Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1921 Original application Med May 19, 1920, Serial No. 382,645.; Divided and this application filedJune 2,
1921. Serial To all whom it may concern,
Be itknown that I, Rrormnn BAER, a citizen of Czecho-Slovakia, and resident of the tain new and useful-Improvements in Permutation-Locks,of which the following is a description. s
The resent invention relates to improvements in permutation locks, and has for its a lock adapted for use uponordinary house doors or the like, and
which may be operated with facility by one knowing the combination of the same.
This application constitutes a division of co-pending application Serial No. 382,645, which was filed May19, 1920, and entitled Permutation locks.-
A further object is to provide a lock which may be readily operated from one side of thedoor without the manipulation of the and which will auto- 2 when the door is closed. Other objects are to provide a'lock which will not readily get out of order, which will economical in construction, for house dooruse. It is further proposed to enable the changing of the combination whenever desired.
With these and other objects in view, em-.
ermutation means, matically lock itself bodiments of my invention are shown in the accompanying drawings,
and these embodiments will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finallypointed out in the claims.
I Inthe accompanying drawings: v

in locked position.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section view along the line 22 of Fig. 1.
-Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the bolt and lockingmembers.

Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the same $imi ar r rence sharw 'sr ind ate W and the front faces of respondingparts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
[which is mounted transversely in the casing 105 and held therein by a nut 26. y
The. said gears mesh respectively with a series of vertically movable block members 110, 111, 112, and 113, having toothedrear surfaces and mounted upon vertically disposed guide rods 114, 115, 116 and 117, held at their ends in the upper and lower sides of the casing. The contacting surfaces of the several block members are recessed and fitted within each other, the members 110 and 113 being recessed at their rearward portions as at 118 and 119, and thelmembers 111 and 112 at their forward portions,- as at 120 and 121-, so that the front faces of the membersllO and 113 are relatively wide the members 111, and 112 disposed therebetween, are relatively narrow- A circular recess or socket 122 is provided centrally ofthe several block. members, being common to allof them, and extending entirel across the members 111, and 112, and partially into members 110 and 113. Bela tively vertical shifting movement of the said members is adapted to so disarrange the seV- eral portions of the socket as'to produce a non-circular socket. vBy'manipulation of the ermutation means to predetermined ositions, the block members may be brought nto such positi I a-s indicated inFigs; 3 and 4, and in which the socket is circular.
Withinthe casing, and forwardly of the block members there is provideda bolt memher 123, guided between parallel plates 124:
and 125, and provided at its forward face with a nose portion 126, adapted to be projectedand-retracted through an opening 127 n the casing, and providedat itsrear face;
with a circular plug portion 128, disposed in line with the socket 122 in the circular position thereof, and adapted to be engaged therein, thenose 126 being retracted when so en aged, and being prevented from entering the socket in the non-circular position thereof, so that the boltis locked in pro V ejected position.
7 front face of the casing, a shaft 141 project-' 'ing from the rearside A handle shaft 129 is provided. above'thev guide plate 124, being journaled at its inner end in the casing, andat its outer end in-a bushing 130, a handle 131 being provided thereon} Interiorly ofthe 'casi'ng the shaft is provided with an arm 132, extending downwardly. through an opening 133 in the plate 124, and'engaging between pins "134 and 135, provided in the side of the'b'olt respectively 128 of theybolt is removed from the socket,
to automatically move the block members socket is destroyed.
I The 7 may be fastened, as at'137, to receive the bolt in the projected position thereof, and a keeper, mounted in relation thereto; comprising a. casing 138', in which is slidably mounteda bolt 139, adapted to be projected and retracted through an opening 140 in the of the. 'boltfthrough a hole 140 in the casing, a spring 142, provided'thereon, adapted to normally urge the bolttoward projected position, and in which position the door is locked when the nose engaged, causing the bolt 139 inuntil the bolt 126 passes beneath the same,
' whereupon it 'Will be projectedbymeans'of so when the bolt 126' is retraction of the bolt thespring, into locking position;
The door may be opened from the inside, projected, by manual the bolt for this purpose. V
I have illustrated and des'cribedfpreferre d and satisfactory invention, but it is obvious that changes maybe. made therein, within the spirit; and scope thereof, as defined in the,appended 'claimsi' I claim: l 1. In a lock, a casing, a shaft in said casing, a plurality ofsuperimposed relatively rotatable sleeves upon said'sh'aft, a plurality of gears respectively mounted i .upon' the inner ends'ofsaid sleeves,-the' outer ends of J so that the circular arrangementof the jamb is recessed, and astrike plate.
139, a handle 145, eX- f tending through a slotr146, being secured to.
embodiments of my said sleeves being exposed to permit of independent operation thereof to turn said gears, aplurality ofrelatively movable members having teeth engaging saidrespective gears, and having bolt engaging portions, a bolt in sald casing adapted to be retracted and pro eetech and having means to engage of said sleeves. beingfexposedrto permit of independent operationithereofto turn said gears, a plurality-ofrelatively movable members having teeth engagin said'respective gears. and-havingfbolt engaging portions, a bolt'insaid casing adapted to be. retracted andprojected, and having means to engage said bolt engaging sition, and in aipredeterminedposition of said'sleeve's in which said portions are in alincmentwith said. means on said bolt, and spring means adapted to move said members disaline said bolt engaging portionswhen sa d means onsaidbolt is removed therefrom." .3 a H 1 3; In a lock, a casing, a. shaft .in said casing, a plurallty ofsuperimposedrelatively pectively' mounted upon the rotatable sleeves upon said shaft, a pluralityof gears res inner endsofsaidsleeves, the ojute'r ends of saic'l sleeves being exposed .to permit of'independent operation thereof to turn said gears, a plurality of relativelyniovable members having" teeth engaging said respective 7 gears, and having I 126 ofthe bolt 123 is projected, The project-fa bolt in said-casing ing end of the bolt 139 is beveled, as at 144, so that when closingthe door with the bolt 126 projected, the beveled surface will be to be pressed" ,olt engaging portions, adapted to be retracted andprojected, andhaving means to engage a keeper having a bolt adapted to, be proec'ted and retracted, and adapted tobelock- 'ingly engaged with said first-mentioned bolt in the projected position thereof. V
4. In a look, a' casing, a shaft in said casing, aplural'ity of superimposed relatively rotatable sleeves upon said shaft, aplurality of gears respectively mounted upon the inner end of said sleeves, the outer ends of said sleeves being exposed to permit of independent operation thereof to turn. said gears, pluralityof relatively movable members having teeth engaging 'said respective gears, and havingbolt engagingportions, a
bolt in said casing adapted to'bel retracted and -proj ecte'd, and having means to engage said bolt engaging portionsin retracted position, and in a predetermined position of portions in retracted posaid sleeves which said portions are in lation with said first-mentioned bolt, as said alinement with said means on said bolt, a first-mentioned bolt is moved past said keeper having a spring pressed bolt provided spring pressed with a beveled surface adapted to be pressed to retracted position upon closing engagement of said first-mentioned bolt therewith, and adapted to be projected into locking rebolt. 7 10 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name.
RICHARD BAER.
