J. W. 'CLEGG.
COMBING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED ms. 12, 1920.

PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES WILLIAM CLEGG, OF OLDI-IAM, ENGLAND.
COMBING-MACHINE.
Application filed February 12, 1920. Serial No. 358,292.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WILLIAM CLEGG, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Soho Iron Works, Oldham, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combing machines of the Nasmith type, and consists of an improved arrangement for adjusting and setting the nipper knife and cushion plate relatively to the comb cylinder.
Hitherto in combing machines of the type indicated, it has been customary to arrange the setting device below the cushion plate with the adjusting screw and lock nuts carried on the rocking lever below the cross bar close to the comb cylinder, and this position has been found inconvenient and difiicult of access.
In my improved arrangement I carry the setting screw in a projection or bracket at the top of the rocking lever which position is easily accessible and enables the nipper knife and cushion plate to be readily adjusted relatively to the comb cylinder.
I illustrate iny invention in the accompanying sheet of drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation, partly sectional, showing my improved adjusting mechanism applied to the rocking lever which carries the nipper knife and cushion plate;and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
In these views, A designates the nipper knife; B the cushion plate; C the nipper arm which is fulcrumed at C on the rocking lever D and is actuated by connections from cams or equivalents in the usual way. D is the rocking shaft on which the lever D is fixed and by which it is oscillated in the usual way.
For the purposes of my invention I fix or form a bracket D at the top of the rocking lever D, and this bracket supports the head of the setting screw E, the threaded end of which passes through a lug F, formed on the cross bar or slide F,
which is adjustably secured to the rocking lever D by a screw H passing through a slot D in the rocking lever.
It will thus be seen that by slackening the screw H the cross bar F with the cushion plate B can be adjusted relatively to the comb cyhnder G by turning the setting screw E, and as the nipper knife A is pulled down by sprlngs (not shown) in the usual 'way it follows every adjustment of the cushion plate B.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a machine of the class described, the comblnatlon of a comb cylinder and a rocking lever having a nipper knife pivotally mounted thereon above said cylinder, a slide member adj ustably carried by said lever and having a cushion plate for'cooperating with said nipper knife, said rocking lever having an angularly extending portion at its upper end and a perforated laterally extending lug at one side thereof, said slide member having a rearwardly extending lug provided with a threaded perforation in alinement with the perforation of said laterally extending lug, and a headed adjusting member passing through said perforation in the laterally extending lug and threaded at its lower end to engage the threaded perforation in said rearwardly extending lug thereby to adjust the cushion plate relatively to the cylinder.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification! JAMES WILLIAM CLEGG.
