Description

T. T. MARTIN. CALENDAR.
APPLICATION FILED DEC- 30, 1920- 1,385,140, Patented July 19, 1921. .1. 3022 UNITED STATES THOMAS '1. MARTIN, 0F MOBILE, ALABAMA.
CALENDAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1921.
Application filed December 30, 1920. Serial No. 434,069.
To all whom it may coaoem: 7
Be it known that I, THOMAS T. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calendars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to calendars and. has for its object the provision of a simple and inexpensive calendar which may be readily manipulated to change the calendar displayed to correspond with the current month and also to change advertisements displayed upon the face of the calendar.
The invention is illustrated in the accomanying drawings and will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a calendar embodying my present improvements;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same:
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional elevation of a portion of the rear side of the calendar.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a frame which may be of any desired construction and will preferably be a sheet of stout cardboard, indicated at 1, having a plurality of openings 2 formed there-through. A suspension device 3 of any preferred form will be provided at the upper end of the frame so that the calendar may be hung upon awall or otherwise displayed. Upon the back of the frame or sheet 1, I provide vertical cleats l constituting guides for a backing strip or sheet 5 and the lower ends of these cleats are closed, as shown at 6, to be engaged by shoulders 7 formed on the edges of the backing sheet whereby the said sheet will be supported and prevented from dropping from the frame, it being under stood, of course, that the upper ends of the cleats are open to facilitate the lnsertion of the backing sheet. This backing sheet may be of thin cardboard or any other light inexpensive material having sufficient stiffness to properly support the calendar display sheet and hold the same smooth across the rear sides of the openings 2 in the frame.
In the present drawmg, I have illustrated four openings 2 through the frame, the uppermost opening being intended for the display of an advertisement which may be suitable to the season defined by the dates displayed through the lower openings and it Wlll be understood that, while the illustrated form of the invention shows the dates for three months exposed, it is entirely within the range of the invention to display a greater number of months or a lesser number. A slot 8 is formed in the frame between the uppermost opening 2 and the opening lmmediately below it and upon the faceof the frame over the said slot is a housing 9. The calendar or display sheet 10 is preferably a strip of paper furnished in a roll, as lndlcated at 11, which may be conveniently housed within the casing 9 with one end inserted through the slot 8, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. From the slot 8, the strip 10 is carried upwardly across the rear side of the uppermost opening 2 and then doubled upon itself around a guide or tension rod 12 disposed upon the back of the frame 1 within a recess 1.3 provided therefor. From the guide or tension rod 12, the strip 10 depends through the space between the back of the frame and the backing sheet 5 to the lower end of the frame so as to be visible through the lower openings 2, as clearly shown in 1 1g. 2 and as will be readily understood. The monthly dates are printed upon one face of the strip 1.0, while upon the opposite face of said strip advertisements: are printed and it will be readily seen that when the strip is carried upwardly past the top opening 2 an advertisement will be displayed through said opening and the doubling of the strip upon itself around the tension rod 12 causes its reverse side to become its obverse and, therefore, display the monthly dates through the lower openings 2. As each month expires the strip may be drawn downwardly so that that portion thereof having printed thereon the dates for the expired month may be removed, and this shifting of the strip will obviously cause an additional length thereof to unwind from the roll 11 and bring another advertisement into view through the top opening 2. To facilitate the separation of so much of the strip as has become obsolete, a blade 14 is secured across the rear face of the frame 1 at the lower end thereof whereby the withdrawn portion of the strip may be severed therefrom in an obvious manner.
The frame 1 may have its face ornamented in any desired manner and a thermometer, a barometer, or other relevant dethe used vice may be afiixed thereto, ifdesired. The device is exceedingly simple and may be easily manipulated to display the correct dates of the current month and it may be used indefinitely inasmuch as it is necessary merely to renew the display strip at the end of a year or a series of years for which strip was provided. The backing strip may be easily removed by merely withdrawing it through the upper ends of the cleats or guides 4 and the slot 8 and tension rod 12 will thereby become accessible so that the proper threading of the new strip into place may be readily accomplished.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a calendar, the combination with a frame sheet having a plurality of display openings therein and a slot between two of the openings, a display strip bearing a11- nouncements upon both its faces, means for supporting an inactive portion of said strip upon the frame sheet, and means whereby said strip may be carried through said slot and past the display openings and portions of its opposite faces viewed through said openings.
2. A calendar comprising a frame sheet having a plurality of display openings therein, a display strip bearing announcements upon its opposite faces, means for supporting an inactive portion of said strip upon the frame sheet between two of said openings, means whereby the strip may be carried past all the openings and portions of its opposite faces viewed through the respective openings, and tension means upon the frame sheet engaged by the display strip, said tension means causing the opposite faces of the strip to be brought into display position.
3. In a calendar, the combination of a frame having a plurality of display openings therein and having a slot formed therethrough between two of said openings, means for supporting a rolled portion of a display strip upon one side of the frame over the said slot, a display strip having its inactive portion rolled and housed within said supporting means with its active portion extending throughthe said slot, and a tension device upon the frame above the uppermost opening, the display strip having announcements upon both faces and being extended from the slot up to and over said tension device and then from said tension device to the lower end of the frame.
4:. In a calendar, the combination of a frame having a plurality of display openings therein, guides on the rear side of the opening having closed lower ends, a display strip having announcements on both its faces, means whereby said strip may be sup ported upon the frame with portions tending across the openings therein to permit portions of its opposite faces to be viewed through the openings, a backing sheet fitted in the guides and provided at its lower ends with shoulders engaging the closed lower ends of the guides whereby to be supported, said backing sheet holding the display strip to the openings in the frame, and means at the lower end of the frame for severing a portion of the strip.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
