T0 allwhom'itmdy came Statejof Wisconsimhave invented certain new an d'useful' Improvements in Desks for Bookkeeping Machines, &c., of which the following is: a' specification, reference being had tothe accompanying" drawing, forming a part thereof."
This"inventlongrelatestodesks for book- F keeping machines, etci, and the object of the invention is to "improve the construction of" plate extending the length ofthe top'of the desks *in' the manner to be hereinafterfde scribed and claimed;
Referring to the drawings ivhich accom panythis specificationand form a part here-' of, which drawings illustrate an embodiment of this invention, and on which drawings the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts wherever they may appear in each of the views, Figure 1 is a vertical, transverse section of the desk on the line 1-1 on Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the desk.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numerals 1 and 2 designate end members which may be constructed in any suitable or preferred manner and which are connected in any suitable manner as, for example, by a back 3 and a bar 4 to form a rigid structure. A top 5 is pivotally connected with a pair of links at each end and the links of each pair of links are designated by the reference numerals 6 and 7. The drawings illustrate the links 7 as pivoted to the ends of the desk by pivots 8 which are located below and to the rear of the pivots 9 by which the links 6 are pivoted to the ends of the desk. In other words, the links 6 and 7 are pivoted non-concentrically to the ends of the desk in such a manner that the rear and the front edges of the top move in arcs of different circles when the top is being turned from a horizontal to a vertical position or vice versa, as is clearly shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings. This construction enables the top to be moved bodily to the rear on the latter part of its opening movement as distinguished from a circular rotation. The links 7 are provided with counterweights 10 on the opposite sides of their pivots 8 from the top 5 and these connterweights not only partly counterbalance the weight of the top 5 when it is being 'movedfrom oneposition to another but also seesaw i we. ra efi- Y Patented: duly 1 2,

formedinany suitable manner. The stop 12 isiIlustrate'd bythe drawings as a metal,
deskandthe 13 is illustrated the" drawings as a metal plate ext ending sub stfan tially thelength of the topjoffthedesk ness or play between the parts and the stop 13 on the top 5 is held in close contact with the stop 12 on the back 3 by the counterweights 10, and the stop 12 prevents the top 5 from moving forward on the steadying supports 11.
When the top 5 is moved from its closed, horizontal position to its opened, vertical position, as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings, the top rests against and is supported by the bar or stop 4:, it being understood, of course, that the counterweights 10 are not at siiificient power to lift the top from the The reference numeral 14 designates a bar or stop against which a bookkeeping machine, not shown, forexample, may. abut to position the machine properly with respect to the desk.
The use and operation of the desk will be I readily understood from the foregoing description and from an inspection of the drawings. In opening the top of the desk, the movement of the top requires but very little space so that desks may be laced compactly within a limited area. llVhen the top of the desk is closed, it affords an exceptionally firm and immovable desk surface,and when the top of the desk is opened, the top forms a vision shield to prevent. distraction or annoyance.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination in a desk of ends, a back, a movable top adapted to be moved from a substantially horizontal "positioifto a I back, a; movablegtqp adapted-to be moved g in a substantially vertical position on the cally on each end of the desk and pivoted to the top of the desk, stops ior limitingthe movements of the top of the desk, and counterba'laincet ...meehanism connected with the top in such amanner astdleavethe space between the ends substantially unobstructed."
