Description

i UNITED STATES.
rALMEi'i J. JoNEs, or'ron'r WASHINGTON, NEW Yonx.
EDUCATIONAL APPARATUS.
. Y Y 'lpplication led M317,
T o all-whom' it may concer/n Beit' known 'that I, PALMER J..JoNEs, a citizen of the United States of America, re-l siding a-t Port Washington, New York, have invented a new and useful Educational Apparatus, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates particularly to appa'- ratus 'especially useful for classroom instruction, and the main object is toprovide simple and inexpensive means by which the teacher'may with a minimum o f veffort and,` time set, up, various problems for computav y tion by the pupils.
Another object is to l enable the teacher to simultaneously display 'anu-mber of d1fferent problems. Y
Another object is to enable `vthe teacher to readily 'and quickly change theproblems.
Anotherj object is toenable the teacher.v to display1 variousfcharactersy for instruction purposes, such for instance, as problems, in-
various kinds.
st ructio'ns, commands, and references bof In' the simple form of invention illus-Y trated in the -accompanying drawings,- I' pro-y vide a frame in fwhich'is'mouiited y"aplurallr ityofy horizontallyV disposed setsfof rdisplayl members,v one above the other, eachoffwhich is preferablylongitudinally slidable so that the relative position of the figures thereon may be altered. Each is also preferably reversible so as to make a larger number of combinations possible.l Each may also be removable lif desired. I also prefer .to provide a plurality of vertical shields adapted to be mounted in front of the horizontal display members to cover up portions theref of. These shields are preferably horizontally adjustable andpreferably a plurality ofV them are mounted on a slide so that they may be simultaneously moved across the faces of the display members.Y In this way Iin the columnar arrangement. `tails will be understood from the following Vit is possible to alter the visible portions of the display members and thus change the displayed problems. I also prefer to provide means for definitely locating the display members sol as to maintain uniformity Other kde specification.
Figure 1 isa front view of apparatusL embodying the improvements of my `invention.
Fig. 2 is an end View and partial vertical section ofthe same.
Specification of yLetters Patent.
1920. serial No. 379,457.
` Fig. 3 is a detail end view of one of the display members with a guard on one face of it.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view o-f an attachment .for one of the display members.
Fig. 5 is an end view of a modified form of display member.
- Figs.r6 and 7 are end and plan views re-k spectively Of'other forms of display meml bers.
l Fig. 8 is a fragmentary perspective view of the upper end of one of the shields.
struction to permit the device tov be handled and supported on theV wall if desired.v A plurality of display-`devices 11 are provided one above the other-in the frame and each preferably mounted on a shaft 12 which permits it to be slid back and forth horizontally. Preferably one ormore sides of each display device has painted n or* printed upon aseries of numbers, and preferablyy the numbers are arranged differently on the different display members. To position the Patented oct. 4, 1921.

The frame 10 may be of'any'suitable con-l 7oV i .display mmbers'withthenumbers in uni-v.``
-form column arrangement, "I prefer to notch` Seach` shaft as at 13= and provideia spring 5 member such as 14,"adapted to snap linto thev `notches'.or"re cesses in the'shafts This'85.-
spring member yieldingly holds the shafts4 the shields across the faces of the display members. TheY shields are preferably re` movably supported, as for instance by pins 19 in slots 20. Preferably there is av pin 19 to correspond -with each figure on one of the display members so that any column of figures may be covered up by a shield hung on the proper pin. It is thus possible to display any set of figures desired by shifting the display ,members and the shields. By having some of. the surfaces of someof the display members blank, it is possible to more readily point out the desired problems.
Additioiiguard Such @'21 'may be piro- V vvided to be slipped over one' ,or more ofthe displaymembers sofas to cover that it maybe desired to eover up. On the other. Yhand, guards such as 21 with special signs 0r charactersvmay be provided to indicate the nature of the problem 0r call attention to various things in connection With the use of the apparatus.'
Somemeans is preferably `provided to hold the displayedmembers in their ,proper angu- Y lar relation.l In the construction shown, the
shieldshang-aeross the faces of the Ydisplay members and thus Vtend to hold them in position althoughthey Vpermit the displayV members to be rotated When-itis desired to doso. .Y Y
Obviously, the display .members maybe of different cross-sectional shapes, such as flat,A
as at llain Fig. 5.V They mayl also be in the" nature ofbands, such as lll?, and shown` in v v Figa@ and' guided around rods such-as 22, and raroundrthe rotating roller or drumgQB.Y
While. this Constructions may be more` expensive than thatshown infFigsifl and'Z,` it
It Will In'aall of lthe foregoinglit will be Yseen ing theteacherto erase the"problems.fromY ,the board and write down new probjems- .Y
