To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NILS J. A. VVAHL- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trolley Devices, of whi h the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for trolley conductors and particularly to approaches for frogs, crossings and similar conductor attachments.
One object of my invention is a device of the above indicated character that shall be simple and durable in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object of my invention is to provide an approach for a trolley-conductor device that, with its cotiperating members, shall comprise a relatively small number oi parts and be readily mounted in operative position on a conductor by the use of a simple tool, such as a hammer.
In practising my invention, I provide a removable extension member, for a frog or other trolley-conductor device, to take up the shocks and wear incident to the passage of trolley contact members and a holding member rigidly secured thereto that may be readily moved to and from its holding position to permit mounting or" the conductor. The holding member is provided with a slot through which a headed projection on a wedge member may be inserted and by a 90 turn, with respect thereto, be placed in operative position and revented from withdrawal through the s 0t.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing, is a top plan view of a portion of a trolley frog embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side view, partially in elevation and partially in section, of the device shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 8 is a view, taken along the line III III of Fig. 2.
A frog 1, for the reception of a trolley conductor 2, only one approach end 3 of which is shown, comprises a channel or body portion 4:, of substantially U-section, in which the conductor is disposed and to which the latter may be attached in any suitable manner. An extension member 5, preferably of malleable material, projecting from the end 3, has an inverted channel porto provide tion 6 for embracing the conductor 2, a plain end face 7 that engages the end 8 and a centrally projecting portion 8 disposed in the channel 4 above the conductor 2. Oppositely and outwardly projecting lugs or flanges 9 on the upper edge of the channel portion t at the end 3 support a relativelv fiat holding member 10 that spans the chalinel oi the body member of the frog 1 and is provided with a longitudinal slot 11 parallel to the channel. End portions 12 of themember 10 closely embrace the flanges 9 and are rigidly secured with respect thereto by being pressed or clamped thereon. A relatively flat wedge member 13 is pro vided, on one face, with a projection 1 of rectangular cross section and having a head 15, the lateral thickness of which is greater than the width of the slot 11.
When assembling the device, the member 13 1s turned at an angle of 90, from the position shown in the drawings, with respect to the member 10, and the projection 14c is passed through the slot 11 in the member 10, after w ich the member 13 is again turned 90 to its operative position, shown in the drawings, where it is held against disengagement from the member 10 by the head 15. After this operation, the member 10 is attached to the frog has described above.
During the operation of attaching the member 5 to the frog 1, the portion 8 is inserted in the end of the channel 1-, between the conductor 2 and the wedge member after which, the latter is driven toward the frog 1 to rigidly clamp the portion 8 against the conductor 2.
The arrangement permits the members 1, 10 and 13 to be transported as a unit, thereby reducing the number of loose parts and greatly facilitating the renewal of the member 5.
While I have shown and described a particular form of my invention, changes may be effected therein without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A trolley-conductor device comprising a body member of channel shape for the reception of the conductor and having outwardly-projecting flanges at its edges, a
transverse member rigidly secured in a position spanning one end of the channel member and having its ends extending around said flanges, said transverse member having a slot parallel to the channel, a wedge member disposed in the channel and having a headed projection adapted for insertion through said slot and then to be turned through an L ngle of substantially ninety degrees to lock it against withdrawal, and an slotted member for interlocking engagement I therewlth, and an approach member for engagement with said body member and having a portion between said wedge member and the conductor. 7
3. A trolley-conductor device comprising a body member for the reception of the conductor, a member disposed adjacent to the end of said body member and having a slot, a wedge member disposed between said members and havlng a portion formed to have releasable interlocking relation to the slotted member in said slot, and an approach member held in position by said wedge member and the conductor.
4. A trolley-conductor device comprising a body member for engagement with the conductor, a holding member engaging said body member, a wedge member disposed between said members, means for interlocking said holding member and said wedge member together, and an approach member having a portion disposed between said wedge member and the conductor.
5. A trolley-conductor device comprising a body member for engagement with the conductor, a holding member releasably secured to said body member, a longitudinally-slidable wedge member engaging said holding member and an approach member held in position by said wedge member.
6. A trolley-conductor device comprising a body member having an end portion of substantially channel shape for the reception of a conductor, a wedge-holding member disposed over said end portion and a longitudinally slidable wedge adapted to be driven between the wedge-holding member and the conductor to clamp the latter in position. 7 v

A trolley-conductor device comprising abody member having an end portion of substantially channel shape for the reception of a conductor, a wedgerholding member disposed over said end portion and having a sloping wedge-engaging surface, and a wedge adapted to be driven between the wedge-holding member-and the conductor to clamp the latter in position.
8. A trolley-conductor device comprising a body structure having an end portion of substantially channel shape for the reception of a conductor, a wedge-holding member disposed over said end portion, a renewable approach memberhaving a portion disposed in said end portion, one of said members having a sloping wedge-engaging surface,
and a wedge adapted to be driven between the wedge-holding member and the approach member to clamp the latter and the conductor in position. 7
