Description

A.- KNAUS.
ARTICLE OF JEWELRY- APPLICATION FILED JULY 23,1920.
Patented July 26, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST KNAUS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ARTICLE or JEWELRY.
jewelry such as a bar, brooch, shawl or lace pin, or the like, having a center 0rv setting member composed of a frame having a jewel or ornament thereon whereby said frame with its jewel or ornament remaining there on as a fixture may be removed and applied interchangeably to other articles of jewelry such as a lavalliere, a pendant, a stick pin, etc. provision being made for securing said center member to either article so as to be retained securely in position, the same jewel or ornament with its frame thus being applicable to either of the other articles of jewelry. 7 I
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a face view of a bar or bar pin, an article of jewelry embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a rear or reverse view thereof.
Fig. 3 represent a rear view of the bar with the center embodying my invention.
Fig. 4 represents a rear elevation of the center.
Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section of a portion on line 5-5 Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 6 represents a transverse section on line 66 Fig. 5. I
Fig. 7 represents a rear view of a stick pin embodying my invention.
Fig. 8 represents a face view of a lavalliere embodying my invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
1 designates what is known as a bar or bar pin formed of a suitably shaped plate of metal with a center or setting 2 thereon, the latter comprising a frame with a jewel or jewels or ornaments thereon as a fixture thereof, as well known in the art, said frame 1920. Serial 1a. 393,510.
having therein the opening 3 in whose wall 1,.on opposite sides thereof are the recesses 5 and 6. On the inner or underside of the frame of the center or setting is the flange 7 which is adapted to enter the opening 3 and to fit against the wall 4' whereby turncenter or setting is prevented.
Projecting angularly outwardly from one side of said flange is the stud 8 which is adapted to enter the recess 5. On the side of said flange opposite to said stud is the bolt 9 which is adapted to enter the adjacent recess 6, said bolt being slidingly contained in the barrel 10, which is secured to the underside of the frame of the center 2 and having therein the spring ll which isadapted to force said bolt into said recess 6'and retain it therein.
ing of said frame'and consequently of the- Specification of Letters Patent; i Patented J 1y 26", 1921 Application filed July 23, i
Theframe of the center has on itscircumference the outturned rim 12 whichis adapted to be seated on the portion of the pin 1 around the wall of the opening 3, thus sustaining the center steadily on the bar and.
limiting its extent of entrance into said opening, it being seen that when the center is positioned and the stud 8 occupies the recess 5, and the bolt 9 occupies the recess 6, the center will be held firmly connected with the pin.
The inner end of the bolt is provided with the knob or head 13 whereby the bolt may be conveniently drawn in preparatory to applying the center in position, it being seen that the under portion of the center is presented to the opening 3 and partially entered therein and so manipulated that the stud 8 is inserted in the recess 5. Then the bolt 9 is drawn in or back and the center inserted to full extent in the opening 3 when the bolt islet go and its nose or point portion enters the recess 6 and thus the center is connected at both of its ends with the bar. 7
In order to remove the center from the bar, the bolt is drawn in or back whereby it leaves the recess 6 when the center may be partially raised and tilted and manipulated to withdraw the stud 8 from the recess 5 when the center is disconnected from the bar and may be entirely removed from the opening 3 and consequently from the bar.
14 designates a lavalliere, and 15 designates a stick pin which are equipped similarly to the barl whereby the center as removed from the latter may be fitted to the plate or pendant of the lavalliere 'or' to the the center is thus interchangeable'for different articles of jewelry and so may be' worn with either while being held removably in position on the respective article.
other ornaments may be employed, and it may be enameled or otherwise faced as. customary in the class 7 "Attention is directed to the fact that the jewel or ornament on the frame thereof is not designed to be removed from the same but remains a fixture thereof and so the frame with its ewel or ornament is appllca 'ble to the various articles of jewelry, and
thus thesame jewel or ornament may, render services on each of said articles, each being provided w th a registering opening 3 for the frame of the center, and the wall of said opening is equipped with therecesses 5 and 6 therein for the occupation of the angularly extending stud 8 and the bolt 9, therein to hold, the frame of the same center in position in either of the articles to which it is interchangeably applied.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is V v i 1. In an article of jewelry of the character stated, a plate having therein an opening, and recesses in the wall thereof, and an inconsisting of members on said frame adapted 5 to pass through said opening and enter said recesses. V The center is shown as set with ewels, but I 2. An article of jewelry consisting of a plate having therein an opening and a re movable'center composed of a frame and an ornament fixed thereto, said center having onits inner side a flange adaptedto occupy said opening, the'wall of the latter having therein recesses, and means extending from said flange adapted to pass through said opening and enter said recesses and thereby retain the center removably in position on said plate. i
3. An article of jewelry of the character stated having a center which is removably mounted on a seating portion thereof, recesses in said portion, and a stud and a spring pressed boltrespectivelyon said center, said bolt and stud being adapted to enter said recesses and thereby retain the center steadily and firmly in place, and-adapted to permit, the convenient removal of the center from said articl'e. j 1
