The invention relates to pipe couplingsv and particularly to a coupling adapted yfor emergency use in connection with train or steam lines of passenger or freight trains, it beingV the principal object to provide a l coupling which may be easilyl and uickly Vapplied to the adjacent ends of a roken train line, thereby allowing the use of the n train line may be made.;

With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from-the `spirit of thel invention.

Edges 13 of the sleeves 12 engage the edges of gaskets 14 and are adapted to force said gasket 14 against the rings 15 vwhich are threaded on the endsv of the tubular member 5, said rings'jl being prevented from rotation'on'the tubular 'memberf by means of keys 16.
It will belseen that when` the jamming sleeves 17 are threaded towardl the ends of the tubular member 5 that the ends 8 of the jamming sleeves will freely rotate and force outwardly against the engaging rings 9 which action will cause the gaskets 10 to beiforced against the edgesLof the sleeves 12, the other edges of the sleeves 12 will be forced against the inner edges of the gaskets 14, which gaskets are prevented from end movement by means of the rings 15, thus it willbe seen that gaskets 10 and 14, at each end of the coupling .member will be compressed and forced outwardly into engagement with the walls of the ends 2 and 3 of the pipe line 1, thereby securely joining said ends and at the same time preventing leakage. l To additionall assure the proper engagement of the gas ets 14 the ends of the tubular member 5 are provided with apertures 17, said apertures 17 being in registration with theinner face of the gaskets'14, and through apertures 17 the pressure within the pipe line comes in direct contact with the gaskets in such a way as vto force them outwardly into engagement with the inner walls of the ends 2 and 3. It will be seen that if the gaskets 14 have not been compressed and expanded enough that the air pressure will furnish the necesf sary additional expansure. Also that if the joint is a poor one the pressure will extend around the threads which are in registration with the inner wall of the gaskets 14.
