UNITED STATE @ATENE QFFIQE.
JOHN n. PEnERsnN, or JACKSON, WYOMING.
FIREANN.
T 0 all w hom it may concern:
Be it known that L-JOHN D. PnDERsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Jackson, in the county of Lincoln and State of l'Vyoming, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Firearms, of which the Yfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates more especially to that class'of lirearms usually designated as small arms, .and a. principal object of the kind is described inV my patent No. 1,348,733, f
dated August 3, 1920, and granted on my copending application (renewal) Serial No. 311,689, filed July 17, 1919, but the improvements herein described and claimed are not illustrated or claimed in my said patent.
Therefore.,l for convenience of illustration, l have herein shown my present improvements as arranged and applied to the particular kind of auto-loading pistoln shown in the drawings of said patent, to which reference may be had. c
The features of my present grip safety device, are that it is a grip-stock or handle contained safety device, arranged to prevent firing ofthe firearm by locking the firing member or hammer and the trigger-scar when my device is in normal or safety p'osition, and where the firearm is provided with a sliding 'breechact'ion, to lock the sliding breechaction. Y
Another featureis that while this shiftable slidable member or controller serves to lock the firing member andV trigger-senr, and also to lock the sliding breechaction where the 'firearm is Vprovided Vwith such breechaction, it forms an interposed means or disconnector between the trigger-Sear and the trigger-member, so that pull on the trigger-member will not unlock the firingrmember or hammer and trigger-Sear, and sliding breechaction, as the case may be, except upon prior or accompanying compression of the grip-safety portion of my device.
Another feature is that compression ofthe grip-safety member of my device, when the v ,Specification of Iletters Patent. Pa'ehigd Sept, 13, 1921 Application filed December 1G, 1919. Serial No. 345,176,A I
same is in' normal or safety position, does' not release the sliiftable slidable memberl before mentioned, but sets or pre-arranges said grip-safety member for releasing said sniftable slidable member when said member is moved or shifted by contact orengage-V menttherewith of thetrigger-member due to pullon the trigger member.
' In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away of a pistol provided with-my gripsafety device, my device being in normal or safety position.
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary side view, partly broken away, of the rear of a pistol provided with my gripsafety device, showing the grips'afety member of my device slightly compressed preparatory to firing, the shiftable slidable member 'or controller being at the commencement of downward movement` to unlock the ring member or hammer and the trigger-Sear, andto unlock the sliding? breechaction, where the firearm has suchv breechaction, the trigger-member not yet being engaged or'in contact with theshiftable slidable member or controller to shift it. F 3, is a fragmentary side view, partly brokenl away, of the rear end of a pistol provided with my grip-safety device, showing the grin-safety member of my device compressed, the shiftable slidable member or Il l controller being'in lowered or down position, and the lower end thereof shifted or swung' inwardly due to pressure thereon of the trigger-member and thereby disengaged or unlocked from the grip-safety member, the firing member or hammer being in fired position `and unlocked from the trigger-Sear, and the sliding breechaction unlocked.
Fig. '4, is a sectional view of my gripsafety device on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
' My grip-safety device generally' denoted by G, comprises a grip-safety member G', which is hand compressible or yieldable, and is shown pivoted at its lower endY by means of Ypivot ping, to the frame or-rcceiver B of the firearm near the lower end of the grip-stock thereof. Figs. l, 2 and 3.
The member G closes the slot or space 2s formed in the grip-stock lof ythe pistol to receive the grip-safety device, and which slot lor space is of use in assembling the details of my device. The upper end G2 ofthe grip-safety member engages or contacts rearwardly with the grip-stock of the firearm y when the grip-safety member G is in normal or safety position. The top portion of the grip-safety member is slotted out at 7d, to furnish clearance for the hammer H and 7f. These prongs or lever-arms 7 f are located outside of, and clear of, the rear end of the trigger member F, and when the grip-safety member is'in its rearward or safety position, the prongs 7i are immediately below the under sides or bottom-sides 16 of the lower endsl of the shiftable slidable member or controller'N, which is thereby locked against downward movement. f
The grip-stock of the firearm is bored out to receive the spring 8, which is seated -inV the lower end of the grip-stock, and "at its upper end abuts or engages a sliding plunger 8, which slides in the boring for the spring 8" in the grip-stock. The plunger 8c is cupped'at its upper end to receive the rounded end of a lower spring rod or connecting rod 8b, which is pivotally attached at its upper end kto a sliding member or block 10, which slides in a -guideway 11, formed by the grip-safety member Gr and a slide face 82 in the grip-stock.V An upper spring rod or connecting rod 8V, is pivotally attached at its lower end to the sliding member or block 10, and is pivotally attached at its upper end tothe firing member or hammer H, the effect of the spring 8e being 'to throw or press the hammer'H forwardly at all times. When the hammer H is in its cocked position, Fig. 1, a line drawn through the center of the pivot connection of the upperv spring rod 8bV to the hammer H and through the center of the pivot which connects the upper spring rod 8b and lower `spring rod 8b, to the sliding member or block 10, will pass tothe rear of the center of the plunger 8c, which being seated in the gripstock provides a fixed pivotal point. Hence the action of the spring 8c tends to hold the grip-safety member lGr in its rearmost posi- `l`tion when the hammer is in firing position orrcocked. v v
