FRANK ORMOND WHITE, 0 F BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
VENTILATED UPHOLSTEBED FURNITURE.
Application filed July 12',
- is formed the reticulated back element 14;.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK ORMOND WHITE, a citiien of the United States, and resident of Belleville, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilated Upholstered Furniture, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The object of my invention is to fabricate a seat and back for furniture which will be aerated, prevent the sticking of the users clothing to the seat and the back of chairs, lounges, etc., in warm weather.
In the conventional seat, the user in hot weather, due to perspiration, becomes very uncomfortable, particularly where he is compelled to remain in one seat for any considerable length of time. An automobile driver, particularly where the limits of his bodily movements are small and where he drives for hours continually, becomes very uncomfortable in hot weather, owing to the lack 8f air circulation in and around the seat and My purpose is accomplished by providing an air space immediately under the seat and back whereby the air can pass, as well as a perforated member, as cane or leather by which the air may passfrom the air space to the person of the user.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, examples of which are described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and
F ig. 3 is a plan.
Numeral 4: lndicates a base plate and numeral 5 a seat element, held in spaced relationship by means of the supports 6; 7 designates a back plate and 8 a back element held in spaced relationship by means of the supports 9; 10 designates a spring fastened to the back plate at Hand to the base plate at 12. This spring is of the conventional form holding the back plate normally at right angles with the base plate, but permitting the back plate to be oscillated backward from its normal vertical position. In the seat element 5, isformed a reticulated seat element 13 and in the back element 8, Y
Specification 01' Letters Patent. Patented J 11119 28 1921,
1919. Serial No. 310,454.
The external end of the seat element 5 is chamfered off, as is the back element 8. The 7 seat element 5 is of smaller area than the base plate 4 and the back element 8 is of smaller area than the back plate 7. These reductions in area are made to prevent the catching of the clothing and to give the device a finished appearance. By these means, alr is permitted to circulate between the base plate 4 and the seat element 5 and pass through the reticulations in the reticulated seat element 13 to the person of the user of the seat; similarly air is permitted to circulate between the back element 8 and the back plate 7 through the reticulations in the reticulated back element 14. The supports 6 and 9 terminate at the respective reticulatedelements. These reticulated elements may be made of any resilient material, such as perforated leather stretched taut, or cane.
I claim 1. In furniture, a base plate and a seat elerigid supports, said seat element located concentric the base plate and of smaller area than said base plate, a back plate and a back element secured in concentric constant spaced relationship by means of rigid supports, said back element of smaller area than said back plate'element, said seat element and back element secured in operative relationship.
2. In a portable seat, a base plate and a seat element, said base plate and seat element secured in substantially restricted spaced relationship by means of rigid supports, said seat element located concentric the base plate and of smaller area than said base plate, a back plate and a back element secured in substantially restricted concentric constant spaced relationship by means of rigid supports, said back element of smaller area than said back plate element, said seat element and 1 back element secured in operative relationship.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PHYLLIS L. Murmur, WILLIAM I AM BAUER.
