Description
W. POTTER, lr.
Inside Blinds.
No 138,761. Paten'fed May13,1873.
@iQ/5M, @mfmmy UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. Y
WILLIAM POTTER, JR., OF ANDOVER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lIN INSIDE- BLINDS.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,761, dated May 13, 1873 application filed March 17, 1873. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WTLLrAu POTTER, Jr., of Andover, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Venetian Window-Shades, of which the following is a specification: l
N ntnre of the Invention.
This invention relates to and consists in the arrangement and fastening of the cords that hold the slats of Venetian blinds; also in the manner of arranging pulleys in the stationary top piece, in connection with the cords that raise and lower the blind as well as open and close the slats, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, Figure l is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan; Fig. 4, an enlarged section ofthe slats, showing the method of attachment.
A represents the top piece or stationary part that is screwed to the window-casing. The slats a a are the usual thin Wooden ones, having the two cords b b on each edge of the slats, near the outer` part, as is usual. Outside of this are supplementary cords or threads c c, attached to the cord b at cl, as shown. One of these cords c then passes upward over a pulley, e, in the piece A, and down over another pulley, f, in the opposite end of the piece A; the other cord c also passes up and over the same pulley f, and down alongside of cord c; or they may both be made of one piece. By these means the curtain or shade may be raised or lowered in a very simple manner. B are the two cords which branch 0E into four other cords, g g g gm', which pass upward over center pulleys Il h, and down over pulleys t' l, (see Fig. 3,) and are attached -loop thus formed. f
By this improvement the slats are better held together by pin l and the cords or threads k, as above described, than by any other device. Also, by the arrangement of the cords and substituting pulleys for the ordinary eyes used, the slats are better raised or lowered, and the vcords preserved longer. Also, one side of the slats can be raised alone and hung in a festoon, if desired.
Claims.
I claim- 1. The arrangement and use of the pulleys e f h fl, to operate in combination 4with the cords B B, g g, c c, and b b, as and for the purpose described.
2. The above arrangement of the cords and pulleys, in combination with the small cords k k fastened by the pin l to the slatsl a, byY
which means the blinds are raised and lowered, or shut or opened, as hereinbefore specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM POTTER, JR. Witnesses:
J. R. BRAKE, WM. J. PEYTON.
