IMPROVEMENT IN OILING MILLSTONE-SPINDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,074, dated April 22, 1873; application filed March 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. GHUBB, of Decatur, in the county of Adams and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oiling Millstone-Spindle, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a detail vertical section of the curb or hoop and lower or stationary stone of a run of burrs with which my improvement has been connected, taken through the line as as, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, part of the hoop or curb being broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken through the line y 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the wire for cleaning out the oilin g-tube.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for oiling millstone-spindles, by the use of which the spindle may be kept properly oiled, and which shall be convenient in use. The invention consists in the tube embedded in a channel in the leading furrow of the stationary stone, and extending from the heel or skirt to the bosom of said stone; in the tube provided with an oil-cup, in combination with the hoop or curb, the tube embedded in the stationary stone, and the spindle, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the lower or stationary stone of a run of burrs. B represents the hoop or curb which incases the upper stone or runner, and G is the spindle. In the leading furrow of the stone A is formed a channel lead ing from the heel or skirt to the bosom. This channel must be sufficiently deep to receive a tube, D, and allow it to be covered with some suitable cement. E is a tube, which passes through the hoop or curb B, and through the tube D, and is made of such a length as to reach to or nearly to the spindle G. The part of the tube E that passes through the hoop or curb B is made a little larger and stronger than the rest of said tube, to guard against its being injured by the tremble or movement of the said hoop or curb B. Upon the outer part of the tube E is formed a cup, F, to receive the oil or other lubricating material, and which is provided with a cap or cover. The outer end of the tube E is provided with a cap, cork, or other stopper, to enable a wire, G, to be inserted to clear out the tube E, to avoid the too frequent removal of the tube E, and to be sure that it has not been injured by the passage of a nail or other hard substance through the burrs.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The tube D, embedded in a channel in the leading furrow of the stationary stone A, and extending from the heel or skirt to the bosom of said stone, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The tube E, provided with an oil-cup, F, in combination with the hoop or curb B, the tube D embedded in the stationary stone, A, and the spindle G, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN J. GHUBB.
