INVENTOR. GwfiWe/VIY/er A TTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT oFFic STEAM-BOILER.
1,389,262, Specification of Application filed. June 4,
To allwhom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, Gusravn MILLER, a citizen of the United States residingat Los Angeles, in the county of os Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of
which the following is a specification.
My object is to make an improved steam boiler, and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure l is a top plan view of a steam boiler embodying the principles of my invention as seen looking in the direction in cheated by the arrow 1 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central section on'the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
The main central boiler casing 1 has vertical fire flues 2 extending through the bottom 3 and through the top a. The auxiliary boiler casing 5 is annular and fits around the main boiler casing 1 so as to form an annular space 6 outside of the main boiler casing 1 and inside ofthe auxiliary boiler casing 5.
Horizontal tubes 7 connect the chamber 8 of the auxiliary boiler casing 5 to the chamher 9 of the main boiler casing 1. The superheater casing 10 is mounted above the main boiler casing 1 and a pipe 11 connects the chamber 12 of the superheater to the chamber 9 of the main boiler casing 1, and pipes 13 and 14 connect the chamber 12 of the superheater to the chamber 8 of the auxiliary boiler casing 5.
A domeshaped cap 15 covers the superheater 10 and extends downwardly around the upper end of the auxiliary casing 5. The
feed water pipe 16 is tapped into the lower part of the auxiliary boiler casing 5 and the water is controlled by a valve 17. The steam pipe 18 leads from the upper part of the superheater 10 and the steam is controlled by a valve 19, there being a safety valve 19 in the pipe 18 in front of the valve 19.
A water column 20 is connected at its lower end to the lower part of the auxiliary boiler casing 5 and to the steam pipe 18. The water glass construction 21 is connected to the water column 20. A pan 22 is mount- .ed below the main boiler 1 and the auxiliary boiler 5, and the boiler may be fired with any suitable means preferably a gas burner or an oil burner.

the auxiliary boiler 5,through the pipe 16 and overflows through the tubes '7 into the main boiler 1. The principal part of the firepasses upwardly through the fines 2 and around the main boiler 1 past the superheater 12 and then downwardly and out through the exit between the lower edge of the cap 15 and the upper end of the auxiliary boiler 5, and the water will boil in themain boiler and make steam, but itneed'not boil inthe auxiliary boiler. At the same time the water will become hot in the auxiliary boiler and as the water is exhausted from the main boiler the hot water will flow from the auxiliary boiler into the main boiler.
Allthe steam produced by both boilers will accumulate in the superheater 10 and the superheater 10 is in the reduced areabelow the cap 15, and even if the steam .qoes to the superheater in a foggy condition it will issue from the superheater through the pipe 18 highly heated.
Special attentionis called to the arrangement by whichonly a comparatively small part of the water need beboiled, thereby making it possible to get up steam quickly and to maintain steamwith a comparatively small fire, and at the same time have an ample supply of water to last for a considerable time. The dome-shaped cap 15 and its restricted exit serve to retain the heat whereby the boiler chambers 8 and 9 and the superheater 10 are most effectively heated.
Thus I have produced an improved or quick acting steam boiler comprising a central main boiler, an auxiliary boiler surrounding the main boiler and spaced there: from, connections between the main boiler and the auxiliary boiler, so that water will flow from the auxiliary boiler into the main boiler as the water is used by the main boiler, and a superheater mounted above the main boiler and connected to the main boiler and to the auxiliary boiler.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a steam generator, a main boiler, fire tubes extending upwardly through said main boiler, an annular auxiliary boiler surrounding and spaced apart from said main boiler, radially disposed circulation tubes connecting the main and auxiliary boilers, a superheater arranged above the main boiler and tubular connections from said superheater to the upper portions of the main boiler and auxiliary boiler.
2. A steam boiler comprising a main boiler, an auxiliary boiler mounted adjacent to the main boiler and spaced therefrom, means connecting the main boiler with the auxiliary boiler for establishing a circulation of the water from the top of the main boiler into the auxiliary boiler downwardly and back again into the lower part of the main boiler, a super-heater mounted above the main boiler in open communication therewith at its lowermost point, and overflow pipes connecting the super-heater with the auxiliary boiler above the level of the lowermost oint.
8. steam boiler comprising a main boiler having vertical fiues, an auxiliary boiler mounted surrounding the main boiler and spaced therefrom, tubes connecting the top of the main boiler with the auxiliary boiler, other tubes connecting the auxiliary boiler with the main boiler at the lower part thereof, a super-heating drum mounted above the main boiler, having its lower part in open communication therewith, and means connecting the superheating drum with the auxiliary boiler above its connection with the main boiler.
4:. A steam boiler comprising a main boiler having vertical fines carried by a top and bottom head, an annular secondary boiler surrounding the main boiler, discharge tubes connecting the upper part of the shell of the main boiler with the upper part of the secondary boiler, other tubes connecting the shell of the main boiler near the bottom with the lower part of the secondary boiler, a super-heating drum mounted above the main boiler, tubes connecting the super-heating drum with the top of the main boiler, other tubes connecting the super-heating drum at a point above its connection with the main boiler and connecting with the top of the secondary boiler, a water inlet tube for the boiler, and a steam discharge tube for the boiler connecting with the super-heating drum.
5. A steam boiler, comprising a main boiler, an auxiliary boiler surrounding said main boiler and a superheater mounted above said main boiler, flues connecting the main boiler with the auxiliary boiler and superheater, a cap forming a dome over the main and auxiliary boilers and extending downwardly over the auxiliary boiler and spaced therefrom, a fire box under the main boiler, and fire tubes extending through the main boiler and connecting the fire box with the space under the dome.
6. A steam boiler comprising a main boiler, an auxiliary boiler surrounding the main boiler and spaced therefrom, a fire box under said boilers, a cap forming a dome extending downwardly around the top of the auxiliary boiler and spaced therefrom to form an outlet for the productsof combustion, fire tubes extending vertically through the main boiler and connecting the fire box with the space under the dome, a superheater comprising a boiler mounted above the main boiler and over the fire tubes, tubes connecting the bottom of the superheater with the main boiler, a plurality of horizontally disposed tubes connecting the main boiler with the auxiliary boiler, a water inlet in the auxiliary boiler and a steam outlet from the superheater.
