Description

L. J. LANE.
PLUG BAIT.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE H. 1921.
1,385,627. I Patented Julys, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEAVIT'I J. LANE, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS (10., OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
PLUG-BAIT.
Patented July 26, 1921.
Application filed June 14, 1921. Serial No. 477,362.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEAVITT J. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plug-Baits; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and'represent in- Figure 1, a view in side elevation of a plug-bait produced in accordance with my improved method.
Fig. 2, a plan view thereof. I
Fig. 3, a plan View thereof, showing one side finished and one left blank.
Fig. 4, a view thereof in transverse section on the line 4-4: of Fig. 3.
My invention relates to an improved method of finishing plug-bait for casting, the object being to produce at a greatly reduced cost for manufacture, plug-bait of superior durability and enhanced attractiveness to the angler and t0 the fish.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a method of finishing plug-bait, characterized by applying the design by decalcomania.
My invention further consists in a method comprising certain steps as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
'gIn carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I take a wooden plug 5, of customary cigar or spindle shape, and first coat it with any suitable filler which will fill the pores of the wood and leave a smooth surface. When the filler is thoroughly dry, the plug is given a light coat of a slow-drying, colorless decalcomania varnish, which is allowed to nearly dry. Then, when the varnish is still tacky, a strip 6 of decalcomania embodying the proper design in colors, is applied longitudinally to either side of the bait, the two strips meeting along the center of the back line of the plug and extending downwardly, say from one-half to twothirds over the sides thereof. The decalcomania varnish is then allowed to become completel dry, after which the strips (5 are soaked o in water. The plug is then allowed to dry, and the belly portion of the plug and the nose thereof are colored accordlng to any convenient method by spraymg or painting, or in some other convenient manner. The entireplug is now completed by being given one or more coats of a waterproof lacquer and allowed to thoroughly ait thus produced in accordance with my invention has a. satiny naturalness of appearance which makes it very effective in use, as well as pleasing to the angler.
After the finishing process has been completed, the plug is provided with the approprlate accessories, such as hooks 7, vanes 8, attachment-loop 9, and glass eyes 10.
If desired, baits produced in accordance with my lmproved method may have spinners attached to them and may be further rendered attractive by a variety of wellknown devices for attracting attention.
I claim:
1. A method of finishing plug-bait for castmg, consisting in treating the surface of a plug with a filler and allowing the same to dry, then treating the filled surface of the plug with decalcomania varnish, then, before the said varnish is completely'dry, applying decalcomania strips to the plug, then removing the decalcomania strips, then finishing the nose and belly of the plug, then applying waterproof varnish over the entire surface of the plug, and finally applying trimmings to the plug.
2. method of finishing plug-bait for casting, consisting in treating the surface of a plug with a filler and allowing the same to dry, then treating the filled surface of the plug with decalcomania varnish, then, before the said varnish is completely dry, applying decalcomania strips longitudinally to the plug on either side of the longitudinal center thereof, then allowing the varnish to completely dry, then soaking off the decalcomania strips, then finishing the nose and belly of the plug, then applymg waterproo varnish over the entire surface of the plug, and, finally, applying trimmings to the plug.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEAVITT J. LANE.
