T 0 all whom t may concern Y Be it knownl that l, ANDRO AUGUsTYN, subject of the Emperor of Austria, resident of East Derby, county of New Haven', and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
r1`his invention relates to improvements in locks, such as are adapted to be applied to doors, and has as its principal object the provision of means whereby the bolts .are doubly secured when in an engaged position.
A further object is to provide a lock adapted to be manually operated without the use of a key, and linally, to provide a lock which is considered to be burglar prooi.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the' accompanying drawings, forming a mafV terial part or' this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plank view of a lock showing its application to a door.

In the several drawings, the numeral 10 designates the door or movable part, and 11 the jamb or door casing, in which is set the keeper plate 12, held in position by screws in the ordinary manner, and provided with suitable openings for the reception of a pair of cylindrical bolts 14, both being rigidly secured to a rectangular sliding bar 15 operable transversely of the casing, and having at its opposite end a raised arcuately recessed head 16, contactable with which is the convexly curved end of a lever 18, mounted on the squared portion of a spindle 19.
Also secured upon the spindle 19, is a coiled spring 20, adapted to press the .lever inwardly or against the bar 15, the spindle also having secured upon it a dog 22, the point of which is contactable with a face showing cam 23, ,so as to be operated by it as it is rotated, the same being rigidly mounted upon a spindle 24, the outer end of which is engaged with a sleeve 25, having a mark 26 registerable with a circular row of graduaticns 27 as can best be seen in Fig. 1. Thus the position of the cam will be evident to a person from the exterior of the lock.
Allixed upon the spindle 24, adjacent to the inner cover of the lock casing, is a spur gear 30 meshing with a mating gear 31, formed with a sleeve 32, journaled upon another spindle l33, and having a protruding sleeve 34, pinned or keyed to the operating knob 35, by means of which the gears are rotated and by them the cam, causing the dog 22, to turn the spindle 19, through a small arc of a circle, and as the lever 18, is
resting against the end ofthe bar 15, which is `pressed in this direction by means of the springs 21, and is actuating thebolts 14, thus causing engagement or disengagement with the 1keeper 12.
rl`he bar 15 is provided with a slot 37, having an angular end 38, receptive of a locking pin 40,` the same being rigidly secured at its inner endto ay spring engaging lever 41, pivoted on the pin.42, and having its opposite end 43, engaged with a flattened part of the spindle 33and resting against a collar on the inner end of the spindle 33, so that as the same is caused to slide in the sleeve 34, by means of the knob 45, the lower end 43 of the lever 41 is operated and through it the pin 40 is extended or retracted through an opening in the lock casing in an obvious manner.
Extending from the opposite side of the lever 41, to that of the pin 40, is a stem 47, having a T-sliaped head 48, engageable in the opening 49 made through the cam 23 and from which extends an arcuate slot 50, adapted to receive the stem 47, so that as the cam is turned toward the left in Fig. 2, the pin 40 is held within the angular end 38 of slot 37 in bar 15, because the stein 47 will then be at the end of the arcuate slot 50.
Arranged to slide .longitudinally of the lock, transversely of the bolt element 15, is a plate 52, containing a longitudinal slot 53, through which the pin 40 also operates.
Movement is transmitted to the plate 52, by direct contact with another slidably arranged plate 55, in Which is formed a kjecting pins 58, of a disk 59 operating as a pinion and secured to the inner end 60, of the sliding spindle 33, so that as the spindle is turned by the knob 45, the plates 55 and 52, are caused to move rectilinearly, the eX- treme front end of the platel 55 being engageable in a slot 62, formed in the edge of the bar 15, so as to hold the latter in an outward position.
In operation, it is assumed that the bolts are in the unlocked' position as shown in Fig. 3 Vin which the pin 40 is held in the longitudinal slot 53 of plate 52 and the horilZontal branch 37 of the angular slot in the bar 15, while the springs 21 press this bar as far to the right as possible by the engagement of the head 16 with lever 18. 'it is now desired to lockvthe lock, the knob 35 is turned toward the right to rotate the gears in order to bring the cam 23 and its slot 49 in alinement with the Vhead48 ofY K' the bolt or pin 40 Ywhich position is indicated the left, the gears will be rotated and bring the cameyslot 49 out of alinement with the head 48 of the pin 40 which is thus held v.in this position. In order to further lockV the plate 15Ythe knob 45 mustbe rotated to the right again, which will bring the sliding plate 55 in engagement with theV slot 62 of the bar 15. j
When it is Vdesired to unlock the lock, the knob'45 is turned to the left in order to disengage the sliding plate 55'from the slot 62 in plate 15 and knob 35 is rotated toward the right to bring the cam slot 49 again inV alinement with the head 48 of the pin 40, which position is indicated by the mark 26 on sleeve 25, coming in register. with the predetermined number of the graduations 27.' Then the knob 45 is drawn out which operation willl actuatethe lever 41 to press pin out of the cam slot and its'other end will drop into the horizontal branch 37 of the slot in bar 15which in the meantime has been moved backward by the springs 21 so that the bolts 14 will leave their keepers and assume the position shown in Fig. 3. y
