` YORK, iv. Y.
Assieivoia 'ro HARRY i3; KRUGER., for NEW 'iinvnia'rrsmo on DISPLAY Device.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, JULIEN S'rnANDnns, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of New York, county of Kings, in the State of New York, have invented certain lng T Display Devices,rof which the following is a specification.
rihe present invention relates to advertis` ing or display devices, and particularly such devices to be exhibited in connection with the articles advertised. An ob]ect of the invention is to. provide Asuch a device which may be combined with the article' to be displayed in a manner as to'be attractive and to effectually display the same. Another object is to provide such a device which may be formed from a single` piece of mater rial without pasting, if desired, will lie flat when not in use, may be quickly set up, and will remain rigidly supported when set up. A further object is to provide ,a display device which, when combined with the article to be displayed, will give the picture effect of a group of articlesv in proper perspective and relief. lt is also proposed with the present device to enable theV article to be first placed in position independently of they display device, andgthereupoii place the device in display relation therewith.
lilith these and other ob]ects in view, an
embodiment of my invention is shownin the accompanying drawing/sand this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully 1 described with reference thereto and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims. 1
ln the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1l is a perspective view showing one embodiment of my invention` combined with an article to bedisplayed;
Fig. 2 is a `plan view vof the device in llat position and blanlred out;
Fig.- 3 is a sectional view taken along the line B 'of Fig. 2; and
Fig. d is an end view of the device in the set up position shown vin Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings. I
Referring to the drawings, the display device formed according to the present embodiment of my invention is formed from a single piece of material, preferably card Specification of Letters Patent.
board, and comprises an upper display panel 10 and a .lower -display panel 11, the said panels being suitably scored or otherwise Patented Aug. 9, 1921.

liingedly formed at their junction 12. The
outline of the panel 10 at one of its side edges is preferably such as to conform to the articles displayed therein, thus adding Vto the realistic visual effect, Also it is preferably of a size' to contain suitable advertising phrases descriptive of the articles displayed. The lower edge of the panel 11 is preferably straight and the pan-elis substantially wider Y than the article to be' displayed.
An opening 13 is provided in the panelll adjacent the .panel 1.0 and a portion '14 of the said panel 10 projects from one en d of the opening and forms in effect a leg. i
ln .display position, the panel 10 is `disposed in a perpendicularl position, the leg 14 resting upon the supporting rsurface and the panel 11 Ais inclined forwardly and downf wardly from the-.said panel 10, its lo-wer straight edge resting upon the supporting' surface. lt is to be noted thaty the main panel 1() and the tongue or extension 14 therefroin'-respectively engage against the rear side of the article 15 above and below the hinge 12. Thus it will be apparent that the mai-n panel will be at all times. maintained in its erect or perpendicular position rand its angular deflection in either directionv by movement at the hinge 12 is effectively obviated. l The `article to be displayed in the present instance, a can 15 of rectangular cross section, is placed in the opening 13 and the display device is thereby rigidly suppo-rted in display position, the opening being of. a
shape conforming to the kdiagonal cross section of the can at the plane intersected by the panel 11 in its display position, In this manner thel device lits the article snuglyA and the panel 10 is held perpendicularly and in `engagement with the article.
The panel 11 affords a -space for suitable advertising matter and, by reason of its inclinatiomthis-may be easily read.
The device, it will be seen, is simple in construction, may be readily set up and re-- moved from the article to be displayed, and
play.
have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of my provides a very attractive and effective dis invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof as detined in the appended claims.
l claim:
l. A display device comprising a main panel and a secondary panel having a horizontal hinge connection along one of its edges to said main panel, said secondary panel being provided with an article receiving opening extending from one side of the main panel to a point in spaced relation to the tree longitudinal edge ot the secondary panel, said device adapted i'or arrangement upon a supporting surface with the main panel vertically disposed and the secondary panel extending forwardly and downwardly at an inclination from the main panel and resting at its tree edge upon the supporting surface, the device being retained in display position by the article positioned in the opening oit' the secondary panel and said main panel having parts contacting with the article above and below the horizontal hinge line connecting thepanelsto prevent hinging movement ot the main panel in either direction with respect to the secondary panel,
2. A display device comprising a one piece structure having a main panel, and a secondary panel having an opening therein to receive an article which rests upon a supporting surface, and the main panel having means engaging the supporting surface to sustain the panel in erect position, said display device being applicable to or removable from its associated position with relation to the article without disturbing the position of the article relative to the support.
3. A display device comprising a vertical main panel and a secondary panel inclined to the vertical main panel, and connected with the vertical main panel at its bottom, having an opening therein to receive an article which rests upon the supporting surface, and the main panel having means coacting with the article to prevent lateral movement of the main panel in a direction away `trom the article and sustain the panel iii-erect position, the connection of the main and secondary panels being below the top of the article in the opening.
4. A displaydevice comprising a vertical main panel and a relatively movable secondary panel having an opening therein, and inclined to the vertical main panel, and connected therewith at its bottom, the 'opening being adapted to receive an article which rests upon a supporting surface, and the sustain the respective panels in their'display position, the connection of the main and secondary panels being below the top of the article in the opening.
5. A display device comprising angularly related relatively movable panels, 'one of said panels having an opening therein through which an article is adapted to be placed to rest directly upon a suitable support, the other panel having means to engage the support and position the iirst named panel with said opening in spaced relation to the support whereby the display device is sustained in its display position relative to the support, the connection of the main and secondary panels being below the top of the article in the opening. l
6. A display device comprising angularly related, hingedly connected panels, one ot said panels having an opening therein through which an article is adapted to be placed to rest directly upon a suitable support, the other panel having means to engage the support and position the first named panel with said opening in spaced relation to the support, and the second named panel contacting with the article whereby the device is sustained in its display position relative to the support.
7. A display device comprising angularly related, hingedly connected panels, one of said panels having an opening therein through which an article is adapted to be placed to rest directly upon a suitable support, the other panel having means to engage the supportand position the first named panel with said opening in spaced relation to the support, and the second named panel contacting with the article at points above and below said opening whereby the device is sustained in its display position relative to the support.
8. A display device comprising a pair of hingedly connected panels adapted to be arranged in angular relation to each other, one ot the panels having an article receiving opening therein, the other of said panels being adapted to engage the article above and below said opening whereby the latter panel in sustained in a substantially perpendicular position.
ln testimony that l claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name.
JULIEN STRANDERS.
