BOOK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 20, 1921'- Application filed January 26, 1920. Serial No. 354,055.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANGELA C. HINZMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved form of book holder by which a book supporting table or shelf is held in such'position by the arm of a chair or other device such as a lounge or davenport that the shelf or book support is immediately in front of the user of the book or papers to be supported by the shelf and in such position that the book or papers may be conveniently read or referred to. I am aware that devices of this general kind have been employed'heretofore and it is an object of my invention to provide an improved construction of clamping mechanism by which the device may be secured to the arm of a chair regardless of the shape or size of thearm and by which also adjustment may be given to the shelf in any direction.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing a preferred embodiment thereof in which- Figure 1 shows in a perspective view a part of a chair with my book holder secured thereto,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the clamping device employed to secure the book holder to the arm of a chair,
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of a device employed in connection with the vertical. sup
port ofthe book holder for holding it in angular position onthe clamp secured to the chair arm,
Fig. 4; is a modified View showing in perspective view a vertical support adapted for use to ho'ldthe book holder where the arm of the chair is unusually short,
Fig. '5 isa view of a modified form of support where it-is desired to use the book holder over a bed or a lounge, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing in detail in disassembled relation parts of clamping mechanism that may be used to fasten the shelf or board of the device to the supporting rod.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My invention consists in part of a clamp for supporting the bookhoider from the arm of a chair, this clamp being constructed preferably as indicated in Fig. 2 and conslstlng of two ' blocks 10 and 11 having substantially parallel cylindrical holes bored through them for receiving the cylindrical members 12 and13 which, when the device 1s m use, are in substantially a vertical po-. s1t1on. The members 12 and 13 have secured to their upper ends, outer and inner telescopic extensions 14: and 15, the inner one ofwhich is engaged by the threads of a screw 16 extending through the upper end of member 12 andterminating in a shoulder 16 and handle 16 by which the screw may be turned to move the extension 15 rela-' tively to the extension 14 to bring the blocks 10 and 11 together to clamp the arm of the chair or other device used tosupport the book holder. The members 12 and 13 fit freely in the cylindrical holes formed therefor in the blocks 10 and 11 and have formed at their lower ends slots 17 and '18 for receiving the inner ends of the retaining screws 19 and 20 used to hold the members in the blocks without preventing angular movement of the members in the blocks. The inner faces of the blocks 10 and 11 have preferably secured to them pieces of felt or other soft material for preventing marring or injuring the arm of the chair or the device used to support the book holder. and contains a vertical supporting rod 23 which loosely fits in said member. said rod having thereon a collar 24; which is movable on the rod vertically to any desired position. The collar 24 is provided with a flange 24 which has formed therethrough a plurality of holes 24* equidistant from the axis of the rod 23 for cooperation with pin 26 carried by the upper end'of the member 13 so that the pin 26 enters one of the holes 21" when the device is in use thus preventing angular motion of the rod 23 in the member 13, the collar24c at the same time preventing The member 13 is tubular vertical movement of the rod 23 downward plates 27 and 28 lie upon either side of the ball 30 supported by a stud 31 rigidly se-- cured to the shelf or board 32 as a result of which when the screw 29 is released the board may be moved in any direction relatively to the clamping plates and the clamping plates may be rotated angularly upon the rod.
In the event it is desired to support the book holder on a chair having unusually short arms, use may be made to advantage of the supporting rod '23 shown in Fig. 4. The rod 23 has an enlarged upper end through which an auxiliarly supporting rod 34 extends horizontally, the same being held in any desired position -in said enlarged end by means of a clamping screw 35. The rod 34 has formed at its forwardly projecting end an offset portion 34 to be engaged by the clamping plates 27 and 28, by means of which the book holder may be held in desired position. The rod 34 where it passes through the upper end of the rod 23 is preferably flat sided so that it will not turn in the rod 23 1 In some cases it is desirable supporting the book holder over a bed or lounge and this may readily be accomplished by the support shownin Fig. 5 which consists of a pedestal 36 having a base extending a sufficient distance to give stability to the device and a vertical column for receiving the lower end of the supporting rod 23 in the same manner that the rod is supported in: the member 13 in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The rod 23 has a horizontally extending upper portion 23 for engaging the clamping plates 27 and 28 in the same manner described in connection with the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
To provide a somewhat increased clamping effect on the part carried by the book shelf, the construction shown in Fig. 6 may be employed in which the clamping plates 27 and 28 are formed similarly to the clamping plates above described, the principal difference being that they are conformed to receive the end ofa cylindrical rod 31 used instead of the stud 31, said rod having near its outer end'a flangeor disk 37 which, when the clamp is in use, is between the clamping plates and preferably enters a recess in one or both of said plates for incrzeasing the clamping effect upon the disk 3 From the above description it will appear that I have provided a book holder which is adapted to a wide variety of purposes and furthermore that by my invention the clamp employed to support the book holder may be attached to arms or supports of any kind whether regular or irregular without injuring the finish of the supporting device and that any desired adjustment or position of the book shelf may be secured as desired by the user.

What I claim is 1. In a book holder, the combination of a clamp comprising two blocks having sub stantially parallel circular holes through them, cylindrical metal members having a sliding fit in said holes, telescoping extensions extending toward and engaging each other from the upper ends of said members, and a screw extending through said extensions to draw said members together, one of said members being tubular, a rod extend ing vertically through said tubular member, a holding means for retaining said rod in desired position in said tubular member, said rod having an offset portion at its upper end, a book support, a clamp connecting said support and offset portion to hold said support rigidly in desired position relatively to said oflset portion, and retaining devices in said blocks engaging said members to permit relative rotary motion between said blocks and members and to hold said members in said blocks, said holding means comprising a split flanged collar, the flange of said collar having holes therethrough, a bolt between the split ends of said collar, and a pin projecting from said tubular member in alignment with the holes in said flange.

In a book'holder, the combination of a clamp comprising two blocks having substantially parallel circular holes through them, cylindrical metal members having a sliding fit in said holes, telescoping extensions extending toward and engaging each other from the upper ends of said members, and a screw extending through said extensions to draw said members together, one of said members being tubular, a rod extending vertically through said tubular member, a holding means for retaining said rod in desired position in said tubular member, said rod having an offset portion at its upper end, a book support, and a' clamp connecting said support and offset portion to hold said support rigidly in desired position relatively to said oll'set portion, said offset portion comprising a bent member having a flat sided sliding engagement through said rod and a device for clamping said bent member to said rod.

A supporting clamp for a book holder comprising two blocks having substantially parallel circular holes through them, cylindrical metal members having a sliding fit in said holes, telescoping extensions extending toward and engaging each other from the upper ends of said members, and a screw extending through said extensions to draw said members together, one of said members being tubular to receive a supportin rod.
