To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BERGMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blade-Holders,
of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of my specification.
My invention relates to a holder more especially intended for properly clamping and holding the blades of the knife or sections of the sickle of a reaper or mowing machine, during the operation of sharpen: ing or grinding, which is usually accomplished with a grind-stone mounted to revolve.
The object of my invention is to provide a construction whereby the knife blade or sickle section will be rigidly clamped in place in order to present the knife-edge at the proper angle to the grind-stone or sharpening element; the holder being adjustable so as to provide the proper bevel or edge to the knife-blade and when such adjustment has been accomplished, the operator will be enabled to give all similar knifeblades or sickle sections the same and proper bevel or edge; thus causing the bevel or edge to be uniform, not only throughout the entire edge, but also on the similar side or edge of all corresponding blades or sicklesections, because of the guiding means or nature of the holder. The invention contemplates a construction wherein the knifeblades or sickle-sections may be quickly and firmly clamped into place; at the same time enabling the holder to be adjusted so as to present. the other edge of the respective knife-blades to the rotating stone or grinder; the objects and advantages of my invention being more readily comprehended from the following detailed description of the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved holder provided with a knife-blade [or sickle-section, shown applied to a section of a grind-s one- Specifieation of Letters Patent.

The knife-blade holder, as disclosed, is more especially intended for holding the respective knife-blades or sickle-sections after the same have been removed from the supporting rod or knife-bar of the sickle; the holder being especially adapted for holding the knife-blades or sickle-sections described in a co-pending application, for an improved sickle, filed by me.
In the particular exemplification of the invention as disclosed in the drawing, it comprises the main plate 10 on which the knife-blade or sickle-section 11 rests; and this main plate 10 is provided with a yoke 12 disposed transversely over the top of said'main plate 10. The rear end of the main plate 10 is shown provided with a pair of apertures or holes-13 arranged adjacent opposite sides of the plate 10. The holes 13 are adapted to receive a pin or bolt 14 for securing the end of a blade or sickle-section holding member 15 in place. The blade-holding member 15 is normally adapted to rest on the main plate 10 and be disposed lengthwisethereof through the yoke 12; while the latter is provided with suitable means, as for. example the setscrews or bolts 16-, adapted to screw down onto the holding member 15 and firmly clamp the same in its adjusted position, namely with the forward end of the holding member 15 swung diagonally toward the opposite side of the plate 10 from the side to which the rear end of the holding member is secured by bolt 14; see Fig. 2. The holding member 15, in order to adapt it to the particular type of sickle-section or knifeblade disclosed in my copelldillg application .or secured to what may be termed the lower side of the knife-blade or sickle-section and indicated at 18. With thechannel of the knife-blade inserted into the groove or channel in holding member 15, the upper or beveled side of the section or knife-blade will be presented downwardly as shown in Fig. 1, permitting it, or'rather one of its beveled edges to be brought into contact with the perimeter or grinding surface of a grinder or stone 19. a
The plate 10 and yoke 12 are of such width and the holding member 15 and the boltreceiving apertures 13 are socorrelated, that when the holding member 15 is swung at its forward or blade holding end to the opposite side of the plate 10 from that towhich the rear end of the holder is secured, the holding member 15 will be disposed at an angle to the longitudinal center line of plate 10, corresponding with the angle on which the knife-blades or sickle-sections 11 are cut; so thatwhen the knife-blade or section 11 is properly put into place in the holder mem ber 15, one of the sides of the knife-blade or section will be arranged at an acute angle to the holding member 15, and therefore arranged'parallel with the main plate 10, see
Fig.2, sons to compel the oaerator to uniformly present one of the nife-edges or sides of the blade or sickle-section to the grinder or stone 19, and cause a uniform grinding and sharpening of the cutting edges of the respective knife-blades.
In order that the knife-blade or section may be so presented to the grinder or stone 19 asto grind or sharpen the desired portion of the blade or section, 1 provide a guide which comprises-the bar or member 20; the outer end whereof is formed or pro vided with a head adapted to receive a roller 21 rotatably mounted and adapted to bear against the side of the grinder or stone 19, in the manner shown in'Figs. 1 and 2,
during the grinding or sharpening operation. The bar 20' is formed to extend into the channel or groove 17 of the holder member 15; or, in the particular exemplification, where the blade or sickle-section 11 is formed with the loop or channel 18, the bar 20 is intended to slide through the loop or channel 18 of the respective blades orsections, as shown in Fig. 3. To adjust the 1 guide so as to present the roller 21 at varying distances removed from the forward end of holding member 15, I show the bar 20 provided on its u per side with a slotted plate or fork 22; t e slotted plate 22 being secured to the outer end of the bar 20 in any suitable manner, as for example by the rivet 23, while the rearwardly disposed portion of thereof, is arranged in spaced relation above the bar 20, a distance commensurate with the thickness of the holdingmember 15. The yoke 12 is shown preferably provided with a pair of setgs'crews or bolts 16, spaced apart'that at least one'of the set-screws or bolts 16will firmly engage with the top of the holding member 15 when the holding member 15 has been swung into either one of the two diagonal positions previously described; that is with the forward end of the holding member 15 swung toward either side of the composite blade-holder; the proper set-screw 16 being then screwed down into I firm clamping relation with the holder 15 and preventing any lateral movement of the forward end thereof. I The main plate 10, adjacent what may be termed the rear end thereof, is provided with a pivoted roller-holding bracket 