maoLLEY-WIRE CLAMP.
1,390,369, v Application led .Tune 9,
To @ZZ w/wm -fiz may concern.'
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. MATrHns, a citizen of the United States, residing at hilansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-Tire Clamps, of which the following isa specifi-- cation. v
f My invention relates to a clamping device for engagingand supporting a trolley wire orv other conductor from an overhead support.
vvThe invention hasfor its object a con-- struction which will simultaneously grip a conductor and the supporting hanger and the grip upon each will increase proportionatelyand such gripping effect is brought about by a single operation and at the same time the device is rotatably adjustable with reference to the overhead supporting member. so that it may -be-brought into proper alinement with the trolley wire or other conductor. i i
These objects and others .which will be obviousto one skilled in the art are brought' about by the construction, relation and combination off elements fully described and set forth herein and Shown lin the drawing accompanying this specification.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my in vention in full. as installed upon a trolley wire and overhead hanger. y y
Fig. 2, shows an end elevation view ofthe device Yin Fig. l.
Fig. Bis a sectional .view ofmyinvention when it is made to, justengage an 4overhead supportand loosely .holdinga trolley wire between the aws and this view is taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. f
Fig. 4C is a sectional view ofmy invention on theline 3 3 of Fig.l l and shows the Arelation, ot parts when the device has been" fully linstalled and.l is thoroughly gripping the trolley wire and the'hanger support.f
5 is a section onthe line of Fig. 6 is alsection onthe line 6 6 of Fig. 3. f Fig. 7 is a view., of the supporting element ofvmy, device..H A,
Fig. 8 is a bottom view ot' the supporting element shown in Fig. T andthe dotted lines, representing one of the clamping Specification of Letters Patent.

members, willbe used later i'n describing the method of assembling the parts.
Fig. 9 is a modification of engagement between parts later, referred to.V
Patented sept. is, 1921. A
In the preferred form of clamp embodying myinvention7 althoughlthere are many modications which can be'made from this form andustill be within the scope ofmy' invention, I employ, a pair of clamping Y jaws l l provided at their lower end with proper means 2 for engaglnga trolley wire conductor. At vthe upper end of each jaw 'is af ange 3; and a recess 4, the' flange vand recess on each Ajaw being semi-circular but when the two jaws larefplaced side'by side they approximate an entire circular flange land recess. yN ear the upper end ofthe jaw members isav shoulder 5 which `I have sh'ownas having a beveledsurface although this surface might be at other, angles than that shown in the drawing'. Oney modifica.A tion of the shoulder. 5 isshown in Fig. 9'.
To 'support the device *embodying my invention from an overhead hanger H, Iuse a vsupporting member. 6 which is internally threaded :toi engage the stud of theoverhead hanger and at its Ylower end is `provided with a flange extending inwardly indicated by 7 and forming a recess 8. v The flange' 7 is adapted to yengage in the recess 4c vofthe V -aws and the lianee 3 isada-)tedto enga-Ge' h C in the recess. 8 of the supporting member.
The flange -7 is not. entire but has an opening, from the outside as indicatedfbytlie numeral. 15in' F 8. V--This openingl permits theA assembling. of the aws and sup'- porting member as will be readilygunderstood by considering the dottedlines shown in Fig. 8 to represent the flange and recess 3 and respectively ofthe jaw member and positioned yas shown with respect to :the supporting member 6. VThe jaw represented byfthe dotted ,line is to be movedtoward the supportingmember 6 and toregister with the openingl and it will be seen that the aw will slip into the slot-l5 and fia-nge 3 will yenga-ge inl the groove 8 and thenv by giving the jaw a'halt' turnfwithin lthe supicel portingmember 6 the second jaw- Can be operated thesame as the first and assembled with the :supporting member 6. This per'- support member to maintain the jaws in-a clamping position, and means to secure the device to a hanger.
5. A supporting device to engage and clamp a conductor comprising a supporting member, means to engage a hanger, clamping means rotatably mounted within the supporting member and held in clamping position thereby and arranged to clamp a conductor, and an operating` member mounted on the supporting member and movable longitudinally thereof to engage the clamping means and move them into clamping engagement with the conductor and means on the supporting member engaging means on the operating member to prevent the removal of the parts ot' t-he device and limit the longitudinal movement of the operating member in one direction only.
6. A suspending device to engage and clamp a wire comprising a supporting member provided with means for engaging a hanger or support and provided with internal means to engage a wire clamping means, wire clamping means provided with means for engaging and clamping a wire and also having means to interlock with the internal means on the supporting` member to prevent separation of the supporting` member and the clamping means but permitting relative rotation, and a member adapted to engage and move the clamping means into clamping engagement with the wire and moving relatively to the supporting member.
7. A suspension device tol engage and clamp a conductor comprising a suspension member, a pair ot jaws and a collar mem-- ber, the suspension member adapted to support and retain the jaws together and provided with an internal recess andy shoulder and the jaws provided with an external recess and flange adapted to engage the internal flange and recess respectively ot the sus-- pension member to permit ot free relative rotation, the collar adapted to move relatively to the jaws and suspension member Vwhereby the jaws are made to grip the wire,
the suspension member also having means for attachment to a hanger or support.
8. A suspension device to engage and clamp a conductor comprising a pair ot clamping jaws, Aa supporting member provided with an external recess and an opening to the recess to permit assembling the clamping jaws and the supporting member, means on the jaws to engage the recess anu interlock the parts together but to permit relative rotation, means on the support member to engage a hanger or support, a
collar arranged to rotate with the'support member and to'be interposed between the jaws and the hanger and movable longitudinally to the supporting member to move Athe jaws into engagement with the conductor when the collar enga-ges the hanger and is rotated.
9. A suspension device to engage and clamp a conductor con'xprising a support-l ing member provided with means to secure the device to a hanger, two jaws, the jaws and supporting member provided with coacting means whereby the jaws are fulcrumcd within the suspension member and mounted to rotate relatively to each other, means projecting from each jaw to be engaged to move the jawsinto clamping engagement with av conductor and means to' clamping engagement with the conductor.y 1l. A suspending device to engage and.
clampa conductor comprising a` supporting member, means to engage a hanger, clamp- Y v ing means supported from within the supporting member and held in clamping position thereby and arranged to clamp a conductor, an operating member mounted on the supporting member vand movable longitudinally thereof to engage the clamping means and move them intov clamping en gagement with the conductor.
l2. A supporting-device to engage and clamp a conductor comprising a supporting member, means to engage a hanger, clamping means supported from within the supporting member and arranged to clamp a conductor, an operating member mounted on the supportingv member and movable longi tudinally thereof to engage the clamping means and move them into clamping en-` gagement with the conductor and means interposed. between the operating and sup.v
porting members to limit the relative movement of these two members in one longitudinal direction. y
In testimony whereof I attix my signature.
' SAMUEL b. MATTHES.
