Description

B. E. HILBORN. CLAMP.
ABPLICATION FILED NOV. 9, 1920- 389 5 7 PatentedSept. 6, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
" BERT E. HILBORII OF SPOKAN E, WASHINGTON.
femur.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERT "HILBo RN, a citizen of the United States, and resident 1 of Spokane, in the countyzof Spokane and State ofWVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps,
of which the follow ng is specification.
My invention relates to a device for holding cards,-post'ers, signs and various other similar advertising and display matter in proper position uponfsupporting surfaces, and its object primarily 1s to eliminate the use of tacks, paste, stickers and other forms of retainers heretofore employed for this purpose. 7
The device ofmy invention consists of a clamp, any number of which are adapted to be permanently secured to a support such as a bill board, a wall, the side of a vehicle or other surface, in any desired relation, for releasably [holding the edges of a card, poster, sign or the like, whereby'the same is held in position fordisplay and whereby substitution of one card or 'sign for another may be quickly effected with 7 little effort and at minimum cost.
Furthermore, it is a purpose of my invention to provide a clamp for the purpose mentioned which will operate to hold a card, poster .or sign directly in contact with a supporting surface so that the same will remain perfectly smooth and not liable to become torn during the period it is displayed.
My inventive idea is capable of embodi-- tion in a preferred form and that its scope card, poster, sign or the l ke, such as desigis as defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the different views Figure 1 is a view in front elevation showing'the manner of holding a card, poster or the like by my improved clamp;
Fig. 2, an enlarged edge view of one of my clamps; and
Fig. 3, a perspective showing the parts of my clamp in separated relation.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 designates the base of my. clamp which is preferably formed from rigid sheet metal and includes apertured cars 11 conveniently disposed thereon to receive screws, bolts or "Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 6,1921. Application and November 9,1920. seria no,422,925.
same tofa sign .board, gwall or other support. .Projecting perpendicularly outward from the base a threaded stud l2 and adportion 15' thereof, near one end, bowed, out- Wardly, and at .itsother endlhasan inturned flange 16. The bowed portion 15 terminates in a reversely curved lip 17 and an opening 18 is formed in the plate through which the stud 12 freely passes when the base 10 and this plate are in assembled relation, in which position a wing nut 19 is threaded on the stud whereby the plate 14 may be forced into clamping relation with the base plate.
By particular reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings, which shows the relative clamping position of the plates, it will be observed that the inturned flange 16 cooperates with an edge of the base plate to prevent relative twisting or turning movement of the plates, and it will also be observed that the bowed portion 15 overlies the bowed portion 13 and that the lip 17 extends slightly beyond the adjacent-edge of the base plate as well as somewhat inwardly of the outer face of the latter.
'VVhen the plates are in assembled relation with the wing nut 19 threaded on the stud, the outer end of the latter is preferably burred over to prevent removal of the nut other devices for permanently fastening the,
and consequently eliminates the possibility of parts of the clamp becoming lost. Burring of the end of the stud, however, will in no way effect the operation of the device.
With a preferred number of my devices secured in desired relationto a support, a
13 and 15, after which I turn the nut 19 to clamp the edges of the card between ad-- jacent faces of said bowed portion. When secured by the clamps the card is maintained in position flat against the surface upon which the base plates 10 are mounted by the lips 17 as plainly shown in Fig. 2.
I claim: 1 a 1. A device of the character described comprising a base plate adapted to be per comprising a base plate liavingia' bowed portion, a clamp plate having a wed por: tion overlying said first bowed portion, said clamp plate including a lip adjacent to the bowed portion thereof and reversely curved with respect thereto, and means for forcing said plates together whereby a portion of an article is held in contact with a surfaceby said lip.
3. A device of the character described comprising a base plate adapted to be secured to a support,ja-cla'mp plate, means to force said plates together to' clamp an article therebetween, and a lip on said clamp plate the terminal of which acts to hold the article clamped between said plates in con- 1 face of the base plate whenjsaidplates are I clamped together whereby the article clamped between said latesis maintained in fiat contact with sai support.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature. -v BERT E. HlLBORN."