25, pivoted at 26 so as to swingin a direction lengthwise of the holder; withthe lower or free end of the bracket 25 provided with a roller 27 which is adapted to engage with the periphery or grinding surface of the stone 19, to determine the proper angularity or positioning of the holder relative to the grindstone 19. Inv order topermit the roller-holding bracket 25 tobe moved so as to regulate the relation or angularity of the forward end of the holder (and therefore of the blade) relative to the grinding surface or periphery of thestone 19, I provide a slotted arm 28 pivoted at 29 to the bottom of the plate 10, as shown in Fig.1, The arm 28 is preferably made arcuate as shown and provided with an arcuate slot 30 which is adapted to receive the finger operated screw rod 31, of a length sufficient to extend through the two apertured lobes 32 formed on the pivoted bracket 25 and thereforei'also to extend through the arcuate slot'80 of swinging arm 28. The bracket 25 is; provided centrally with an elongated opening as shown at 33 for the passage of the arm 28, see Fig. 2, thus enabling the bracket 25 with roller 27 to be swung toward and awayfrom the forward end of the hol'der'and therefore in a direction somewhat lengthwise of the arm 28. The sorew rod 31 is preferably formed at one end so as to enable the same to be 0p erated by hand; while the opposite end is adapted to receive an ordinary nut 34:, which will be prevented from turning by the bracket 25 and will be brought into firm relation with the adjacent apertured lobe 32 on bracket 25 when the screw-rod has been turned so as to effect clamping relation. The screw-rod 31 is preferably provided with collars 35 and 36 loosely mounted on the screwrod andarranged on opposite sides of the swinging arm 28 and adapted to bear against the adjacent apertured lobe 32. The collar 36 is preferably provided with a reduced eX- tension adapted to pass through the aperture in the adjacent lobe 32 and slightly beyond so as to be engagedby a third collar or ferrule 37 disposed on the screw-r0d adjacent to the finger grasping end thereof. With this construction it is evident that when the screw-rod is rotated to screw toward the'nut end thereof, the collar or ferrule 37 will be forced into frictional contact with the extended portion of collar 36 and cause the opposite end of the collar 36 to be forced into frictional relation with arm 28, with the result that the swinging arm 28 will be firmly clamped between the two collars 35 and 36 and thus maintain the bracket 25 with roller 27 in such adjusted position, that when the roller 27 is placed against the periphery or grinding surface of stone 19, the forward end of the holder will be so disposed or related to the grinding surface of the stone, adjacent the upper side thereof, that the blade in theholder will be properly presented for the desired bevel during the rotation of the stone or sharpening element. As my improved holder is especially intended for use in connection with sickle-sections or knife-blades of the class hereinbefore referred to,.it will be essential to provide a holder which is adapted to present both sharpened or beveled edges of the triangulated blade to the grinding element. After all of the blades to be sharpened have been placed in the holder with one beveled edge presented forwardly, as a result of the forward end of the holding member 15 being swung toward one side of the composite holder, the holding member 15 is then arranged so as to move the forward or bladeholding end thereof toward the opposite side of the holder and thus permit the blades to be so inserted as to present the other edge properly to the grinder element or stone 19;
after which the proper set-screw 16 is end of the sickle, are usually of equal thickness and consist of a single member or plate, while the inner end sections or blades are generallyw provided on the upper surface parallel, throughout its length, with the plate 10. When the inner end sections or blades are inserted into place, the reinforcing plate of these blades will cause the forward end of the holding member 15 to be slightly elevated. In order that the proper angle may be maintained and therefore the proper bevel given to all of the knife-blades or sections, I provide the spacing plate 39. This plate 39 is partially slotted to fit about the bolt 14, see Figs. 2 and 3, while the remainder of the plate is'bent upwardly and arranged to fit about the rear end of the holding member 15 so as to enable the proper insertion of the plate 39 into place; the plate 39 being substantially equal in thickness to the thickness of the reinforcing plates which are usually riveted on the upper surface of the inner end sections or blades of-the knife or sickle. With the spacing plate 39 put into place as shown in the figures, the rear end of the holding member 15 will be caused to be held in the same spaced relation with the main plate or body 10 as the forward end and thus insure the proper presentation of the beveled edges of the respective knifeblades or sections to the grinder or stone 19. As is evident from the construction shown, after the spacing member 39 has been inserted into place, the butterfly nut on bolt 14 may be turned so as to draw the bolt and nut' into firm clamping relation with the 7 plate 10 and holding member 15, respectively, thus firmly clamping the spacing member 39 against accidental removal.
While my improved holder is more espeoi ally adapted to the sickle-sections or knife blades herein described,to wit the type disclosed in the copending application referred to, it is apparent that the holder is adapted to hold any. removable type of knife-blade or sickle-section intended to be provided with a beveled cutting edgeof the nature usually given to the blades or sections of a reaper or mowing machine sickle.
After the holder has been adjusted so as to present one 'of the beveled edges forwardly, namely with the beveled edge running parallel with the end of the main plate 10, and the swinging bracket 25 has been clamped into place by the mechanism previously described so as to adapt the holder to the diameter of the grinder or stone, the
operator positions the holder, with the inserted knife-blade in the manner shown in Fig. l; placing roller 27 into contact with the grinding surface or periphery of the stone, while the roller 21 is brought into contact with the flat side of the stone. The positioning of the holder as described,causes the blade to be so presented to the grinder or stone that the beveled or cutting edge will be uniformly ground or; sharpened throughout the entire beveled edge thereof; and every successively inserted blade will likewise be given the proper and similar beveljor edge. r

