I SAMUEL BUGHSBA'UM, OF CHICAG, ILLINI'S.
L :BELT-BUCKLE.' i
To all/whom t 'may concern.' Y 'Be it known that I', SAMUEL BuonsAuM,
a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Chicago,` in the countyof Cook and 'State f of Illinois, have invented a certain lnew aiid useful ImprovementV in `lelt-Buckles, of which the following is a full, clear, concise,
`and exact description, reference'being .had to the accompanying drawings, forming aV part of this specification.
. -This invention relates to belt `buckles and more particularly to a belt buckle'pro'vided with a knuckle joint clamping lever.
It is a purpose of the invention to provide a belt buckle'V with 'clamping' 'means coinprising acurvedbelt clamping element that is slidably and tiltably mounted in the front plate of the buckle and which is adapted to be moved into engagement withthe 'belt by means of a clamping lever' having an angular end portion va'dap'tedto engage the concave lface ofV said clamping element.
- It is a further purpose of the invention to so construct a belt 'buckle that very `little power need be applied to the clampinglever in order to clamp the belt end therein, and iii which'the belt will readily slide when the clamping lever is released. It is a still further ob 'ect of the invention to provide a belt buckle with a clamping means wherein the `clamping lever does not -contactwith the belt andconsequently no -mari'ingof the belt will occur. j
Other objects and advantages of the linvention will appearfas Vthe description of the accompanying drawings showing. several forms that my invention may take,proceeds.
.However,fI desire toihave it 'distinctly understood that I donotiiitendto limit myself to the exact details kof structure shown in the drawings and describedinthe specification, bi'itintend to 'includeaspart' of my invention, all such, obviousf'changes and l Vniodications of str uctureias would occur `to the Aside edge of the belt; t
proved belt buckle showing the same applied toa belt, the belt being partlybroken away;

the belt' in any way. Vhen the clamping lever 10 is moved in Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a further mod iedforin of clamping element;
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3 of a modified form of belt buckle; 'Y
n Fig. 7 is a similar kviewof afurthermodiliediorm;
Fig. 8 is a similar View -ofa still further modified form; and l Y Fig; 9 is a rear face view ofthe forni of buckle shown in Fig. 8.
Referring in' detail to thek drawings,.the
improved beltbuckle comprises a front plate V6 curved longitudinally as shown in Figs. 2
and 3 and provided with rearwardly extending side kflanges 7 that arefprovided with suitable openings for the pivot pin`9 Which is carried by the clamping lever 10 whichis `a short arm extending at substantially `right yangles 'to each other. The short arm 15 is adapted to engage a belt clamping membery 16 which'is curved as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and-which is provided withend ,portions vOr lugs y17 that are adaptedto operate in @slots 18 provided in the flanges 7.
preferably formed as shown in Fig. 3 so as I loop-13 on VThe lugs 17do not fit snugly in theslots l and have a looseV sliding movement therein so that vthe clamping member 16 will slide toward the front plate (Sand will also rock slightly relative thereto when the, clamping leverlO is kmoved in a clockwise direction 'into the-clampingposition shown in Fig.. 3. The member 15 moving along kthe concave face of the' clamping plate 16 will draw the same by a combined sliding and rocking vmovement into clamping position relative to the free belt extremity 19. By this arrangement, the clamping lever doesy not contact with the belt extremity andjtlius any scraping or biting action thereof which would injure the belt is removed, the clamping plate 16 being smooth r`and kbeing rounded on a gradual curve will' not injure from the plate yso as tofloosely contactwith the saine-and permit withdrawal of the belt end 19 frombetweenthe clampingjplate and the front plate. The clamping plate may be provided with serrations or. grooves or Y roughened portions as is shown for the clamping member 16 in Fig. 4, the member 16 being mounted in the front plate 6 in slots 18 provided in the side flanges 7 in a similar manner to the mounting of the plates 16 in Fig. 3.
In Fig. 6 is shown a belt buckle having a iront plate 26 curved longitudinally, and
, provided with rearwardly extending side flanges 27 between willich is pivoted the clamping lever 28 which comprises a long arm and a `short arm as previously described. The long arm is provided with ears 29, earrying the belt gripping means 30 engaging the belt extremity 31. T he short arm oi the clamping lever is adapted to engage a belt clamping member 32 which is curved as shown and which is provided with means engaging a guide slot 33 in eachl of the ears 27 in a similar manner as shown in Figs. 1
' to 5 except that a single guide slot is used on each side. As therlever 28 is swung clockwise the short end thereof is adapted to move the belt clamping member 32 toward the front plate 26 and clamp the belt extremity 34 between the said belt clamping member and front plate.
ln Figc/7 is shown a further modied form wherein the curved front plate 36 is provided with rearwardly extending side flanges or ears 37 between which is pivoted fthe clamping lever 38 which again comprises a long` and a short arm, said clamping lever being provided on its long arm with ears 39, carrying belt gripping means 40, engaging belt extremity 41. The short arm of the lever 38 engages with a belt clamping member 42, which is curved as shown and is pivoted between the ears 37 as at 43, said pivots being located to one side of the pivots 44 oi' the .lever 38, so that the curved belt clamping member 42 will move toward the front plate 36 when the lever y38 is moved clockwise so as to clamp the belt extremity 45 between said clamping member 42 and said front plate.
In Figs. 8 and 9 is shown a buckle havin a curved front plate 4 6, side members 4 and portions 48 bent toward each other to form a rear plate for said buckle, the members 48 are provided with extensions 49 curved as shown in Fig. 8, said extremities 49 forming curved resilient tongues integral with the front plate. The side members 47 are also extended to form rearwardly projecting ears 50 between which is pivoted the lever 51 having its long arm provided with ears 52 between which is pivoted belt end gripping member 53 engaging belt end 54. Vhen the lever 51 is turned clockwise the short arm engaging the curved tongues 49 thereof is adapted to move said tongues toward the front plate- 46 and clamp the belt end 55 between the tongues and the'front plate, the tongues having suiiicient resiliency to permit this action.
From the above it will be seen that a belt bucklel has been provided that will grip the free belt extremity securely without in any way injuring the same and withouty there being any contact between the pivoted member or clamping lever and the belt extremity, thus avoiding all wear between the clamping lever and the belt extremity.
Having thus described my invention what l claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
