its bearings and to counteract endwise movement of the lay.
7. In a loom comprising side frames, a lay rocker shaft, bearings on said side frames for said rocker shaft and lay-supporting swords carried by said rocker shaft, and resilient supporting instrumentalities pivotally mounted on said frame engaging and supporting said swords.
8. In a loom comprising side frames, a lay rocker shaft, bearings on said side frames forv said rocker shaft, and lay-supporting swords carried by said rocker shaft, supporting instrumentalities pivotally mounted 011 said side frames having upwardly extending standards, springs 011 said standards and means on said swords slidably engaging said standards and supported by said springs.
9. In a loom comprising side frames, a lay rocker shaft, bearings on said side frames for said rocker shaft and lay-supporting swords carried by said rocker shaft, shouldered brackets secured to said side frames having standards pivotally mounted thereon, brackets on said swords slidably engaging said standards and helical springs surrounding said standards engaging said sword brackets and acting to relieve the pressure of the weight on said rocker shaft.
10. In a loom comprising side frames,a lay rocker shaft, bearings on said side frames for said rocker shaft and lay-supporting swords carried by said rocker shaft, shouldered brackets secured to said side frames having standards pivotally mounted thereon, brackets on said swords slidably engaging said standards and helical springs surroundings said standards engaging said sword brackets and acting to relieve the pressure of the weight on said rocker shaft and means for adjusting said springs.
11. A lay rocker shaft supporting instrumentality for iooms comprising a pair of brackets having relatively reoiprocable members adapted to be attached respectively to the side frame and sword of the loom and resilient means interposed between said brackets.
12. A lay rocker shaft supporting instrumentality for looms comprising a pair of brackets adapted to be attached respectively to the side frames and swords of the loom, a standard pivoted on one of said brackets and reciprocably mounted on the other and resilient means carried by said standard engaging the other bracket.
13. A. lay rocker shaft supporting instrumentality for looms comprising a pair of brackets adapted to be attached respectively to the side frames and swords of the loom, a standard pivoted on one of said brackets and reciprocably mounted on the other, resilient means carried by said standard engaging the other bracket and means on said standard for adjusting the tension of said spring.
