IRA B. SAMPSON, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORKS FOR BOTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,820, dated May 13, 1873; application filed April 16, 1873.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA B. SAMPSON, of the city and county of Albany and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Oorks for Bottles, 850., of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved cork,
and Fig. 2 shows it as applied to a bottle for containing beer, 850.
My invention consists in cutting corks in such a manner as to combine the cylindrical and truncated conical forms, thereby producin g a cheaper and better article.
In manufacturing these corks I first cut them from the wood in acylindrical form. They in g this saving of material, I produce a cork that is more perfectly adapted to'the requirements of bottling ale, beer, mineral waters, and other effervescent fluids, as shown in Fig. 2, in which A is the cork applied to the neck B of a bottle shown in section. 0 are the fastenings for securing the cork to the bottle. These it will be seen lead in lines converging more directly to the center of the cork than can be obtained in using those of the overhanging tapering form commonly used; and by thus concentrating the resistance to the internal pressure of gases contained in the bottle nearer the central apex, I obtain a more secure fastening; this, together with the bold shoulder at the mouth of the bottle, produced by my improved form of cork, effectually prevents leakage.
What I claim as my invention, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a cork combining together the forms of the cylinder and truncated cone, as and for the purposes specified.
