Be it known that I, CLAUDE. M. Hammo- TON, a citizen of. theUnitcd States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention is a shipping receptacle and has for its objects the provision of a package that will occupy only about onehalf the space in return transportation when empty that it occu ied when shipped full, and, furthermore, t e provision of a package that is air-tight, secure, solid, and easily and tightly closed.
This package is especially adapted for the shipment of lime or like granular material, and, especially, for such substances as are susceptible to deterioration under the influence of moisture.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur,

Transportation rates depend sometimes on weight, but, also, very generally on the amount of space occupied. For this reason, it is a reat economy in business if a receptacle of a valuable kind that needs to be returned to the original shipper can be reshipped in knocked-down form, or nested relation so as to occupy less space.
The receptacle or package of this invention consists of a plurality of hollowed membets 1, preferably in substantially the shape of a frustum of a cone. The said members are preferablyformed of a light sheet metal, but may be of any material or strength and of any size or shape.
Preferably each of the said members is provided with a bottom 2, carrying a flange 3 for attachment preferably within the lower edge of its member 1, although the encircling of the said edge by the said flange 3 is a permissible alternative co s eration.
At the top of each of the members 1 is located an angle member, one arm 4: of which is attached either within or without the top edge of member 1, while the other arm extends as flange 5 for abutment with a similar flange upon the other cooperating member 1, completing the package. Bolts 6 and nuts 7 bind the two members 1 together to form a package such as shown in Fig. 1,

.Inuse both of the hollow members 1 will be loaded with the material that is to be shipped therein. Then the packing imple ment 9 or the packing implement 10 will be laid on top of one of them. Then the one that the implement has been laid upon is inverted upon the other, the packing implement 9 or 10 serving as a lid to hold the material within the member 1 that is inverted while it is being turned over. Then in the case of implement 9, the same is withdrawn and bolts 6 inserted in place and the two members 1 bolted together. The package is then ready for shipment. When the packing implement 10 is used, it may or may not contain bolt holes adapted to register with holes 8, and it may or may not be left in place between the two members 1 in the manner shown in Fig. 1. Whether intended to be left there or not it serves as a lid while one of the members 1 is being inverted over upon its fellow. If left in place in the way shown in Fig. 1 it serves as a gasket to exclude moisture in any form.
When the loaded receptacle has reached its destination and is to be unloaded the nuts 7 are unscrewed and the bolts 6 removed. Then the contents of both members 1 is removed in any desirable manner. The separated members 1 can then be nested as shown in Fig. 5 and transported wherever desired.
Snap fasteners, triggers, or other forms of catches or attaching means may be sub stituted for bolts 6 and nuts 7.
While Fig. 5 shows only the two members of one receptacle stacked together for return shipment, such members of several receptacles can be stacked together, in which event the relative saving of space in return shipment will be even greater than that stated above. Preferably, a long bolt will be used to bolt a plurality of these sections together for return shipment.
