Description

F. l. SCHMIDT.
STAMPING DEVICE.
, -APPL|CATION 'mzo mm. 10, 1921.
PatentedSept. 27,1921.
UNITED sures PATENT OFFIC FRANK J. SCHMIDT, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION.
To A. STEIN & COMPANY, OF
STAMPING DEVICE.
Application filed March 10, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK J. SCHMIDT, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
, This invention relates broadly to improvements in hand operated stamping or imprinting devices whereby an impression is made upon any suitable surface by means of Contact therewith by an inked type.
An object of the invention is to provide such astamping or imprinting device. with means for Obtaining a substantially uniform impression regardless, within certain li1nits, of the amount of pressure applied to the stamp in making the impression.
Another object of the invention is to prevent tilting of the type and consequent smudging so common with the ordinary stamp unless extreme care is used In applyin same to surface to be imprinted.
I'hese and other objects are attained in the device illustrated. in the drawing in which- Figure l is a side view of the entire stamp; Fig. 2 is an end view of the stamp;
ig. 3 is an end view of the stamp showing type cushion compressed; Fig. 4 1s view of the bottom, or type face of the stamp; Fig. 5 is a detailed view in perspective of one of the side plates of the stamp.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The drawing illustrates a hand operated stamp of which A is the handle, B is the body block which can be of wood or other suitable material. The said body block B is grooved on its lower surface and in said groove is secured a cushion C, which can be of cellular rubber composition or other resilient material. Upon the lower surface of said cushion C is secured by any suitable means the type strip D. On each side of the body block B are the side plates E, which are secured to said body block by the rivets F. side legs accompanying plate E is a leg or projection G, these being of uniform length and projecting Specification of Letters lPatent.
a plan *body,

to a plane coincident with the face of the type when said stamp is under the proper compression as shown in Fig. 3.
It will now be seen that due to the support of the legs G the pressure between the face of type D and the imprintable surface will be approximately the same, substantially regardless of the amount of pressure applied to the stamp from above, thereby insuring a greater degree of uniformity in a number of impressions.
It will also be apparent that due to the supporting action of the legs G there is less probability of a tipping or rocking of the stamp from aperpendicular position with reference to the imprintable surface at the time of its application thereto, thus further insuring a uniformity Of impression.
here are other conceivable adaptations of the principles herein disclosed and I wish it understood that I do not limit myself to the structures shown and described. Therefore, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device of the class described means for resisting, after a degree of pressure has been established between the face of the type and the imprintable surface, further pressure between said face and Said surface. 2. In a device of the class described means for preventing, after a degree of pressure has been established between the face of the type and the imprintable surface, the application of greater pressure to one portion of said face than to another.
3. In a device of the class described, means for resisting after a degree of pressure has been established between the face of the type and the imprintable surface, the deflection of the body of the stamp from the angle at which it then rests with reference to said surface.
4:. A hand stamp comprising a handle, a ing, after a degree of pressure has been estab lished between the face of the type and the imprintable surface, further pressure be tween said face and said surface.
5. A stamp comprising a body member, a cushion attached thereto, type attached to a cushion, type and means for resistsaid cushion, and means for resisting after a degree of pressure has been established between the face of the type and the imprintable surface further pressure between said type and said surface.
6. A stamp comprising a body member, a
cushion, type, and pro ections from the body member, bearable upon the imprintable surface upon a partial compression of said cushion.
7. A stamp comprising a body member, compressible type, and projectionsfrom the body member, bearable upon the imprintable surface upon a partial compression of said typer FBANh J. SCHMIDT.