If the hammer H is released toyits fired or uncooked position, Fig. 3 after the upper end of the grip-safety member, as at G2, is moved to its forward position, a line drawn throughV the pivot connection of the upper spring rod 8b to the hammer H and lower spring rod 8b, to the sliding member or block 10, will-pass forward of the center of the plunger 8C, so that the action of the spring 8 will be to hold the grip-safety member G in its forward or compressed position. The advantage of this latter arrangement is that the reaction of the spring 8 on the gripsafety member G', due to the sudden arresting o f the hammer H when it strikes the firing pin of the firearm, will be neutralized and have no tendency to sting the hand of the user of the firearm. The shiftable memthe sear S, leaving a palr of locking prongsforward side of the opening 12, and thereby to allow the lower end of the controller to swing or shift rearwardly and inwardly un- Y der rearward pressure on said lower end,
when the controller N is in downward or V,unlocking position. Figs. 1- and 3, the shiftable slidable member or controller N has shoulders 14p, provided with engaging surfaces 14", and extending lower ends 15, and
.under sides or bottom-sides 16 of said ends 15 engageable kwith the locking prongs Tf, of the grip-safety member G. The lower end or bottom .17, of the shiftable slidable member or controller N, preferably has an upwardly inclined surface 18, or other suitable means, for engaging a spring operated actuator 19, the purpose of which surface or means is, by engagement of the actuator 19 therewith, to force the lower end of the controller N outwardly, or in other words, to return the controller to position after shifting thereof. The actuator 19 is located in a suitable boring in the grip-stock below thelower end of the shiftable slidable member or controller N, and comprises a spring 20, seated in said boring and abutting aprojectable member or nose-piece 21, which preferably has a rounded end 22 Yor other suitable means for engaging the lower end of the shiftable slidable member or controller N, the tendency of the actuator 19, being to move or thrust the shiftable slidable member or controller N, upwardly and to retain it in this position, and also to push the lower end of the shiftable slidable member or controller N outwardly as above expivotally attached to the frame of the firearm and is provided with a firing or locknotch4 85, and an eccentric cam face 8k.
The sear member S, is pivotally attached to, the grip-stock and is provided with .a
locking shoulder 17b which is engageable` with thev lock-notch 8j of the hammer H,
Vand is provided with a face or surface 17 rear side of the shiftable slidable member or` controller N. For the purpose of maintaining the gear member S in such engagement or Contact,
plained. The firing member or hammer is a contactor 23 is provided. The contactor 23, consists of a springsocketed at one end in a recess in the grip-safety member G and. socketed at therother end in a recess in the sear S, the tendency of the contactor 23,'
being to hold thel projecting end 17d of the sear in engagement-with or to press against the rear side of the shiftable slidable member-or controller N, when the grip-safety member G is .innormal or safety position,
Fig. 1.
The trigger member F, is wardly by pull thereon, and is movable forwardlyvby means not shown, and the rear end -thereof passes through an opening 2 inthe grip-stock and is engageable with the forward side ofthe lshiftable slidable member orfcontroller,` N, Awhich opening 2" is of suilicient width to permit upward and downward movement or playof the-triggermember F therein.
. ofthe VSear, through pressure of the contactor '23, is in engagement with rear side of the shiftable slidable member or controller N, but the ends 1"(t of the sear are out of -engagement with the upper surfaces, 14e, of the shoulder 14D, of the shiftable slidable member 'or controller, the shiftable controller N, thereby acting as a disconnector,
or interposed means, between the rear end of the trigger-member F and the projecting end 17dof the Sear.
yThe shiftable slidable member or controller N thus is in upward or locking position, and is so held bypressure of the actuator V19 and preventedfrom downward movevend portion of the under sides or bottom sides of the lower ends A15, the purpose of this arrangement being now explained.
1 Grip-compression of the" grip-safety member VG disengagesthe endV G2 thereof from the frame, and AInoves the locking prongs 7f forwardly or outwardly, Fig. 2, so that it is the forward or outward end pori tion of the bottom sides 'of the lower. ends 15, of the shiftable slidable member Aor controller which are then in engagement with A the 'locking-prongs 7, and the grip-'safety member i'sthus Vset,- or perarranged, for
movable rear-v releasing by shifting the lower end of the shiftable slidable member or controller inwardly or rearwardly by pull upon theV tri gger-member VF, to release the lockingprongs Tf and also forcing inwardly or rea-rwardly the projecting end 17d of the scar S to revolve the sear, thereby unlocking the shoulder 17"v of the sear from the cocknotch 8j of the hammer H and permitting movement of the hammer to iredrposition. The-shiftableslidable member or controller N, is then in downward or unlocking position, being moved to this position by the engagement vof the eccentric cam face 8k with the engaging surface or face 17 of the sear when the hammer is actuated-.to fired position :by the firing spring, the ends 17t ofthe arm S10 ofthe sear'in its revolution or movement engaging or bearing down upon the upper surfaces 14e, of the shoulder 14:1 of the 'shiftable slidable member or controller, and forcing it downward against the pressure of the actuator 19. The actuator' 19, when pressure of sa'id ends 17t is relieved forces or moves. the shiftablevcontrollerN upwardly and forwardly or outwardly, and returns the' shiftable slidable member or controller N to upward or locking position'. Release of grip-compression returns the grip-safetymembe1` to normal position orposition of safety to block theV shiftable slidable member or controller. in locking position.
