STATES,
JOSEPH 1B. STEVENS, OF SIX MILE RUN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES G. FOSTER, OF SIX MILE RUN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ELECTRIC INDICATOR AND ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1921.
Application filed October 21, 1918. Serial No. 258,974.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Six Mile Run, in the county of Bedford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and, useful Improvements in an Electric Indicator and Alarm, of which the followin is a specification.
' he object of the invention is to provide means electrically operated, and including a lamp and a bell, for calling the attention of a person entering a building, such as a house or store, tothe necessity for cleaning his feet by using the door mat, the circuit for the lamp and for the bell, or for either one of these devices being completed by a circuit closing device operated when the individual entering the house steps upon a pivotally mounted member closing contacts forming a part of the circuit.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device and the position thereof in use, Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the casing of the indicating device, Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the con-v tact making device, Fig. 4: isa detail of the contacts, Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view of the circuits, etc.
In carrying out my invention I provide a casing designated 10 in which is located the battery 12 which may include the required number of cells, which supply current for the lamp 13 and for the electric bell or electric alarm designated 14:.
The casing may carry a series of guide members 15 in which removable letters 16 may be placed for the purpose of presenting any-desired advertising matter, and especially for presenting a suitable sign calling read Clean your feet.
the attention of the individual entering the suitably located with reference to the lamp 13 and the latter may be cut out by the use of a switch 19, during the day time, or when it is not desired to use the lamp. Luminous letters or other luminous means for showing the sign after dark may be employed.
The circuit closing device includes a stationary member 21 carrying contacts 22 and a hingedly or resiliently mounted element 23 carrying a contact 24 for completing a circuit between contacts 22 by bridging the latter. As shown in the drawings, contact 24 is in the form of a plate and projects below a second resiliently mounted and hinged element such as 23, so that pressure on either device 23 will complete a circuit. The resiliently mounted elements are hinged at their outer edges, the inner approaching edges being free. The first named contacts are respectively connected with wires 25 and 26 leading th the binding posts 27 and 28 on the casing.
I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction, but may make such changes, alteration or additions, as fallwithin the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
,A contact making device for use in front of a door, comprising a pair of spaced stationary contacts, a resiliently mounted element, a contact making element carried thereby, and positioned to bridge the contacts first named, and a second resiliently mounted element opposite that first named and positioned to be brought into engagement with the bridging contact element and render the latter operative.
In testimony whereof I aflix my si nature.
JOSEPH B. STE .ENS.
