Be it known that I, Crrsnnns F. GUTH moon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typists CopyStands, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention is a copv-holder, designed more particularly for use by operators on writing or typesetting machines.
llhen copying from closely printed or written matter, or transcribing from notes,
typists not infrequently skip a line on the copy where similar words appear in adjacent lines and where no guiding means is employed to maintain the line of writing. To use a guide device, such as a ruler or 'ard, loses time and is also fatiguing to the operator.
A purpose of the invention is to provide a copy-holder which will add to the elliciency of copying typists by enabling them to accurately follow the copy by the movement of a guiding; element to indicate new matter at a speed equal to that with which the typist can copy on the writing machine, the speed of the guiding element being under the control of the operator and determined, if desired, by the movement of the operators Other objects and advantages will be come apparent from the following; detailed description of the invention, taken in connection *ith the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying the invention;

The invention comprises a table for supporting the material to be copied, and adjacent to the table is a slidable guiding element designed to be moved mechanically at the will of the operator from one portion of the table to another by means of an endless conveyor, preferably driven by a motor, the guiding element being under the control of the operator to be engaged with or disengaged from the endless conveyeiz A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,

but it is to be understood that the construe.- tion therein set forth is not to be construed as defining the limits of the invention, the right being reserved to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims. 1
Referring now to the structureillustrated in the drawings, a table or support 5 is provided to receive the copying material, and this table 5 is shown as having a shoulder 6 which terminates in a retaining flange 7. This shoulder 6 serves as a rest for a book or sheet of copying material, and, if a book be used, the retaining flange 7 serves in cooperation with a' guiding element 21, to be hereinafter more particularly refered to, to maintain the pages of the book in their opened. position. The table 5 is shown pro- .vided also with an extension 8 along one side thereof, which extension 8 terminates in a guide head 9. Adjacent the guide bead and formed within the extension 8 is a channel 10 shown extending from the top to the bottom of the table 5. This table is preferably mounted upon a frame to be presented to the operator on an inclined plane. The frame is shown as provided with a pin 'ality of inclined uprights 11 directly supporting the table 5, a top connecting. member 12 and front and side base members 13. The top member 12 may be connectedto the base members 13 by uprights 14:, shown as vertically arranged. Thecopy-holder is preferably a portable structure and may be mounted on feet 15 of any desired material.
One upright 11 of the table 5 may be formed with a side plate 16 which serves to mount at its upper end a pulley or roller 17 and at its lower end a similar pulley or roller 18, these pulleys permitting of the free movement of an endless chain or conveyer 19, the. movement cf the chain with relation to the upper surface of the table 5 being directed bythe channel 10. This channel 1O terminates at 10 near the'pulley 17 and at, 1O near pulley 18 to permit the endless conveyor topass freely from the channel 10 to the under face of table 5. This endless conveyer or chain 19 is shown provided with a plurality of projecting members 20.
Cooperating with the table 5 is a guide element 21 which may be in the form of a broad flat plate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, or may be of any other preferred structure. Thi element or plate 21 is shown provided also-with an angular section 22 connecting the plate 21 with a hinge or pivoted section 23. he pivoted section 23 connectsthe plate 21 to a channeled slidably mounted member 24: carried by the head 9. This member 24 may be in the. form illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 and serves to permit of the sliding movement of the guide element with relation to the table 5, it being understood that the guide element is nivotally mounted upon this plate 241 in any suitable manner, as by the pivoted pin 24:. 'The guide element is preferably provided with a dependmg tooth 25 designed to operate between a plurality of the projections 20 of the endless chain 19 when the guide element 21 is laid uponthe face of the copy reposing on the table or is moved to a position parallel with or against the table 5. When the guide element 21 is moved on its pivot 23 to a position away from the table 5, as illustrated by dotted linesin Fig. 3, the depending tooth 25 is then disengaged from the endless conveyer or chain 19.
It is desired that the copy shall remain stationary in front of the operator and that V the guide element 21 shall move over the face of the copy at a speed commensurate with the same at which the operator is reading the copy@ To accomplish thispurpose by manually controlled instrumentalities, there may be provided a motor 26 mounted on the frame member 13, which motor may be of any desired type, but shown in the drawings as an electric motor. This motor may be provided with a worm 27 meshing with a worm gear 28, which carries on its shaft 32 a sprocket-wheel 29, having the recesses 29*, which are designed to receive theprojecting members 20 of the endless chain 19 and impart ainovement to the chain 19, preferably in the direction of the arrow of Fig. 2, in order that the guide element 21 may move from the top of the table 5 to the bottom thereof. The movement of this guide element, efiected by the endless chain 19, may be controlled by a foot pedal 30, having suitable conductors 31 to the motor and to the source of electric energy.
The operator may move the guide element 21 to a position away from the table 5, such as that disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and then slide the element 21 on the bead 9 to a higher position on the table 5. Returning the guide element 21 to a position parallel with the table 5 causes its depending tooth 25 to engage between'two of the projections 20 of V the chain and thereby be moved by the chain downwardly towardth'e bottom of flange 7 of the table. Should the operator neglect to stop the motor or lift the guide element 21 before it reaches the flange 7 such flange 7 is so positioned with-relation to the bottom pulley 18 that the path followed by the chain in passing under the pulley 18 will serve to automatically disengage the tooth 25 from the chain 19 so that no injury will occur to the projections 20 of the chain by the neglect of the operator to disengage the guide lement 21 from the chain 19. The pedal 30 may be of any well-known character having variations in speed, so that the operator can control the starting, speed or stopping of the chain 19 by the pedal 80;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
1. A copy-holder comprising a table having a longitudinal guide channel at one side thereof, a guide element mounted for movement in a plurality of directions, an endless conveyer having one lead mounted to pass through said guide channel, and means carried by the conveyer to engage the guide element when in one of its positions to move the guide element longitudinally of the table.
2. A copy-holder comprising means to support material to be copied, an endless conveyer having projecting members, a guide element pivotally and slidably mounted adjacent the supporting means and provided with a depending tooth to be positioned between a plurality of said projecting members of the endless conveyor when the guide element is moved to one of its pivotal posi tions, and a pedal control device for an electrically operated means to actuate the conveyer at the will of the operator whereby the guide element maybe moved with relation to the copying support when in its engaging pivotal position. a
3. In a copy-holder, a table to support material to be copied, having a supporting shoulder at one end, a plurality of rollers carried bythe table, one of which rollers is positioned adjacent said supporting shoulder, and an endless conveyer mounted on said rollers, a guide element slidably mounted adjacent said table for movement longitudinally of the table, and means carried by the guide element to engage the endless conveyer, said shoulder serving as a rest for copying material and also to limit the movement of the guide element in one direction when automatically disengaged from the endless conveyer by passing beyond engaging limit of the conveyer over one of the rollers.
4. In a copy-holder, a table to support material to be copied, said table being provided with a guide bead and with a guide channel, an endless conveyer movable in the channel, a channeled plate slidably mounted on the guide bead, and a guide element having means to pivotally mount the same on the channel plate, said guide element being provided also with means to engage the endless conveyer when passing through the guide channel and when the guide element is moved to one of its pivotal positions for the purpose ofmoving the guide element across the table with relation to material to be copied and carried by the table.
5. In a copy-holder, a table for supporting material to be copied, said table being provided with a supporting shoulder at one end, which shoulder terminates in a retaining flange, said table having also a guide bead and a guide channel adjacent the bead,
