2 SHEETS-SHEET 1.
, UNITED STATES,
V sreivrnlvn F. noun, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
OFFICE.
Y 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIGMUND F. KoHN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and more especially to wind instruments comprising means for producing sounds of difi'erent pitch and notes with a rattle or bell at one end and a mouth piece at the other end, the whole having the shape of a key and adapted to be otherwise decorated.
These and other details and the objects of the invention are more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
'Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved toy partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the mouth piece.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a modified mouth piece.
Figs. 1 and 5 are modified forms of the toy.
Figs. 6 and 7 show another modified form of instrument.
The toy is of the nature of a whistle or flute with the tube 10, a ring 11 and a mouth piece 12, the latter being tangential to the tube and terminating at the slot 13 so that the blast of air is forced into the same and the tube when it is desired to produce a musical sound. The ringll is a circular tube communicating with the tube at 13 and hav ing, perforations l lcomprising an octave of notes and adapted to be closed by the fingers of the operator and the appropriated one opened for the desired note. A loop 15 is provided at the upper end of the ring for hanging or to decorate the device, while within the ring is a rattle or bell 16 mounted 011 the stem 17 and divided into two sec tions and containing a ball 18.
As the sound travels around the ring, the blast, when released will cause a different sound at each opening 14 on account of the length of travel and vibrations, and songs may be played as with a flute.
The mouthpiece 12 may be provided with one or more notches to simulate the flange of a key, or if found desirable the tangential mouthpiece may be dispensed with and the piece 18, like that shown in Fig. 3, could be Specification of Letters Patent. "P te t d Sptfi; 1921 Application filed January 11, 1919. 7

adopted for convenience instrument.
In the form of toy shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the perforations 14 are made in the tube 10 and the ring is left plain and the bell is soldered within the same, but in the latter view the tube is provided with the telescopic sect on 19 to be slid in and out to produce variations of the note.
The ring 11 in Fig. 1 is a continuation of the tube and its extreme end is closed by the Wall 20 to which the stem 17 is secured, but it is evident that the bell or rattle 16 may be soldered or otherwise secured to the ring as shown in the other views.
It is obvious that the parts may be otherwise arranged or modified without departing from the essential features above described or the scope of the appended claims.
Another form of the instrument is shown as a modification in Figs. 6 and 7 where the tube 20 is a mouthpiece with the inlet 21 and outlet 22 with an overhanging lip 23 which directs the blast of air into a slot 24 at that side of the ring 25 and the sound is emitted from the perforations 26 around the edge of the ring and they are adapted to be closed by the fingers of the two hands as the device is held'to the month. One end of the ring is closed by a partition 27 so that as the blast of operating the travels around the ring, the sound passes outward and is varied according to the dis tance traversed by the air and the outlet opened.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a toy, the combination of a tube having outlets and formed as a ring at one end and whose other end is a radial extension of the ring portion, and a mouth piece and inlet in the extension.
2. In a toy, the combination of an endless tube having outlets and one end formed as a ring,'and a radial extension comprising the other end of the tube and having an inlet.
3. In a toy, the combination of a tube comprising a straight portion with a circular.
end part and having an inlet at the end of the straight portion and a plurality of outlets in the circular part, and a tangential mouthpiece at the inlet.
4. In a toy, the combination of a perforated tube straight at one end and terminating in a circular part at the other end, a telescopic part sliding in the straight end anld having an inlet, and a mouthpiece at the in ct;
5. In a toy, the combination of a teletion with outlets, and a tangential mouth scopic tube with a circular portion at one piece with anotch and located at the other end and having outlets, a movable tube in end of the tube. A 10 the other end of the tube, and a tangential Signed at New York, in the county of New 5 mouth piece. York and State of New York, this 28th day 6.
