ORCHARD-LADDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1921.
Application filed October 21, 1919, Serial No. 332,158. Renewed Januar *3, 1921. Serial No. @35533.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it Known that I, LARKIN Blur-12s, a citizen of the United States residing Lake City, in the county of Mbdoc and tate of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orchard-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ladders especially adapted for use in picking fruit from trees.
An important object of this invention is'to provide a ladder of the class described having means whereby the same may be quiclrly adjusted to various elevations for picking fruit from trees without the necessity of climbing the tree.
A "further object of the invention is to provide an orchard ladder which may be positioned for use without being brought into engagement with the tree and marring the same.
A further object oi the invention is to provide an orchard ladder havingnovel supporting means whereby the same may be employed on the sides of hills, etc.
A further object of the invention is to provide an orchard ladder which may be readily and conveniently collapsed and stored within'a minimum or" space when not in use.
A. further object of the invention is to provide an orchard ladder which is efiicient;
of highly simplified construction and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the in-' vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.
Figure 1 is a perspective of an orchard ladder embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same collapsed;
Fig. 3 is a detail. longitudinal section through the same;
Fig. 4 is a detail transverse section through the same.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates the base of the ladder which includes longitudinally extending horizontally arranged bars 6. As illustrated in Fig. 2 the bars 6 diverge outwardly slightly for extending over a maximum area and providmg a stable base. The forward end portions of the bars 6 are vertically pivoted to a ing the bars 6 in adjusted positions. hen
it is desired to collapse the device, the wing nuts 12 are loosened to permit the free end portions of the bars 6 to be drawn inwardly whereby the base is caused to occupy a minimum of space when not in use.
A ladder generally designated by the numeral 18 includes a pair of standards 14: provided with metallic attaching feet 17 having their free end portions extended beyond the standards and bent as indicated at 18 for engaging spaced U-shaped staples or attach ing devices 19 anchored to the forward connecting member 7. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the rear sides of the standards 14: are provided with inclined notches 20 adapted to receive the endportionsor" a cross bar 21 carried by a brace 22. The brace 22 includes standards 23 horizontally hinged to the in termediate connecting member 9 as indicated For adjusting the ladder to various elevations, the cross arm 21 is engaged with the proper notches 20 in the rear side of the ladder.
Auxiliary supporting arms 25 each have one of their end portions vertically hinged to the outer sides of the bars 6 as indicated at 26. The auxiliary supporting bars 25 are especially adapted for use when it is desired to use the orchard ladder on a hillside or on an incline for providing an additional bearing surface for the device. The 'free end portions of the arms 25 are provided with hooks 27 adapted to engage eyes 28 carried by the bars 6. The hooks 27 are engaged with the eyes 28 when it is desired to collapse the device.
At this point it will be noted that the ladder is capable of being used independently of the base and when so used the attaching feet 17 which extend beyond the lower end of the ladder serve to anchor the ladder in a set position. In assembling the the invention to the base. be noted that the attaching devices 18 are inserted through the rea sides of tile les 19 and are thereby prevented from acciden' displacement or arranging the upper end desired elevation the brace is properly posi" tion to the ladder.
When it is desir d to trold the lac brace 22 is swung to a horizin 3a allel relation to the and der is d tached and is positioned as illustrated in Fig. 2. loosened to permit the bars 6 to be drawn inwardly as" illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 for causing the base to occupy but small amount of space.
it is to be understood that the form of herein shown and described is to be taken as e.- preferrcd enibodinien the same and that such ll'llllO-l c c v be made as will remain Within the spirit of the invention and the scope 's claimed.
Having thus described t 1e invention, what is claimed as new is: r
1. An orchard ladder conn. ising a pair of bars, a transversely ez-rtendinp' member pivotally connectii the bars, .rerrnceiate connecting member adjust-z: ected to the intermediate portions of tie bar ladder connected to said first nzzmed corcloned with rela The Wing nuts 12 are new" hingeo to intermediate connecting member and engaging said ladder.
2. An orchard ladder including a pair 01" longitudinally extending bars, a transversely exend'ng bar pivotally connected to the forward one portions or said longitudinall extending bars, an intermediate connecting bar extending tra sversely of said longitudinally extendng .i v and having eh gated slots, bolts carried by said longituinally GiiGIlQllIig bars and'extending throng elongated slots fastening al-JVlC-QS inou on said bolts and a ladder "fed on said named connecting bar.
