Patented A119. 23, 1921 not carried on the regular plates, and it is desirable, and it is necessary frequently to print late news and extras without making new plates. It is also deemed advantageous by certain newspapers to print certain news or announcements in some color other than the black used for the printing of the body of the newspaper. All such devices are usually termed late news or fudge devices.
Objects of the present invention are to provide a late news device which is capacitated to print alternatively or selectively upon either side of the web which is running through the printing couples of a fast rotary perfecting press; to provide such a mechanism which is independent of the cylinders of the regular printing couple, that is the plate and impression cylinders employed in printing the body of the newspaper on both sides of the web; to provide such a mechanism capable of being selcc tively positioned transversely of the press and of the web to print in any desired position transversely of the web with respect to the pages and columns printed on the web by the regular printing couples of the press; to provide a late news mechanism reversible in its direction of rotation to run the web through in either direction; to provide such 85 a mechanism capacitated to operate in different sequential relation to the regular printing cylinders or printing couples of the press. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be pointed out later herein.
The invention broadly, as embodied, comprises a late news device having its own form cylinder and cooperating impression cylinder, with an inking mechanism for the form cylinder adapted to give adequate and 95 acceptable inking service. The late news device of this character is located relatively to, and correlated with respect to, the two cooperating printing couples or sets of cylinders which print the running web upon both sides, or perfect it, and with respect to the paper supply so that the late news or like supplemental matter may be printed by the late news device upon either side of the running web. More particularly as to the embodied form, the cylinders of the late news device are rotatable alternatively or selectively in either direction, so that either side of the web may be presented thereto to re ceive the late news imprint. More particularly, the late news device is additionally located and correlated with. respect tothe 'web supply and the printing couples so that the web, in connection with the reversibility r a' press asshown is capacitated to perfect fecting fast newspaper press is shown runnin to a folder, which folder may be central iy located with a similar printing mechanism upon the opposite side thereof. Such three webs, toslit and associate them, and

The web x, which may be derived from any one of a plurality of sources, such as a web roll 9or a-web roll 10, is run between the cylinders 1 and 2 and printed thereby uponone side in the usual manner.
The second rinting couple for the web w comprises a orm cylinder 11 having an inking mechanism 12, which may be the same [as that of the cylinder 1 and need not be described in detail. Cooperating with the form cylinder "11 is animpression cylinder 13, the web a: passing therebetween. and being printed 11 on the second side or perfected in a wellnown manner.
7 If it is desired to print the web m-upon one side only, it may e'guided past the cylinders 11, 13' of the second printing couple without passing therethrough' or being printed upon thereby, guiding rollers 14 bein located to guide web :11: fromthe cylinder 2 irectly to the associating and folding mechanism. The web a is shown going direct from the second printing couple over a roller 15 to a longitudinal folder or former 16 which may be either the first or the sole folding device of the folding mechanism 17 There is usually in such devices also a transverse folder and a delivery.
At 18 is shown a set of turning bars whereby theweb 00, after being slit by a longitudinal slitter, has its halves superposed or associated as at 00 and then run over the roller 15 and into the folder as already described.
The late news device for the first web is indicated by reference numeral 19, and the details of construction and operation thereof, as embodied, will be set forth at a later point as applicable to the late news devices of all the decks.
