C. 0. FIRST.
CAR FENDER. APPLICATION FILED SEPT.30. 1920.
Patented June 28, 1921.
UNITED STATESH PATENT, OFFICE.
cAn o. Fms'r, or MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-FENDER.
Application fi1ed.$eptember 30, 1920. Serial No. 413,701.
To all to hom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, CARL O. Fins'r, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Meadville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania have invented certain, new and useful Improvements in Gar-Fenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fender devices employed upon railway cars, street cars, trolley cars, and the like, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
Another ob 'ect of the invention. is to provide a device of this character that will follow the track when the car is traveling on curves and around street corners.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily adapted without material structural change to cars of various forms and.
sizes.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a conventional street car with the improved fender applied, and partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improved fender, detached. 7
The improved fender comprises a supporting frame 10 preferably of metal of suitable strength and converging at the rear into a single rod 11, the latter having a ball 12 at its rear end.
The frame 10 is formed with spaced sides in parallel relation and with a forward portion at right angles to the sides, the for.- ward portions of the frame sides being bent downwardly as at 13 to bring the forward ends relatively near the tracks, represented at 1 1-.
Supported from the side members of the frame 10 is a transverse frame .15 having downturned ends/terminating in bearings 16 to carry flanged track engaging wheels 17, the bearings having Suitable oil reservoirs, indicated at 16.
. Attached to the frame 10 is a plurality 0 metal strips or ribs, 18, extendinglongitudinally of the frame and constituting the platform or face of the fender, the ribs followin the contour .of the framelO. a
ising from the wheel carrying frame 15 1s a tubular standard 19, and slidable in the standard is a pin or plunger 20, the latter carrying an antifriction wheel or roller 21 in its upper end adapted to engage a curved bearing plate 22 attached to the under face of the car body, a portion of the latter being represented at 23. The pin 20 is held from rotation in the standard by a pin 20 and slot 20 A spring 2 1 is disposed within the stand ard 19 and bears beneath the plunger 20 and maintains the wheel 21 yieldably in engage ment with the bearing plate 22. l Attached to the car body 23 rearwardly of Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11116 28, 1921.
its forward end, is a bracket device formed 7 ings to engage the ball 12 on theframe member 11.
Thebearings'for the ball 12 are beveled'outwardly as shown at 27' and 28, so
that the fender frame and its attachment and the car body 23 will have free play relative to each other.
. By this means the fender device is flexibly coupled to the car and will readily adapt itself to changes in grade, and the curvatures of the track, withoutwcramping.
One of the improved fender devices may be attached to the rear of the car, if required, to become effective when'the car is moving rearwardly.
The coacting members 19 and 20 with the wheel or roller 21 and spring 24, serve as shock absorbers to prevent the car from rocking abnormally. I r
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that any'modifications within the scope of the claims may be made in the construction, without departing from the pr mciple of the invention or sacrificing any of converging. to the rearv and adapted to be swinginsly attached at the c erg g per tion to a car body track engaging Wheels connected to sa1d frame, a plural ty of continuous slats connected to said frame and" extending longitudinally thereof, a standard carrying a bearing Wheel adapted to engage the under face of the car body and means, for yieldably' supporting said standard from the fram t 2. In an apparatus of the class described,
a bracket device adapted to be attachedto' a car body, a fender swingingly coupled to .said bracket, track engaging Wheels connected to said fender, a tubular standard supported by said fender, a plunger operating