comprising a body portion, bladeeholding and clamping means laterally adjustable and adapted to be pivotally secured at one end thereof on the body portion so as to permit the forward end to swing transversely of said body portion and thereby separately present the'opposite edges of a triangulated blade to-the grinding surface of a grinder or stone, means whereby said first means will be held in its adjusted position, and roller carrying means, adjustably secured to said body portion, adapted tocontact with the rinder or stone and thereby control the [bevel to be produced by the grinder or stoneand in a diagonal manner, a roller-carrying bracket pivotally secured to said body portionso as to permit the roller to engage with the grinding surface or periphery of a i grinder'or' stone when the holder is placed in. blade sharpening position, and means whereby the angularity of said roller-holding bracket to the body-portion may be regulated and the position of the knife-edge relative to the grinder or stone determined.

A holder of the class'described, comprising a body portion, a blade-holding if member adkjustably mounted-on said body portion so as to be moved into a diagonal position thereon,I-Ineans whereby the positi'on of said blade-holder may be controlled, a rollerecarrying bracket pivotally secured to the body portion .at the rear end thereof so as to swingtoward 'or away from the forward send "of said roller, while theroll'er- 'holdingend of said bracket is adapted to come into contact with the grinding surface or periphery of a grinder or stone, and means whereby the positioning of the rollerholdingfiend 'of said bracket relativeto the forward *end -of the holdermay be controlled.

A holderofthe class described, comprising a body-portion, a blade-holding member adjustably' mounted lengthwise on said body-portion and adapted to be moved into a diagonal position 'on'said body-portion, means whereby J the member may be held in its "a-dj usted position, blade-clamping means carriedby the forward end of said member, an oscillatingly; mounted member on said body-portion.provided at its free end with an anti-friction member adapted to position and the angularity o-f the forward end of the blade-holding member relative to the grinding surface of the stone is deter- -mined,;and adjustablemeans carried by said blade-holding member s-adapted to engage with the side of the grind-stone whereby 'movement of the holder transversely of the grind-stone is limited and-the length of the knife-edge to be ground or sharpcned'is determined. I

A blade holder of-the class described, comprising a body portion, .a channeled blade-holding member adjustably secured to iengage" with the surface of the revolving grinder or stone whereby the blades are ground or sharpened, means whereby-the i'oscillatingly mounted member is locked in said body portion so as tobe disposed in a diagonal manner thereon, means whereby the blade may be clamped in said member so as to present its knife-edge in a direction parallelwith' the front end of said'body'portion, a guide member adjustably secured to secured in position and the angularity of said holding member by said means whereby the forward end of the holder relative to the 10 movelment of the holder transverselyl of the grind-stone regulated.
