Description

` 41. BYRNES.
Wardrobe Bedsteads- No. 138,610. Patented May 6,1873.
` Y INVENTDFL UNITED STATES JAMES BYRNES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRDRBE-BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,610, dated May 6, 1873; application filed February 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMEs BYRNEs, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined Folding Wardrobe and Folding Bedstead, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure l represents a front elevation of a combined folding wardrobe and folding bedstead when folded 5 Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same, and Fig. 3 a like view of the folding-bedstead attachment unfolded.A
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention relates to that class of ward-` robes which are rendered capable of being compactly folded, so that they may be cheaply and conveniently shipped from one place to another; and it consists in certain novel features relating to the construction of the folding bedstead, and to the means employed for the purpose of combining one or more of the same with wardrobes of this class.
In the drawing, all above the line x represents a folding wardrobe of the class above referred to. The compartment below the line .fr has heretofore generally been occupied by drawers. Instead of providing the wardrobe with drawers arranged near the bottom, I use this part of the wardrobe for the purpose of attaching to it one or more folding bedsteads, constructed and arranged in the manner hereinafter described. When only one bedstead is thus combined with the wardrobe, one or more short drawers may also be arranged in this part of the wardrobe, as represented in Fig. 1.
A represents the lower part of the wardrobe. B is a front piece hinged to the bottom of the wardrobe, so as to occupy a vertical position when folded, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and so as to be capable of being folded outward and occupying a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 3. I deem it best to finish the outer face of the part B., so that, when folded, it will give a finished appearance to the lower part of the wardrobe, as shown. C C are rails attached to the part B near the ends of the latter, and so that they will lap the inner face of the ends of the wardrobe when the said part is folded, as shown in Fig. 2. D D are also rails hinged to the end of the rails C C, and capable of being folded against the latter, as shown in Fig. 2. E is a bottom piece attached to the rails D D, so that a small space will exist between it and the part B, as shown at d, Fig. -3 but this space is not essential, as will hereafter appear. F F are arms pivoted to the rails D D, and Fl is a cross-piece attached to the arms F F. G is also a crosspiece arranged to support the piece F when the latter is arranged in the position shown in Fig. 3; and when so arranged the piece F constitutes a support for the bolster. H is a piece or bar hinged to the part B, and h h are legs attached to the part H', so as to form a support for the bed-bottom, as shown in Fig. 3. The bar H and its legs are capable of being folded into the position shown in Fig. 2; and when the legs are in a position to support the bed-bottom, the bar H fills, or nearly fills, the space between the part B and the` part E, as shown in Fig. 2. The part H, however, and its legs may be dispensed with, and the cleats I I employed instead, as shown in Fig. 3in which case there need be no space d between the parts C and D. J is a lid hinged to the wardrobe, and j j are sliding pins arranged to support the lid J when the latter is unfolded, as represented by the dotted lines shown in Fig. 3. The lid J, when unfolded, may be conveniently used as a writingdesk.
A more particular description of a porta- PATENT OFFICE.
shown and employed, for the purpose of rendering the Wardrobe capable of being folded 5 but Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
In e combined folding Wardrobe and fold ing bedstead, the piece B hinged to the Wardrobe, in combination with the folding piece E, a folding bolster, rails, or side pieces, C and D, and suitable legs or supports, all substantially as specified.
