Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June '7, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL J. TURNER, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk Vehicle-Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vehicle wheels, and especially of wheels for automobiles of the steel disk type.
The principal object is to provide a wheel of extremely Simple construction, and at the same time producing a wheel that is strong, durable and low in manufacturing costs.
Another object is to provide a disk wheel using the ordinary artillery wheel hub with one flange eliminated.
A still further object is to provide a disk wheel with the front disk without a central opening and fitting over the outer hub end at a tension.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an edge view of the wheel partly in section.
Fig. 2 is front view of the wheel.
Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view showing a boss on the outer disk.
It will be seen by referring to Fig. 1 that I have provided an ordinary hub 1 with the inner flange 2. :Fastened t0 the flange 2 by rivets 3 or any other desirable means is the rear disk 4. It will be seen that this disk 4 is fastened on the inner surface of the flange 2, and that an inturned portion of the disk 4 forms a collar 5 fitting securely around the hub 1. This disk 4 is provided with a felly band seat 6 and an outwardly curved tire retaining flange 7.
By referring to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be seen that the front disk 8 is without a central opening and presses securely against the outer end 9 of the hub 1. This front disk 8 is provided with a felly band seat 10 and an outwardly curved tire retaining flange l1. I
In assembling the parts of this improved disk wheel, the disk 4 is slipped over the end 9 of the hub 1 and securely fastened to the flange 2. This disk 4 is made with a very slight concave inner portion or part within the rim. The felly band 12 is now placed in the felly seat 6 and the front disk 8 is then placed in position andthe bolts 13, which pass through the disks 4 and 8 respectively, are tightened. As this tightening process is progressing the central por tion of the disk 8 is drawn tight against the hub end 9 due to the very slight concave portion of the disk 4.
It will be seen by referring to Fig. 1 that the felly band 12 is forced against the felly seats 7 and 10, thereby eliminating the pos sibility of an imperfect contact. When these bolts 18 are properly tightened the entire wheel assembly becomes securely fixed, with the disks 4 and 8 at a tension. thereby securing strength and eliminating the chance for rattle found in other types of wheels.
While I have not shown the opening for a valve stem, I prefer to use an ordinary angle stem passing through an opening at any convenient point in the inturned portion 14 of the disk 8.
By using a relatively light felly band 12 the heat produced in the tire will be rapidly carried away through said felly band 12.
It is understood, that if desired, the central portion of the disk 8 may be provided with a boss 14 sothat the end 9 of the hub 1 may be seated within the space formed by said boss.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a hub, an inner flange on said hub, a rear disk secured to said flange, a collar formed on said disk and fitting around said hub, a front disk without a central opening, a boss centrally located on said front disk, said boss wedging sei curely over the outer end of said hub, bolts passing through disks, substantially as described for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, two disks, an inner disk provided with a central opening, an inturned collar passing over a hub and secured to a flange, an outer disk, a boss centrally located in said disk,
