Be it known that 1, Louis JAROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 322 East 66th St., New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Belt-Buckle, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter more fully described, and its objects are:

First: To produce a belt buckle having a smooth or integral front, permitting an ornamental design thereon;

Second: To have the ends of the belt securely fastened to said buckle;

Third: To have said buckle secure in close ing, and easy to open; and

Fourth: To have said buckle simple, durable and inexpensive.

1 attain these objects by the belt buckle illustrated in the accompanying drawings or by any mechanical equivalent or obvious modication of the same within the scope of my invention.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a horizontal section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, showing the ends of the belt in elevation.

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views:

11 designates the shell of the handle piece of my belt buckle and 12 the shell of the socket piece thereof; 11a and 12EL are flanges at the rear of each of the said shells, which iianges extend from the top vand bottom to the middle of the rear of the buckle at the ends thereof, and they leave the openings 141- and 15 in the middle part thereof (when the buckle is closed).

therewith the thumbpiece 17, which consists of a strip of metal, narrower than the spring 16 and having an extension folded over itself, after forming the ridge 18 at the fold or crease; said extension reaches to within a short distance from the bend of the spring 16; this doubling of the thumb piece reinforces the same, and the ridge formed at the fold serves as an abutment for the thumb when compressing the spring 16 to release or open the lock of the buckle.

lThe lock consists of apair of slots 2O in the flanges 12a of the shell of the socket piece of my belt buckle and a pair of spurs 19 in the edges of the rear leaf of the spring 16 adjacent to they thumb piece 17, which spurs 19 are adapted to engage said slots 20 when the handle piece is moved toward the socket piece with the bend of the spring 16 extendinginto the shell 12a.

To release said spurs 19, the thumb piece 17 is pressed inwardly, whereby said spurs 19 are disengaged from the slots 20, and the handle piece' is then moved away from the socket piece before relaxing the pressure on the thumb piece 17 i To connect my belt buckle to the ends of the belt 13, I provide the gripping members 21, each in the form of a double or angular plate spring; the front leaf of each of said springs 21 has the lip 23 at the edge thereof,

and the rear leaf has theY setof teeth 22 aty the edge thereof; the flanges llaand 12a have also the lips 24- at their ends and the projections 25 at their inner edges `opposite said lips 24, as shown in Fig. 1. l

The gripping members 21 are made with their leaves at a coarser angle to each other than that shown in the drawings, before they are inserted into the' shells 11 and 12; the ends of the belt 13 are placed each between the lip 23 of the front leaf and thei`teeth 22 of the rear leaf of one of the gripping members 21, which are then forced into the ends of the shells 11 and 12 over the lips' 21 at their ends thereby forcing the two leaves of each of said springs 21 together and causing the teeth 22 to sink into the leather or other material ofthe belt 13, which is thereby gripped securely and permanently.

The projections 25, on the inner edges of the shells 11 and 12 keep the gripping members 21 from extending too far inwardly of my belt buckle,

Any other means for connecting my buckle to the ends of the belt may be employed, if desired,L Y.

It is evident that, as the locking and releasing means of my belt buckle are situated at the rear thereof, the front of the buckle is left integral or smooth and permits orna mental designs to be formed thereon; ,the

locking means being double, and the slots 20, and spurs 19 being situated same distance apart, the locking of my belt buckle is thereby secure; theV thumb piece'l'? being of ample length, the releasing of the lock is easy. Y

The gripping members 21 With the lips 24 at the ends of the shells 11 and 12 form unusually secure means for fastening the ends of the belt to the buckle. Many changes could be made in the details of my belt buckle Without departing from the main scope of my invention; l do not therefore restrict myself tothe details as shovvn in the drawings, but l intend to include also all mechanical equivalents and reasonably. obvious `modifications of the same Within the scope of my invention.

What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by letters patent is:

1. In a belt buckle a handle piece and a socket piece, each having an integral front, a pair of flanges in the rear of said socket piece, a pair of slots in said flanges, a pair of elasticspurs in the rear of said handle piece, said spursbeing adapted tof engage said slots by the motion of handle -piece toward said socket piece, and a means for disengaging said spurs from said slots.

2. In a belt buckle a socket piece and` a handle piece, each having an integral front, a pair of flanges in the rearof said socket piece, a pair of slots in said flanges, an angular plate spring at the rear of said handle piece, a pair of spurs on said spring` adaptedL to engage saidV slot andl a thumb piece made in one VWithsaid spring, and adapted to be depressed, thereby disengaging said spurs from said slots.

In abelt buckle a socket piece and a handle piece, a means for detachably interylocking said pieces and a means for connecting the ends of the belt to each of said pieces,

said connecting means consisting of an an- `guiar-plate spring for each of said pieces a lip at the edge of one of the leaves of said spring and a set of teeth at the other edge thereof, said springs being adapted to be forced into the ends of said pieces and to grip the ends of the belt between said lips and said teeth.

4. ln a belt buckle a means for connecting the ends of the belt to the two ends of the buckle, said means consisting of an angular plate spring for each end of said buckle, a lip at the edge of one of the leaves of said spring and a set of teeth at the other edge thereof, a restricted opening at each end of the buckle for receiving said springs, Which may be fcrced thereinto, vthereby causing said lips and said teeth to grip the ends of the belt placed therebetween.

5. ln a belt buckle a handle piece and a socket piece, each having an integral front, a iiange in the rear of said socket piece, a slot in said flange, `an elastic spur in the rear of saidliandle piece, said spur being adapted to engage said slot by the motion of said handle piece toward said socket piece, and

a means for disengaging said spur from said slot.

6. ln a belt buckle a socket pieceand a handle piece, each having an integral front, a flange in the rear of said socket piece, a slot in said flange, an angular plate spring at the rear of said handle piece, a spur on the rear leaf ofv said spring, said spur'being adapted to engage said slot, and a thumb piece, consisting of a stripV of metal made in one with said rear leaf and folded over on itself, forming a ridge at the fold, said ridge being adapted to serve as an abutment for the thumb when depressing said spring to disengage said spur from said slot.
