Be it known that I, ALLni M. FREEMAN, a citizeny of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clark and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Holders, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to devices for holding lace or similar curtains, and has for its object the provision of a device including a penetrating member adapted to be inserted into the woodwork of a window sill at the underside thereof and having connected therewith a ieXible member which might be a ribbon, preferably of a color to match the curtain, or which might be a chain formed of celluloid or the like, this flexible member carrying a clip or other fastening device adapted to be engaged with the curtain, my device being designed to hold the curtain and prevent it from being blown across a window sill, with consequent soiling, in the event that the window has been left open.

An important object is the provision of a device of this character which will be inconspicuous and which will hold the curtains in natural folds and which will not give them the appearance of being pinned down.

An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, easy to apply, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a window and curtain showing my device in position,

Fig. 4 is a view of another modified form.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a window frame and B designates a curtain. In carrying out my invention I provide a curtain holding device which includes a thumb tack 10 which may be formed of metal, celluloid, or other suitable material and which carries a penetrating point 11 adapted to be pressed into the wood work at the underside of the window sill C. Formed on one side of the thumb tack 1() is a loop or ring 12 within which is engaged a flexible member 13 which inav preferably be a length of ribbon of a color matching the curtain and this ribbon carries a slide 14 by means of which its length may be varied. Connected with one end of the ribbon is a clip 15 which may be formed of metal, celluloid, or other suitable material, and in the former event it would probably be lined with felt or other material, indicated at 16. This clip is adapted to be engaged with the curtain.

In the use of the device it will be seen that the thumb tack 10 is pushed into the wood-work beneath the Sill, the clip 15 is engaged with the curtain, and the ribbon 13 adjusted by means of the slide 14 to the proper length to hold the curtain in the desired position. When the device is in use it will be apparent that the curtain will be held firmly so that it would not be blown through the window and across the sill which generally occurs when the wind is blowing and which results in soiling the curtain and giving it a bedraggled appearance.

Instead of using a ribbon as a flexible member, it is apparent that I might easily make use of a chain formed of celluloid or other material and the construction in other respects, as well as the operation and advantages, would be exactly the same.

Referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that I have provided a slight modification. In this form instead of using the clip 15 I make use of a fastener 17 similar to a glove fastener and formed with a relatively large base 18 having slots 19 whereby it may be sewed onto the curtain. Coperating with this fastener 17 is a fastener 20 which is connected with the free end of the flexible member. The operation of this form is eX- actly the same as the operation of the previously described form except that the separable fastener is provided instead of the resilient clip.

In Fig. 4l I have shown another modification. In this form the chain 21 which constitutes the flexible member has one endmost link carrying a clasp or hook 22 detachably engageable with the thumbtack 23 so that the device may be removed without removing the thumb tack.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it

is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

claim:

l. A device for holding down a curtain comprising a penetrating member designed for engagement with the sill portion of a window frame, a flexible member connected adapted for engagement beneath a window sill, a leziible member connected with said penetrating member, and a securing member carried by the other end of the flexible member and detachably engageable with the edge of the curtain.

3. A device for holding a window curtain comparatively taut to prevent blowing thereof across the sill comprising a penetrating member designed to be engaged with the underside of the window sill, an adjustable'lexible member connected with said penetrating member, and a clip carried by the flexible member and detachably engageable with the edge oit' the curtain.V
